Worst Shoujo characters

Don't know if this has been brought up before, but was wondering which characters in shoujo people hate the most? I noticed in quite a few of the shoujo mangas many of the characters really get on my nerves. The type I really hate is when they tend to be extremely airheaded, dumb and/ or totally useless with anything. Unfortunately when the main shoujo characters are like that I tend to not even get through the first few volumes of a series.
My top hated characters:
- Miaka from Fushigi Yugi
- Serena from sailor moon
- Aya from Ayashi no Ceres
haha... thats just me 🙂 , of course. I don't hate shoujo genre (I love it in fact), just some of the characters.
Anyway... as I said before, I'm curious, which character do you think is the worst?

melee86,
then you'd hate Chizumi and Fujomi 😀 I thought it was kinda cute series, but the main heroine was definitely a bumbler.
A shoujo character I despised was the evil character Sae in Peach Girl. Just wanted to slap her. (I haven't read Peach Girl: Sae's Story, or the second arc to Peach Girl, btw)

Any and all characters who act dumb, any characters who resort to gender stereotypes as in "we're females so all females must behave like _____", "you're female so all females have to behave like this", characters who are severely lacking in the ability to think and perceive properly. As well as characters who ,say, get raped or suffer a betrayal by someone they love/like and yet they continue to trust in those characters and act as though nothing out of the ordinary has occurred. (One of the characters in Hot Gimmick was raped and I was quite disgusted and horrified that she just acted like nothing had happened.)
Though, sometimes, such characters are okay if the mangaka can pull it off and make them evolve.
Oh and any and all characters who're over-melodramatic. Why do you have to embark on some "crazed destiny" of murder and rampage when a simple negotiation could've resolved the entire affair? (Yes, I'm talking about many of those 70's shoujo, which even some of the latest shoujo continue to emulate in terms of plot.)
Still, I think that many character stereotypes are due to the fact that the mangaka didn't do research about various character profiles and/or doesn't understand the different personalities before drawing up the mangaka. Or it's a case of the characters driving the plot when it ought to be the plot driving the characters.

Yeah...she's pretty darn horrible ^_^'''
I hate Kagome of Inuyasha. You either love her of you hate her, but she is just a B*TCH. She is so annoying T.T 🤢 >:-( 😔 dodges random objects thrown by Kagome-lovers Does Inuyasha count as a shoujo anyway? 😕
I liked Hatsumi from Hot Gimmick, but I'm not really sure why 🙂
I don't really like the main girl in Hayate no Gotoku. I mean, I don't hate her or anything, but she gets annoying and she's always mean to Hayate because she's just so damn immature >:-(

lol... Totally agree! I don't like when something like that happens and characters can just brush it off. When that happens I really want to punch the character that puts up with it! (of course I can't) Plus some of the stereotypes bug me as well (e.g. ditzy types).

Don't worry, i wont throw anything. 😀 . Yep, I agree, Kagome is kind of annoying, though I actually don't mind her for some reason (maybe cos she does have a brain). Anyway, I think Inuyasha is a shoujo (I think), or maybe it might be shounen, I don't remember.... 😕

Midori from Uwasa no Midori-kun? YES! I totally agree with you. She's a bad, bad, bad type of shoujo character.
Wimpy, ignorant airheads... people like that are the worst in shoujo. I mean, look at Midori, she got raped, she found out that her best guy friend had become a bad guy, and she still falls for him? wtf?
Miaka, Aya, the Sailor Moon girl... hmm. I don't really care much about them. They already fall on the "ignored" category. No offense to those who like them. 🙄

Guess it's kinda both 😁 She's smart sometimes, but the majority of the time she's just...retarded 😀

That's the twist, a very bad twist though. Midori doesn't seem to be wanting to defeat nor win the soccer over Tsukasa, it seems she wants to meet him more -__-
Diana from Forbidden Dance, she's in the way of a nice romance. -_-

