Also, Ares might fit, there are three protagonists though, and it only applies to one of them. And none of them start off weak...
Argh, I hate when this happens, I can remember a series in detail but not it's name... Does anyone know of the one I'm thinking of: It's a shounen where two regular guys transfer to the same school and coincidentally both decide to redo their image becoming delinquents. But where as one is naturally a good guy the other is undeniably a terrible, amoral person. I can't remember the name but the art isn't the greatest. If anyone knows please recommend as it definitely fits.

He has a quite twisted/dark view of things and acts on them, his personality really comes out later on in the series.

Akumetsu certainly fits the bill.
Dragon Eye Maybe? Most times he doesn't act like it, but underneath he is.
Aflame Inferno He certainly seems to be going down that path.... but its a toss-up at the moment.
Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?

In that vein, let's add Wolf Guy.
Everyone's like that. They'll say whatever they need to. I don't trust people who talk big. When they get pressured, they pussy up big time. That's just how humans are.
I ain't gonna be used by you guys. The person'd have to be brainless for someone to be happy being called a hero and shoulder your troubles.

Edit: Oh sorry. Wolf Guy and Burning Hell may not quite fit the OP's requirements because these guys're already badass. Definitely hits the 'Dark, Twisted main character' requirement, though.

Seikon no Quasar - I feel its only fair to warn you that this manga is borderline hentai. The anime seems to hold back a bit on the sexual content but there is only one episode subbed so far... and seeing as how the main character draws his power from sucking tits i honestly have no idea where the anime might go lol.

Thirding Akumetsu. I think that's exactly what you're looking for.
At first I thought Joshua, one of the bad guys from Chrono Crusade, would fit the bill, since he starts out in a sick bed but is giving evil powers at the beginning of the series. I guess it doesn't work since he is the villain, not the hero
and because Joshua becomes good again once the "evil spell" is taken off of him.
