Something that sticks out

I started reading this series over a decade ago as a teen and finished it now as an adult. It would probably be strange for the experiences to be different but perhaps more importantly unlike many series I abandoned I went back to finish it. Part of that was because what scenes I could remember would vividly stick out to me years later and part of it was randomly encountering people talking about for whom it evoked the same feelings.

What stuck out to me coming back was how different the characters seemed from what I remembered. People who frustrated and scared me seemed suddenly transparent, relatable and pitiable in turn. Still they were interesting, perhaps more so than what they seemed originally.

Another reason the series is odd is despite starting its life as a pretty generic idea suggested by the editor "two girls and a guy!" something that has become a route repetition in manga circles but that the author approached the as a complete outsider. Someone who was lacking in preconceptions that neither sought to confirm nor refute any ideas the audience might have simply because they hadn't yet gotten inured to the topic. What arises is a sort of easygoing and sincere glimpse into the awkward gaps in the "script" of adult dating. A world of commitment issues, work exhaustion, awkward exes and the distant inconsequential judgment of others. People with conflicting wants dealing with people with conflicting wants and no longer imprisoned in a cage of expectations called high school romance.

Really it's worth a shot simply as something different.

The whole thing has a rather funny and great ending as well which I bring up only because after finishing it and coming back to my old haunt to reflect I found the most recent review to be lamenting the opposite from someone who apparently didn't finish the thing. Which you totally should if you've been sitting on it!

A Melancholy Story with Well Written Characters

Honeymoon Salad is a brooding romance story about the main character's relationship with two troubled women. It contains a sobering account of codependency, domestic violence, estrangement, and the depression that comes from contemporary urban adult life, into which the main characters' loves and joys are mixed. Despite some comic scenes with the main character early in the series, as well as the sex scenes, this is not a 'fun' story to read. The pessimism and themes of loss get more prevalent as the story goes on before culminating in a bizarre and dark ending.

Overall, I can't help but compare this story unfavorably to Nozoki Ana. Both are frank and at times sordid accounts of young adults' personal lives, but Honeymoon Salad doesn't bring the same range of emotions and experiences, while taking itself much more seriously. This failing affects it's eroticism as well, with many of its sex scenes being blatantly depressing. And while having a tiny cast is not in itself a bad thing, it ends up making it impossible to vary the tension of the story, which is something Nozoki Ana does very well. Oppressive tones work best when they're contrasted with things like joy, but the characters seem to turn to squabbling or depression when they should be happy.

Ultimately, I feel let down by this story's failure to fully explore it's themes. I actually expected the story to eventually be about how a polyamorous relationship could work - the idea is even brought up by a side character early in the story.

The problem is that this storyline ends when Youko refuses to join Ichika in bed during the vacation arc .

The fact that their relationship ultimately pushes the characters apart instead of together is what makes the ending so unsatisfying. The story could have built up emotional tension, and then find solace when the characters realize that they can't function without one another. There is a degree of payoff, as the characters do reconcile with their estranged families, and Ichika does overcome her codependency and set out on her own. But the ending left me hating the main characters and feeling like much of the story was pointless. The story could have really used an epilogue arc after the massive twist in the very last chapter. This could have given the author the chance to at least reconcile the main characters with one another.

For a dark and sobering story about romance and adult life, I give this story a 6, with points taken off for failing to contrast tones and for a sudden and unfulfilling ending.

It was an entertaining read! I liked the relationship the characters all had with each other, especially how the two girls got along. It wasn't really cliche either so I didn't know what to expect most of the time. There were certain parts where it made sense to me, in particular the break up, I was kind of thinking that she was being a bitch but then I thought about it and realised it was being a hyprocrite 😛 However there were also bits that I found really really confusing. I didn't really understand the ending, like what did those things mean? And sometimes I didn't understand their reasonings but then again I guess that's how it is in real life. Also, what happened to the Shachou? But if the ending is how I interpreted it then I liked it, because they are different types of love and some like family love you can give to more then one person, even though we call them different types when it comes down to it, is it not still love? I liked the refreshing originality in this manga.

Great Manga

Its been awhile since last I read interesting drama manga, the idea simple make 1 guy and 2 women live together and see how its play out. While the idea is simple the character and the story is not, the author manage to explain deep into character personality while still being vague, it is really hard to predict the character but at the same time I can relate to it, and unlike other drama manga, this one able to make the story interesting without adding external factor like adding new extra character.

Honey salad is well written manga, able to go outside mainstream drama manga without being strange or boring, it is definitely worth reading if you bored by other drama manga.

