Nagasarete airantou seems like a generic harem manga to me.
I'm actually pretty surprised no one mentioned it.
1 guy gets blown of his ship and turns up on an island without any male population (the males once had a 'males only' party on a boat and drowned) and all the girls want him. It's also impossible to get of the island because of the currents.
and hey,
do NOT mess with Suzuka >:-(

See, but then again, while that seems highly unoriginal to you purely because you are using an overall-media point of view, when you specify it to manga, there aren't that many out there with that specific situation.
In fact, I can't think of any out there where it's 1 guy and 100+ girls stranded on an island.

I think he may mean the general situation; like a guy conveniently placed in an all-girls dormitory/school/apartment building/planet. The whole 1 guy 1 million girls concept.

but it basically follows Love Hina's premise. One guy in a dorm living with girls right down to the hole in the guy's room leading to the main girl's room. What i don't like about Suzuka is how the ecchi parts were presented to the reader, as though it has no connection to the story. Take away the ecchi part and the story will go on just fine. Unlike in Love Hina where the ecchi moments are intertwined with the story seamlessly.
Its not enough to show almost naked girls at random, e.g. what's the deal with the 2 girls in Suzuka who always go to the protagonist's room just to get drunk?

Yeah, that annoyed me about Suzuka. In fact Suzuka isn't a manga that I would read a second time...it'd just be too frustrating. Love Hina I plan on reading a third time pretty soon though ^^.
Anyways, back to the original thing we're talking about, the general situation that the guy has in Nagasarete airantou is basically the general situation for half of all harems out there. Something THAT generelized isn't unoriginal, it's simply guideline.
Ugh...I guess that doesn't make much sense. What I'm trying to say is that...
You're making the argument that for example a shounen in which -> the main character is bullied, then gains enormous power, loses someone close to them, and ends up overcoming obstacles <- is generic.
However that's not generic, that's just the general guideline that most shounens use. And guess what? It's effective, and damn entertaining to read.

Pastel isn't harem.
I consider it a harem if there are 3 or more people in love with the main character.
It's been a while since I've had a runthrough of pastel... but I can only think of 2 characters who were in love with the main character...

From wiki: "Harem is a term used to describe Japanese works (such as Love Hina) wherein a single average male character is surrounded by numerous (usually three to seven, sometimes more) attractive females, most of whom are romantically interested in the main character."
Pastel is definitely an harem. There is no need that all the girl are in love with the main character, some should be in love and some should just have to be there, otherwise most of what we usually call harem wouldn't be harem (Suzuka for example). Take Shina Dark for example, there is the harem tag, but not the romance tag, because there is no signs of romance at all for now, but it's still labeled as an harem.
What I like in Trivial Pursuit style. Pick your category:

You're talking about the situation the lead placed in. the things I find generic is that the lead is extremely popular with the ladies, and the fact that he's the only male (human) on the island.

and about Suzuka... I'm not that critical, so those things didn't annoy me at all.
The only manga that really annoyed me so far was Girls Bravo...it's just too crappy

As far as the most generic one, i'll take Maburaho (or was it Mahoraba? anyway the one with the anime that had the subtitle "Heartful Days"). That was pretty generic.
It's Mahoraba, and I don't see how this could be considered a "harem" manga in any way, shape or form.
Unless you consider the fact that the main character lives in an apartment with several females (although there is another male character there as well).
However, the only female interested in him romantically is the one he is also attracted to. The other girls may consider him as a friend, big bother, etc., but there is never any sort of romantic feelings between them.
For me it's a tough call as there are a number of one's that fit the stereotypical mold (To-LOVE-Ru, Rosario + Vampire, Sekirei, Girls Saurus DX, etc.), but the two I'd have to go with are Gakuen Heaven and Momoiro Sango. Both hit all the basic "harem" plot points: single, unassuming guy living in a setting where he is constantly surrounded by gorgeous females who for some unknown reason feel incredibly attracted to him.
Note that I actually really enjoy both these series, but I'm not unaware of the fact that they are rather generic on the face of it... 😁
Girl Sayrus DX is not generic, not by a long shot.

I think shuffle and nagasarete airantou comes to mind, and honestly a lot of shounen romances fall into the generic harem set-up. Well, IMHO it doesn't really matter whether the manga is very unoriginal as long as the writer turns the generic set-up into something good, and sometimes original doesn't equate to good. I'm not saying generic harem is good though. Anyway, just my two cents. 😎
Don't only look straight, look also to the sides, usually the essential isn't in front of you, but beside you.

Huh, I was gonna make a list of generic harem romance but I realized now that I can't really think of a harem that was good. At best, they have been tolerable. Yet it remains the genre that I'm most willing to try... weird.

Not only is it the most generic harem I've ever read, IT'S THE MOST GENERIC STORY I'VE EVER READ OUT OF ANYTHING IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.
