This manga owes part of my soul. It is so refreshing to see a calm, slice of life manga that doesn't have oversized boobs, harem, or skinny, barbie eyed heroines (did anyone notice that little muffin top stomach of hers?! Thumbs up to mangaka!). Some people complained that the heroine is too meek, or mellow, etc but really, take the setting into context. Certain cultures were geared that way, and some still are. Women were to take care of the household, listen to the husband, etc. As much as I uphold gender equality, not every lady needs to be a raging feminist to be happy. I'm glad this manga portrayed that 🙂

Absolutely Beautiful

Without a doubt, this manga has some of the most consistently beautiful artwork I've seen. Every single frame is equally detailed and stunning. The story is also amazing in that it's not hackneyed and overly romanticized. In fact, it's believable. It is also laced with just the right amount of light-hearted moments that neither feel trite nor over the top. My only wish is that I would have started reading this series later, so that I wouldn't have to wait for every chapter. This is the kind of story that makes you want to keep reading.

Really, I don't understand AT ALL what the previous review is talking about. THIS IS ABOUT HISTORY OF COURSE THERE WILL BE SAD PARTS. It's cute and there's a cheerfulness to the relationships between families but tragedy is a part of history as much as comedy is. How is that disturbing? I find the kind of history classes they must have taken disturbing if this is what they pull from the manga.

This story is slice of life, it's multiple stories of people woven with their daily thoughts and moments, and it's these moments, these attention to detail (as can be seen through the artwork) that makes this manga so brilliant. Often in historical manga or books they leave out all the fine details and moment to moment lives of regular people in that period, while Otoyomegatari focuses on the lives of normal, everyday people and taking these little details to make them unique and likable. You see at once the differences and similarities between yourself and them through this.

I think it's easy to have this lense and judgement in our modern day society and often history is filtered through that. The things we find uncomfortable were normal, everyday things for the people who lived before us-and it's easy to get caught up in the age gap and other such things we deem "evil" and unacceptable. However, it's important to remember that these things happened, frequently, and if we put ourselves in their shoes, really, and let go of all biases you start to see the amazing stories and people this manga is about. I would say this is very educational, especially from an anthropological as well as historical standpoint. You have to let go of any biases you have to understand that these are CULTURAL and TIME PERIOD differences, normal in any Anthropology or History class. At this point you can probably tell I'm mostly speaking to the comment below me, but I feel it's important to clarify the difference between being offended based on personal biases and disliking something simply because it is not good quality. THIS is an amazing manga, it's quite a lovely experience.

this manga is not disturbing in anyway at all. and this is coming from someone from the middle east.
i have know idea what (s)he is talking about.

of course there was slavery, forced marriages, wars and all the other sad stuff in the middle east (like any other part of the world) but if people believe that they all had happy endings like in this manga then it's their own fault and stupidity. no war has ever had a happy ending for anyone, no slave wanted to serve his/her master, and no woman wanted to marry anyone against her own will. if anyone thinks other than that then it's their own problem. but this manga is a seinen/shoujo, what do you expect?! people to die, rape, and fight? gosh grow up teens are going to be reading this.

and wth is disturbing about happy endings?!

it was a very nice manga, and quite educational actually. as a persian i had no idea about the sisterhood thing but then i read it in this manga and have been bugging my friends to do it with me since (they probably wont, the cold blooded monsters).

the details, god the details. they were beautiful. never had i seen a manga with such gorgeous art - seeing all the stuff i see almost everyday in shops drawn so beautifully in a 'japanese manga' made me appreciate it so much XD

fun fact : anis means someone who is very close and dear to you , shirin means sweet. the mangaka actually studied middle east names for this manga and i could not express how happy i was when i read it ^^

anyway, a very nice read. 10/10 (obviously)

that's why I love Seinens. the jokes, even though you usually don't burst out in laughter like in gag mangas, make you harbor a big wide grin, you laugh with your heart and you notice quite happily how well-made the story is told. I love this series, I'm glad I bought the first volume to try it out =)

Culturally Diversed

It's very rare to find a refreshing manga like this. The author not only gave us (the readers) a solid story and intricate artwork. It was able to educate readers about a culture. The author was very successful in educating the readers the lifestyle and customs of people that time. Not only that, she was able to capture the richness of the culture. Through her drawings, she was able to give justice in presenting how elaborate and deep the culture. It fascinates me that the author was able to weave the story and customs/practices of the people back then. The author proves that manga isn't only for story and art, it's how you educate the readers as well.

I dunno what made me bump into this series but I'm glad it did. The artwork as many others have said is simply gorgeous, the details on the womens' intricate clothing and the people's faces. Amira has some of the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen in a manga character. Though they're not real you can somehow see the soul behind them. The whole family that Karluk and Amira are part of are so endearing. The romance between the two main characters is pure and adorable. And as for Mr Smith and the other girl I really do hope they get together in the end. Maybe live as extended family of Karluk's tribe.

A truly wonderful experience to read this manga and I do hope more will come.

This manga seriously makes me want to travel all over. Oh well: as for a little review.
This one starts a little slow I found. Like so many times, if you stick with it it becomes wonderful (I was 100% sold by volume 4.. so give it some time). I love Mori Kaoru's work since reading Emma, but this is nothing like it at first glance. As usual for the mangaka everything is drawn superbly well, and the setting and plot draw you into the another world.

The summary coupled with a historical tag makes may put people off (and pull people in all the same, mind you); but all together this is a blissful seinen read. Highly recommended.

This one sure is amazing. I looked against starting this one... but it's actually breathtaking. The art is so well-done, some pages haven't got a single word, yet your mind tells the whole story just by looking at them. I really like how the culture is explained, the way everyday life in that tribe is shown. I didn't see too much romance... but I couldn't care less to be honest. This is a must read.

as expected from the mangaka of Emma. this new story looks very promising. a bit of realism tied to the manga is always nice. her art is meticulously detailed, making her work very unique and beautiful to look at. The pace is slow, which is fine but there is a draw back, since her chapters are released at a very slow pace. i wish she would work faster ^^. The story is engrossing. Just FYI, her works take a bit to draw you in but it is definitely worth reading
