Description

Following their parents' deaths, Masaya and his younger brother Ryou are brought to the Takatou Estate. They are forced to live in the servants' quarters, where Ryou spends his childhood as the companion and lover of the Takatou family heir, Akahito. He stumbles upon a secret which changes his life forever. While Masaya's life is now at stake, Ryou's status changes from that of Akihito's lover to his slave. Friendship and companionship give way to brutality and violence. It's up to Ryou to rescue both his brother and himself from the family he once trusted.

A little too flat and cliche

I've gotten used to Minami Haruka's art style which I generally would like more if it wasn't coupled with the yaoi genre (plus many of her ukes look exactly alike which irritates me as an artist... if you're going to create a character, you may as well make them unique). But as for story, I felt this fell short of what I'd hoped for, ending up in all sorts of cliches I generally dislike.

Akihito became a figure similar to his father and in earlier chapters, it had seemed like Ryou had realized that and couldn't forgive him (which could lead to some major character development for Akihito before Ryou would be able to forgive him). But, as one usually finds in these types of stories, in the end it was Ryou who "realized his mistake" and noticed that it was just Akihito's way of loving him - so that made it okay. Of course, Akihito is never shown to have truly been in the wrong and doesn't learn from his mistakes. I can't even remember if he even apologizes properly for raping Ryou, but if it was there, it was much too quick and easy an apology for doing something so horrific.

As for Ryou's brother, he gets hardly any kind of resolve (I would have liked to see Ryou interact at least once with him after he discovers his brother sleeping with the head of the household, but there is only a one-sided letter sent from Ryou. Considering the importance of Ryou's older brother to the plot, especially in the beginning (--! NOTE: Ryou's only two close people in the beginning are Akihito and his brother--!), it would have felt like a more complete story if he had kept his importance to the end, and not just with the odd mention). Plus, admittedly, I was expecting something to happen between Saiga and Ryou's brother which obviously didn't pan out.

As a final note, it definitely irritated me that there were so many passive abusers in this story who never really took full responsibility for their actions - or inaction - the two main culprits of this story being Akihito and Saiga who stood by for years without doing anything to try and stop the abuse they knew was going on. Ultimately, although they both are guilty of helping the abuse by looking the other way, neither of the two victims hold it against them and they all stay very close, Saiga and Akihito never fully accepting responsibility in the fact that they are just as guilty of the abuse of Ryou's older brother as is Akihito's father (there is a reason people can be sent to jail for not doing anything to help someone in certain situations as if they were the ones hurting the victim with their own hands).

Overall, the first two chapters seemed very promising, but unfortunately Minami-sensei didn't follow-through with the plot as well as I'd hoped. I initially read this one because someone mentioned it on another one of her works as a 'longer story which goes more in-depth' so I wanted to see Minami-sensei's skills at her best. Perhaps I'll keep on looking but maybe I should just resign to the idea that her stories are good as shallow (not necessarily used as a negative term here) short stories and leave the deeper stories to yaoi mangaka like Yoneda Kou or Miyamoto Kano.

For those just reading this:
We have to give her props for trying....that's as much as I can say...i like reading her stuff for the mindless entertainment....that's all there is to it....in this story there were some semblance of a plot, but it was weak and like all her couples, you had the overly weak uke and the possesive-seems-like- he-knows-everything seme....actually her uke in this one bothered me more than the rest...maybe cus the story was trying to be more than just mindless sex, but he just seemed way to docile....after all the crap the seme made him go through, I at least expected him to be a little angry and maybe just maybe made the other one beg a little more, I mean so he was in love w/ him before things went sour, so you just don't stop loving someone, I get that, but to just be like

"ok, you treated me like a freaking thing over some misunderstanding, but I need you, my body feels empty w/o you and I still love you so don't ever leave me"... yeah, not buying it...oh and my fave part, when the dad and the dude are talking and the dad's like ! "Ima give him away as a present to a business associate" the uke was listening and thinking "I only want to be raped by so-and-so" Uh? Yeah ,maybe he deserved what he got if he was gonna be that stupid about it.....
All in all, if you want pretty characters having sex, this is a good series, if you want some actual character development, look elsewhere....another story with a similar plot, but a much stronger one would be in my opinion Sakura Gari by Yuu Watase.....

So this story is a 2, cus I kinda liked the brother, he seemed a bit more fleshed out than the main character and he hardly came out.....
Art is awesome, so an 8
But then again, she's a good smutty artist w//o much plot to her stories....