after skimming current posts Woo, this thread looks so mean! 😲 The title says "worse" and yet all these people say that they "hate" so and so. I'm surprised m-w weights the word "hate" so lightly, actually the verb is 10x stronger in meaning than the noun it seems...
hate [noun] 1 a: intense hostility and aversion usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury b: extreme dislike or antipathy : loathing
hate [verb] 1 : to feel extreme enmity toward <hates his country's enemies
2 : to have a strong aversion to : find very distasteful intransitive verb : to express or feel extreme enmity or active hostilityworse [adjective]
1: of more inferior quality, value, or condition
2 a: more unfavorable, difficult, unpleasant, or painful b: more faulty, unsuitable, or incorrect c: less skillful or efficient
3: bad, evil, or corrupt in a greater degree : more reprehensible4: being in poorer health : sicker
There is "worse" as a noun, and as an adverb too, though.
And I'm not admin, but I think future posters in the thread should avoid saying that they "hate" a character, personally (yep, that "personally" meant "my humble opinion"). I know this would probably be some censoring but "hate" is such a strong word... 😳 There are some of the commentors that might, as I've seen a person that hates (/hated?) Usagi from Sailor Moon so, SO much that she built a webpage and list tearing apart her personality and maked a skit where she looks like an idiot or got beat up. But I would hope nobody resents any character that bad (well, except the evil ones that were "planted" or suppose to be by the mangaka). I think most of the hating should be done after the reflecting on the story is done, and the book is closed. 🙂 😉
I also think saying that one "hates" a character leaves it open for a fight to break out. Maybe if someone were to say "I hate...[so-and-so]" the one that is angered or annoyed will ask "why?" if no reason was listed. But it's too easy for a person to get angry about it especially if his or her character is used as a target.
Anyhow, Kagome isn't worth "worse character" in a sense that I resent her. I don't agree with her decisions when she picks on Inuyasha when she doesn't get her way, but I think she's allowed her fault along with other shoujo characters. (If they were perfect and used at the lead character they would be boring as there wouldn't be much to develop in their personalities.) And if comments I remember for a Inuyasha x Kagome AMV are any example of how some fans are juvenile or catty ("Inu belongs w/ Kikyo, not tat ho Kagome" "Kagome shuld go bck and fnd a boy in her own world!"), don't want to be part of that group. O_o
And Inuyasha is a shounen. It's in a shounen manga magazine, although Inuyasha being an obvious shounen isn't a given. I found a webpage that compared a screenshot where Kagome was sitting/standing with her legs closed and then the other version where her legs were spread apart so that you could see her underwear. 😲 😛 It was just ecchi though (not hentai, but a be crude looking), but I don't remember where I saw it (4chan?).
Miaka fosters a lot of resentment as I see it. I've seen people give her credit at the end of the series since she's matured though, although I don't know if it's the same that would like to see her...behead, I guess? ^_^U). And on the old Anime Turnpike there was this page that was linked called something like "The Torture Dungeon". I think the webmistress mentioned that some of the writings that people sent were too disturbing and that she wouldn't post them (maybe they were giving tortures that were like creepy ones serial murders do? O_o). I think that at least one of them that were posted mentioned she should be sexually assaulted repeatedly. There's some "oddness" in that comment in that how many times Miaka gets (potentially) stuck in that sort of situation. I think one would know what I mean after reading the manga or at least the anime. O_o
I can probably tolerate Miaka if she isn't having one of her "airhead" or "lapse in judgements" moments (I guess Yui didn't get labelled as "dumb" just because she's blonde in this series 😉) and that a "Tamahome!" "Miaka!" exchange isn't going on. I guess the verbal one is worse than the "I can't be with you" one.
Okay, this is a spoiler for about episode 40+ about when Miaka and company go back to Hokkan country.
But Miaka of the anime lost credit (it was something the writers did) when she meets Houki. And she mistakes her for Nuriko and yet Houki looks nothing like Nuriko since her hair is fashioned completed different and her hair is a very pale purple. And maybe the audience only find out that the animators screwed up by having Houki's character design different, because now Houki looks like Nuriko in the OAVs...and first series of the OAVs is a mess to make sense of since the writers tried to fix the small but big mistake made at episode 52.
Although I was reading Watase Yuu's freetalks in volume 13 and wasn't the manga well ahead of the manga?
This is a spoiler if you don't know who Taka is in Fushigi Yuugi. 😉
Taka from the anime isn't as good as the character he was as Tamahome. I guess I could be a shallow (but it wouldn't be in terms of looks), but Tamahome was much cooler than Taka. Taka's like an everyday guy, and he no longer seems as fun with him being money-hungry showing very rarely. I think that might have been the only humourous bone in his body. Oh yeah, he also seems a bit desperate devoting his life to Miaka. I'm not jealous and I think I'd find him smothering, and that wouldn't be surprise me as I'm a Scorpio and he's a Cancer. Miaka's a Cancer too. This only seems to apply if you know basic personality types in astrology and believe in that stuff. ;)
This is a spoiler if you don't know who Mayo is in Fushigi Yuugi. (It suppose to be like the 3rd story arc that continued Fushigi Yuugi, but I can't remember its name.) 😉
This girl's name is probably pronounced Mah-yoh, but I think her name being prounced "mayo" as in "mayonnaise" would be more suitable. :p She is a Mary Sue, except not of Watase Yuu, but of the fans that wrote to her that wished to be like Miaka, and Watase Yuu even wrote this at the end of the story. Watase Yuu, why are you catering to these people? :haha:  I guess it's what sell manga volumes. But anyone in the real world that does what Mayo does, well, even if the girl isn't insane enough to believe the fictional story of Fushigi Yuugi or The Four Gods Sky and Earth exists (although the matter of the 4 gods is at least based on some mythology in China), but does things like husband-stealing and is happy being a step-in-wife-replacement, needs help in my opinon.
And I only read a summary of this part of Fushigi Yuugi, but Mayo is pretty annoying even if the summary was bias. And when she tries to take Miaka's place, isn't that something a 14 year-old's logic would think be the solution to all her problems? Oh wait, maybe that was the target audience. O_o I hope Watase Yuu doesn't go down that path again (the end and story of the sequel was crappy but then she writes it anyhow. But then again I decided to read, well, watch it...oh man. >_>) and that no such mangaka does something similar to that mess. I've heard people review the anime and they've commented that this part sucks so bad, that it makes the part that came before it suck. :haha: That's bad, bad, bad. xD
And I guess since airhead shoujo leads are so irritating, maybe there should be some tag for manga like "smart girls" or "non-airhead shoujo leads". I mean so that we can avoid the ones like the girl is next to a haunted house and yet she is TERRIFIED of going into that house when it's run-down and there's the sense of well..there's only a 50% chance a person that goes in will come back out alive. 😉 But anyhow, she goes in without a second thought and obviously no plans. But then she's in this life-threatening or freaky situation (or maybe it would be so pathetic as a feather hits her foot and she think's it's flesh-eating bacteria...I guess I could understand that the being scared except for a feather being flesh-eating bacteria... O_o) and her screams are SO, so loud, I guess God must've heard them and then a knock-out looking guy rescues her. 😉 🤣 Heaven forbid a girl not be scared of the dark! ;P 😉 🙄
But then I guess that could be jealousy speaking as I doubt we, as readers, usually have a knight in shining armour that is always only an armslength away. 😉 Oh yeah, and if the guy character isn't that great (in terms of character depth), I guess he doesn't get to shine as much if the female character doesn't need to be rescued. :/ (But I've watched some of Furuba and this would probably be a fairly equal manga in terms of how guys treat girls. So yeah, it may not apply except in "cliche" manga.) I guess it's okay as long as I don't see a manga that shows the "cool guy" being in 99% of the panels (I mean this in an annoying way, as I believe even THE guy doesn't get 99% screen time) and the girl being treated like a second (or third)-class citizen, like she might as well be a stock character. 😲 xD (I guess I only make that face (xD) because I hope to never have to suffer/lay eyes on manga that..."bad," if you will. Actually, maybe manga like that should be called "outright terrible".)
I check the original post and "Worse Shoujo Characters" title was just a kinder-sounding title than "I hate [insert character name]". But it's my pessimistic and cynical side that says the "yeah, yeah, I agree, I hate that character too xD" (sort of like point-and-laugh, although that's mean as that's bullying as I see it) friendliness can't last. 😳 But of course I'd be happy if everyone proved me wrong. 😀

