I'm looking for a really good historical manga, specifically one centered on Eastern history instead of Western. I would love it if someone would recommend a manga concerning the Shogunate or a certain time period in Japanese history. It doesn't have to be shoujo, or action, or anything like that, I just want a really good Historical manga. Thanks!

Samurai X is based in the begining meji era, its acurate history with slight changes for plot/characters

theres also an adachi manga (forgot the name) based in edo period it involves some shogonate but its more gag manga with a little bit of plot than anything

Getsumei Seiki (set during Bakumatsu era, tell of Shinsengumi and the (in)famous Hijikata Toushizou is the protagonist)
Hanzou no Mon (by Koike Kazuo and Kojima Gouseki, story of the legendary ninja Hattori Hanzou, vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu who established the Tokugawa shogunate—more fictionalised history than historical fiction, i.e. the historical detail is very accurate)
Hitokiri Ryouma (if you can read the raws)
Hyouge Mono (follows the life of Oda Nobunaga's vassal, slice of life that tells of the eccentric personality of Oda Nobunaga)
Kozure Ookami (by Koike and Kojima, about the former top rank executioner, retainer of shogun, who was framed and who continues of his quest for revenge against the Yagyuu clan, doesn't focus on historical facts but tells a story in historical setting, details are accurate but the story is fiction)
Kubikiri Asa (another one by Koike and Kojima, very accurate and detailed history focusing on the shogun's executioner and explores the why's and how's of the people and the circumstances of the people to be beheaded, includes a lot of small historical details)
Nijiiro Togarashi (complete fiction, a manga by Adachi Mitsuru, historical (or science fictional?!) setting is all that is historical, but the shogunate is a very central theme)
Oudou no Inu (another you need to know Japanese for, one of the best historical manga set in Meiji period)
Samurai Legend (Yaguu again in central role, set during the shogunate, can't remember the plot but I remember of being surprised how realistic it was, against my expectations, not much history I think but the details should be accurate, good read)
Satsuma Gishiden (very detailed history of the life of the samurai, tells things you can't see in most historical works that only detail from outside viewpoint)
Shigurui (based on novel written by Nanjou Norio, the tragedy of Kogan style sword fighting school and Fujiki Gennosuke, set in Edo period, very graphic but realistic bordering on supernatural (crossing?) manga of the struggle and fall of the strongest sword fighting school to forgotten history, historical details are accurate and the story is told in a fashion that it makes you believe it might have actually happened)
Takemitsu Zamurai (although historically accurate, there's no actual historical characters or events dwells into the traditional philosophical questions of the samurai and Japanese people in general in a very distinctive style, art by Matsumoto Taiyou)
Vagabond (based loosely on Yoshikawa Eiji's novel Musashi, account of perhaps the most famous samurai, Miyamoto Musashi)

So do you want a realistic representation? A lot of the "historical" mangas concerning the shogun-era that I've read hold well-known figures, but in a fantastical setting. A lot of them are gag mangas too.

Basilisk for example, names specific people but of course is a fictional tale
Himegami has famous people but in a fantasized setting

So on and so forth

Kaze Hikaru was very historical. It's set mainly around fighting for the shogunate and has a lot of historical facts. It's a shoujo about a girl joining a samurai group, falling in love and hiding her identity. It's pretty funny and was a fun read, but to be honest for me, the plot development and characters fall flat near the end. I highly recommend trying out the first volume or two though!

Edit: And if you're into anime, I recommend Samurai Champloo. So much originality and very well-thought out story with adventures along the way and characters you can feel for... Though it's not to everyone's tastes, it's got some weird parts! (coughbaseballepisodecough) It's got samurai and a good setting to fit your criteria! Except it's not manga. But really, check it out. There's a manga too, but it's not complete, I believe, and you're missing out on music, sound, environment, etc.
