I've seen a lot of adventure manga and games that the main characters carry a longsword,broadsword,katana, and even twin blades to fight evil or injustice. But in some of those genres there are main characters whose weapon of choice can be a pocket knife(like Tohno Shiki from Tsukihime), a spear, or even a non-bladed weapon to fight with. I actually don't see that kind of main characters with those kinds of weapons with my knowledge so can anyone please help me out?

Question: Is it more interesting if the hero characters carry a weapon that is not a sword, or you prefer the traditional longsword/broadsword/katana theme?

I'm guessing Kekkaishi is different, but its not really weapons its more like a different style of fighting.

With regards to your question, what makes an action/adventure character interesting is more what that character does with a weapon rather than what the weapon is. The characters of Rurouni Kenshin primarily wield katana, but variations in the katana's use (through emphasis on special techniques) keeps the manga from becoming repetitive. On the other hand, Musashi and Kojiro of Vagabond, both of whom wield katana, are kept interesting because of the displays of sword prowess against various realistic opponents.

As for your request, it'd help if you had a list we can see, but I'll recommend some anyway:
Blade of the Immortal: Lots of different weapons, some more unconventional than others.
Eden: The character Kenji Asai is a beast when he's wielding his knife.

hmmm... if ur ok with shoujo... and I hesitate to call it this... mainly because it has strong shounen elements, in Tokyo Crazy Paradise the main heroine character uses an unusual weapon. Not sure exactly what its called, but it seems to be a blade on a chain which she swings around when fighting the bad guys.

I'm sure you've heard of this but Hunter x Hunter I guess....

Vinland Saga protagonist uses double short swords.

Coud Van Giruet from Erementar Gerade uses a Hook-and-Chain.
Kazuki Muto from Busou Renkin uses a (rather large) lance.

What about Luffy from One Piece? He uses stretchy arms punching as a main weapon 😛

As for if i prefer a sword? well a sword is Ok, but i think it makes it more interesting if its something unusual...i personally like it when the characters have a special ability which is inbuilt into their body rather than a traditional weapon.

i can't help but say berserk sure gutts uses a sword but it's hardly a normal sword. and besides it's an awsome series. (in my opinion).

Mahou Tsukai Kurohime The main Charackter use 4 guns and the Heroine use aMagic bullet gun that is unusual i think. Its a advenure in wild west style
