Do you love your country?
Quote from IMustBeInsane
And it's a pet peeve of mine when friends of mine rant about how horrible America is and how much better other countries are who have never even left the state they live in. You can't judge unless you have something to judge against.
I know. =O It's funny how those of America like to go on a exotic vacation in Europe, and that those in Europe want to have an awesome vacation in America. >.< They have such naieve views. =D

I can't really say I totally love the county I live in, but I can say that I enjoy living in the country that I live in. I like most of the people (non-politic related), the diversity of culture, and other things. Then, there are the things that I don't like, but there's always something that can be done about it if people try hard on it. Living in the northeast part of the US, you really get a lot of different kinds of people compared to say, living in the mid-part of the country. If my parents didn't immigate from Taiwan, I think my viewpoint would've been different as to how I would perceive the west. (Stereotypes...sheesh. Glad I don't believe in the stereotype business.)
I have been to other places across the world such as Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Holland, France, Canada, Egypt, Japan, Mexico, and even a bit of Germany. Taiwan doesn't count as I've been there too many times. The only things I really can appreciate from Taiwan are the cheap prices for food, movies, and manga. ^_^
Anyways, as far as my world travels have gone, I think a lot of the countries are actually pretty similar to each other. Sure, they all have different cultures, government ideas, and customs. But any developed country, regardless of whether their government is corrupt or not, has a highway system, different social status, and currency at least.
I think one of the saddest countries that I've seen so far is Mexico because of a lot of poor areas in the country. Makes anyone from better living conditions feel they are fortunate. I don't know what the Mexican government does with their money over the beach resorts, but seriously... Being confronted by small children trying to sell you jewelry is not something to be happy about.
Then, there are other places across the world who are face with worse conditions. The country, I definitely don't want to grow up in, would be China. >D

I love America. I love the land, I love the people, and I especially love our national ideals. I just wish our government would live up to them a bit better.

sigh One bad president in the last 20 years isn't too bad.
One? I make it 2 bad (Reagan & Bush I), 1 mediocre (Clinton), and one atrocious to historical proportions (Bush II). Seriously, I believe we are now living under the worst American President of all time. The only other contender IMO, is Andrew Jackson, who actively participated in a policy of Genocide against Native Americans. Probably the last unambiguously good President we had was Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Good depends on one's personal beliefs. I think that TR was far and away better than FDR mainly because many of the policies implemented by FDR gave too much control to the federal government, hence the mess that we are in today. And Bush II is far better than say, Herbert Hoover, or Ulysses S. Grant or Bill Clinton.
And it wasn't just Andrew Jackson who had a policy of Genocide against Native Americans. Every president in that time period had some oppressive policy of some sort, including Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant, under whom more battles were waged against the Indian Nations than ever before.
TBH, I would take a lousy president for some 4-8 years than a dictator or lousy prime minister.
Furthermore, it is the Legislature that causes most of the problems in this country, with it's approval rating constantly being in the low twenties and the upper teens.

I think TR was great too. He's the reason we don't all live under the control of one massive corporation.
Jackson was especially bad in that he defied the Constitutional will of Congress and the Supreme Court in his campaign against Native Americans in regards to forcing the Cherokee off their land.
I love my country. Korea~!
Before I came to live here at America I was all OMFG AMERICA?!
Now, I'm all like wtf America? Not trying to be a dumbass here but. People who fantasize about America like me and start living here, I was kind of disappointed how it doesn't live up to everyone's hype. Well, maybe I'm only speaking for myself. >_>;

well, i can't say i love my country (sweden), but it's a pretty good place to live.
the state funds the healthcare and schools (my father just got a pacemaker installed, would have been impossible if we were living almost anywhere else... ). we have low crime, our most rightwing party is far left of for example the american democrats. we have few guns in the streets, little crime, much imigration and little unemployment. i read some time ago that we are the least religous country in the world, and we have a pretty diverse culture.
but there is bad things too, a lot of rain, cold, often rainy winters that are far to long. the people are introvert and often seen as booring. we also have a history of helping unjust wars. for example, we let the germans transport troops through sweden during WW2, and latley our government has given suspected terrorists to the CIA to be tortured in egypt, allthough our law says that no one can be deported to somewhere where they migt be tortured and executed. latley we have gotten a lot more private schools, and the hospitals delegate a lot of patients to private clinics.
also, last election the nationalistic party sverigedemocraterna got seats in government.
and also, our prime minister looks like a moomin-troll...
so, no there are a lot of good things in sweden, but also a lot of crappy stuff to be ashamed of, but i guess it could be worse...
*edit: just saw the film sicko, thank god I'm not an American! to actually have to pay for health care...

I didn't realize how fond I was of the US till I came back from a trip overseas. The politics not so much, but there is a fondness of it. I've thought about living someone else when I get expecially angry at some policy that passes. (like the patriot act or Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act) but I'm comfortable here and the US certainly isn't the worst place to live.
I like that there is still land available, we have great national parks, any climate you want except tundra-artic. Theres a lot of ethnic diversity. We don't rely on food imports from other countries and if we had to could be self sufficent. Now if we would stop selling highways to foreign governments/corps and get some decent green laws I'd be pretty happy. 😁 Oh, I also wish we'd stop meddling with world affairs and focus more at home.

I love my country, Hungary all the way. It's dirty, the public safety is crap (they tried to mug me thrice in a year), not so long ago extreme rightist mobs made quite a mess (one time more than 300 people got hurt), but it's still my country. I can't really put my reasons into words, but I've grown attached to this place, its people, its customs and the little everyday stories.
For example my school building. It was originally (back in the twenties) a school for Jewish students (at that time there were lot of Jewish people in Hungary, especially in Budapest, the capitol). It was closed down during WWII, but the time when the Jewish people were chased down, deported or simply shot, it harbored some hundreds of people, who would have most likely died otherwise. Later on it was used as a hospital for Soviet soldiers. In the eighties some students were asked to dig up the long jump ground and digging too deep, they found a Soviet soldier buried there.
Whenever I see the sign of gunshots on the school walls I think of such stories, and it really hits me that there were people before me here, and there will be people after me, and it's a really important feeling for me.

As an American I dont really love my country, but I guess I am thankful that Im not in a worse country.

In general, I would say I like it, but if I had the chance, I would´t mind moving to Japan for some years (maybe even for life)
Why does everyone say they want to move to Japan? ok anime and manga is made in Japan but that doesn't mean all people go around with blue hair and there's cat girls everywhere. Japan may look happy and a welcoming place to live in and visiting but living in Japan is whole other deal. When a gaijin decides to stay in Japan he/she will always be treated as an outsider, the schooling and work is also strict as hell. I'm not saying foreigners are being bullied or anything however you'll always be treated as a gaijin no matter how many years you stay in Japan and then in the end you'll realise just how lonely you are. 😐
prepare to become a robot like me (^-^) tachikoma Took the words out of my mouth. ^__^ Props to you.
I love Canada. ;D I love this country~ Of course, I hate how our Prime Minister is a wanna-be Bush. But seriously, I don't give a flying fuck about politics. So screw that. It took me years to learn our last Prime Minister's name. Well after Harper came in. 🤣 Shows how much I really care.
I do want to move to Europe maybe later in the future. ^^; Spain, England - I love those two countries. @_@