Wow... Takiko, you have out did yourself... AGAIN... I swear I'm probably the only person that bothers to read your entire posts. (And that is because I have to lol).
Let me just say a couple of things: First an admin shouldn't have to interfere with what people want to discuss about, as long as they follow the rules. If flaming starts well that's another matter. There was threads on this forum that where potentially EXTREME flame bait, and yet not much happened (ex: the believing in god thread).
And on another note, you seem to personify the characters a bit to much. They are just fictional characters. If I feel like beheading Miaka, nobody is going to really be physically hurt. You even seem to take into consideration the horoscope of these characters!!!
First horoscope is a scam, second, they where never BORN. So they can't have a horoscope.
And just to say, I didn't like Ayashi no Ceres nor Fushigi Yuugi either. But because I don't personify characters, I can't hate them. So I actually hate the author.
And hate as in I don't want to read anything written by them ever again. (not as in I want to kill them... well maybe giving them a good fright but not much more)

Takiko, how can you bully a fictional character?
Is Matentei Loki Ragnarok a shoujo?
If it is, there is one character that I dislike even more than Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi. It's that pink haired girl from MLR (I can't remember her name).
She's obsessive, there is nothing wrong with that, but 11 times out of 10 she throws herself headlong into a situation, badgers people to let her come along when she's not invited, irritatingly browbeats everyone into making her apart of the any and all situations, and when it does happen and danger pops up she turns into a sniveling little girl, starts running around screaming like a headless chicken, and makes Loki rescue her every time.
😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐
She never learns though. Sadly, she always lives to see the next day to repeat this all over again.