Pretty good

It's better the second time you read it, because you start to pick up more of the bits and details that make up the WHOLE story rather than going O.O at all the sex scenes. And it just gets better every time you read it! The first time, I didn't like it very much, because I did think it had a "rape you till you love me" meaning. However, the story implies that their "love" had already existed prior to the violence - btw, I'm giving this an 8 rather than anything higher, because there are flaws everywhere, especially with how cruelly Akihito treats Ryou. Which is in no way justifiable. Yes, he's lashing out because he's afraid that Ryou would leave him... but is that how you treat someone? Seriously.
All in all, Saihate is SO different from all of Minami sensei's other works, because underneath all that cute art is a pretty dark storyline. It's angsty. Not really for readers who prefer a lighter read.

This manga was really a waste of time. Seriously. Before I start explaning why, I'll give my rating for the art: a 4.5/10. The characters are cute and all, but everyone (even the seme...) look too girlish. And the proportions are off.

Okay. So. This manga had a very weak excuse for a plot, and was just a ton of smex, and porn lines. (example: "Oh! You're c*ck feels so hot!! More!! More!!!). And I just don't like the whole rape thing. If Akahito really loved Ryou, then why the hell did he keep continue to rape and verbally abuse him?! And it seemed to me that Akahito only wanted Ryou's body, and nothing more. Also, I don't see how the hell Ryou can like Akahito even after he

(don't know if this is really spoiler or not, but) went on and on about how he erased all his happy memories with Akahito. It annoys me. I mean, I can take rape, but Akahito was way too cruel to Ryou. It wasn't love at all. Just cruelty. ! Like how Akahito's father treated Ryou's older brother. . And the ending (especially the epilogue!) just didn't make any sense to me, mainly because it felt rushed. So, I give this a 3/10. What kept it from completely dropping to a zero was that 1. I like the older brother and Saiga together (though Saiga felt a bit useless), and 2. there was hot sex.

All in all, Akahito is more of a monster than a human, since his logic is that he should rape the person he loves, and be cruel to him in every way (physically, emotionally, mentally, etc.) Ryou is either a complete fool, an extreme masochist, or just an alien (as in from outerspace, not from a foreign country), since he still loves Akahito. No offense, but Minami Haruka should just stick with PWP. It was good, I guess, for her to attempt at trying to make a manga with plot, though. A failed attempt, but at least she tried.

My overall rating is: 3.7/10

One of my favourites by Minami Haruka! Both seme and uke were bishies <3 There's so much depth, and even in the characters aswell, only bad thing is that I think the ending was rushed, but in all, I really loved this manga!

To me, this is the best of all Minami-sensei's works. Usually, they don't have a plot and are just worth reading for hot sex and cute stuff (that's why most people keep on reading), but this one here really has a plot. Yes, it is a commonly used one and a little predictable, but I actually loved it. Someone once told me that all the plots nowadays have been used, and what makes a manga good is the way it's delivered better than the others. Well, guess what? This one is the best manga with this theme, which I love.

While I was reading it, I could totally feel the characters' emotions and cried throughout the whole story. It's angst throughoutly!

The art is amazing , like Minami-sensei's always is. The characters are freaking hot and they have such intense expressions they almost look real.

But by far, what made me love this manga are the characters.
I simply adore Akahito. Really, he's exactly the kind of seme that gets me into everything the author presents us. I love sadistic semes that are only doing it because they can't control their love. I enjoy his "clumsy way of showing affection".
As for Ryou, he's very cute, and I seem to get carried on by his feelings as well...so I guess that's what made the story so good for me.

I also like to think that Masaya got together with Saiga, for some reason. They just fit so well!

In my opinion, this is a MUST.

This was one of my top fave from Haruka sensei! It was drama filled, Angsty, and sooo lovely. I loved Ryou and Akahito. It was very painful to read. It nearly brought me to tears. The art was so lovely. I was very happy with the ending. Over all a lovely series.

This one really surprised me, and in a good way! There is very seldom an actual plot in Minami-sensei's works. Usually they are just hot and cute smut ^//^ But this time there was a real plot and drama too! I really enjoyed reading this. It was nice change compared to Minami-sensei's usual works ^__^

This is soooo shallow and cliché, the caricatural characterization (if you can even call it that) and stupid "plot" are simply appalling.
It doesn't even raise the bar with good art (the cover's misleadingly pretty in that aspect) or nice smex.

Such a waste of time.

And people, don't be uncultivated to the point of silliness! No, neither slavery nor sex slavery are common things in Japan rolls eyes
