Several friends actually sat down and discussed the best way to get me and another girl "hooked." In the end, they used our curiosity against us, made a big deal about showing it to other people in front of us, eventually shoving the books on us for a few days (refusing to take them back until we read them) and from there, working us up to asking for loans.

I started watching anime when I was about 4, I noticed the difference between my regular cartoons and this new show on tv and liked it a lot more. Been enjoying it off and on ever since.
As for manga, I've only been reading that for about a year and a half, but I started because I wanted to know the end of an anime that I was watching. I knew about it, just hadn't bothered trying it out yet. Now I'm really glad that I did, I'm more into that than anime.

Like Raeryn, I started watching anime at a young age. There were anime aired and manga sold in stores where I lived when I was a kid. My first anime and manga was possibly Doraemon or some similar kids stuff. Internet is a good way to read more and varied mangas. A lot of good stuff is not easily found in stores even in countries where book stores sell manga.
I really started getting into manga when I was 15. My mum bought me a book on how to draw it, then like, a couple of months later, I found a whole world of manga on the internet and have been hooked ever since then.
I've always watched anime as a kid, but I was just never aware it was called anime

I was 19. After I successfully passed my Abitur (graduated from high school) I moved to another city 400 km in the east, Bavaria rocks.
Well after the moving and all i still had 5 or 4 months until college started but no friends to spend time with.
So I sat lonely in my seat and was surfing the internet until I accidently started a video. This Video was episode one of "Outlaw Star".
Before I always thought anime is just for kids like Pokemon and such but I had nothing else to do and so I simply started watching.
Yeah well I watched all Episodes in 3 days and was actually pretty sad that there wasn't a second season. After these 3 days I still had no friends so I searched for another Anime of the same guy who uploaded this. Well little by little I found a databank with the genres that interest me and so on and son which was pretty much the beginning of my downfall into the endless pit of anime/manga.
Well then I watched the anime "Dears" and after the 6 episodes I was kinda pissed that the ending wasn't a real ending. That's when I found out that there is actually a manga (!). Since I wanted to know the ending I checked out the manga and it really really sucked.
I didn't understand the order in which I have to start reading, which is the next panel and such problems. Well but I fought it trough.
And today I'm sitting here, writing a boring story on a manga forum and reading list with nearly 300 series ;(

I was about 7 years old. My mom was taking me over to her boyfriend's (now my step-dad) house. His sister is a total anime addict (like I am now ) and she was watching Inuyasha. Me and my mom sat down and started watching it too. I've been hooked on anime ever since. My mom liked inuyasha but she isnt all that into anime

For anime, I randomly found anime while channel surfing when I was around 9.
For manga, my friend lent me one when I was 15.

My uncle. He first introduced it to me when I was seven. He let me watch Fushigi Yuugi with him then.
Those were some good times.

My sister and my old man had me watching it at 1 and a half years old. They are the best, so this is why I blame them for my yaoi addiction.

I thought I posted on this already. O__O.
Well, I watched a drama (Mars), then I found out there was a manga version of it in my school's library, I started reading and the rest is history.

I always followed the Pokemon and Yugioh animes when I was a kid, but it wasn't until I wandered by a window section in the library I always stayed in after school that I discovered manga. Marmalade Boy's beautiful artwork first caught my eye, and I later got into reading scanlated manga when I got hooked on the incomplete Pita-Ten series another library carried.

I started watching anime when I was 4 but I wasn't aware that it was anime and I wasn't that into it either. Then some years later I moved to Japan. At school sometimes the topic of Sailor Moon would come up and my classmates would say they were SO over it, that's SO last year, etc. I was clueless. Then a year later I returned to the states and all the girls were like ZOMG Sailor Moon! (wut? I thought it was over!) So I finally decided to watch it just to see what it was. I was immediately hooked.
As for manga, one day I was really bored so I thought I would try reading the Sailor Moon manga but I couldn't find a copy. So I started looking into other manga and discovered scanlations. It was at this time that I got myself a new roommate who turned out to be an anime/manga otaku. She turned my fledgling interest in manga into a near obsession.