..is the threesome. hella fun manga, best ending ever, if only we could apply this to Ichigo 100%

i really love Youko's character,

her loyalty to minori is a win win attitude for a manga like this. Not to mention she held it back for years, that mustve been very very nice after they finally did it. i dont really understand their breakup during high school, i hope the Baby Leaf manga will uncover more of their past.

the first point i like about this manga is the art. i really like the way the eyes are drawn somehow, and the expressions of the characters. the lines are also clear and the whole of it is straightforward. the art is really a big plus for me.

i also like all the characters. i usually hate inconsiderate people like youko, but the author manage to pull it off making her look 'cute'. the 'meek' girl is also usually annoying, but here she is very like-able and serene. the moody and angsty main character is also not my usual cup of tea, but here in this manga he just work. and the combination of the characters also work, and you will not feel it is unbelievable for such different people able to be friends and friends-with-benefits.

the plot progression is logical and the ending is one of the best ending out there. i appreciate that no one will be left hanging. i always prefer the tenchi solution in my harems.

and the best part of this manga to me is the musings of the characters, their philosophical take on the situation, and their analysis of their emotions. it make their whole character become more real and developed and more like-able.

a great read.

I really love this manga.
You have to read the short prequel to understand stuff. Not about Youko and Minori. There are quite a few flashbacks to their past. Last chapter of Baby Leaf is about Ichika.
I like the way it ended. I wouldn't be 100% happy any other way.
This is a manga about three "broken" people. Ichika is dependent but can't handle fully committed relationship. Basically a pathological lover on the side. Youko is spontaneous and irrational one love she broke but couldn't let go. Minori was broken by Youko, but he is the most sane one out of the three. He tries to be normal.

If Youko left it would have been really sad, because the chemistry between Youko and both Minori and Ichika was great. And to give up on YoukoXMinori would be really bad. IchikaXMinori wouldn't work without Youko.
If you throw away Ichika she would be alone and broken. Really sad.

I loved the last volume with relationship between Youko and Minori actually moving somewhere.
And why fix what isn't actually broken? They have their own small world, they are happy, Why "fix"it?
Can you imagine Ichika happy as an independent woman? She is pathological but happy in this weird relationship.
Unhappy but normal or happy but broken?
I didn't like Ichika because she was in the way of Minori and Youko and yet she pushed them together. I doubt it would have worked out without her.
And to abandon her to the life of unhappiness? I wouldn't be able to forgive it.

Pretty Good

I'm not sure if it's just me but I never feel like i got sucked into it. I didn't find the main character very likable but thats probably because I am a very positive person and reading a story in which the main character is always sad and angry I just can't connect. It's a very gloomy, dark story. But don't get me wrong I was able to follow it and read it through to the end with out getting bored. I just feel as though my expectations were a little different after just finishing a comedy before reading this one. All in all it's a good above average manga. I wouldn't put it at the top of my recommendations but I wouldn't stay away from it either. In the end it really is the type of reader you are.

The manga started off overwhelmingly great, I really liked the characters, I liked the fact that they were all quite broken in their own way. But seriously, what the hell. Lots of comments below say you need to be "mature" to fully enjoy this manga; but I honestly found how it all panned out outright ridiculous. If you really think this is the perfect ending to their situation, I'd say you're wrong.

Okay, they got so dependent on each other that they were a bit of a "package deal", but Ichika should have gotten "fixed" and independent. I found the ending extremely lousy, the last volume extremely frustrating. Oh well, maybe I didn't "understand" everything well enough.

Mostly enjoyable

I've been following this for years and just finally finished and I gotta say, I'm disappointed with the ending.

There's an interview where the manga-ka explains where the story came from and it shows at the end. Something about the editor recommending doing a story about a threesome or some such. So disappointing to hear because that's not what you get out of this story throughout most of it. The ending is also rather up in the air. It didn't come off as realistic, just as the writer not bothering.

Still, it's an enjoyable ride, especially in the beginning. It's a bit stretched out, especially with such a disappointing end. But if you think the characters will truely confront themselves with the reality and hard choices that they have to make than just start crying and or laughing now.

There's a part of this story I still remember. Where the characters discuss why they broke up, and I've always liked that because who hasn't perceived a slight just because your friend(or whatever) was busy(or some other reason), and I could relate to when the girl sees her ex having more friends or seemingly not needing her as much. There's a few points like that.

This just makes the ending that much less satisfying. It's so hard when something doesn't end well. It goes back it points a dark cloud over the experience, especially when you're working off your recollections. Still, before that happens, it's good.
