Well the thread on whether you all prefer josei or shoujo got me thinking about more mature shoujo (not smut neccessarily) which made me think about shoujo aimed at younger kids/girls. So I was wondering what shoujo would you put in each category. *these categories I guess

*10 - 13
*13 - 15
*16+
*18+
*ALL

~~ Kinda diffrent
Mature shoujo ~ i figure the manga that is inbetween regular shoujo and josei.
Josei

Well, for me; regular shoujo would be aimed @ girls 15 years and under.
Mature shoujo; the inbetweens would be 16+ I guess.
As for josei, probably 18+.
But I'm pretty sure this is very inaccurate.
Just a personal opinion.

In my opinion, most shojo are for pre-teen and teenage girls. Junior high or high shool aged. Josei would be for women, college students and older.

I think that you guys misunderstood what I was meaning actually XD;;

I meant specific manga. Maybe i should list some first. I was thinking that it would be handy in case someone was like "my little sister is getting into my manga what would be appropriate" or you know when reccing something to someone it always helps I think. Maybe it's the future teacher in me that doesn't want people reading inappropriate things XD;;

Ultra Maniac

*10 - 13
Full Moon Wo Sagashite (maybe?)
Ultra Maniac (?)

*13 - 15
Fruits Basket
Power
Aoi Spice
Complex
INVU
Good Luck

*16+
Hana Yori Dango
Backstage Prince
Kagen No Tsuki **
*18+
Deep Love

Well I was thinking that mature manga like say MARS would be fine for 16+ but I don't think that something like Deep Love or Life is appropriate for minors :/

I think Shugo Chara and D.N.Angel are for girls under 14.

God Child and Ludwig Revolution are probably for older girls and women (16+). It's not that younger girls can't read them (they will find if they are interested in manga enough). Most of them probably don't quite understand or are not that interested.

There is a short manga called A Ticket to Heaven which I think is aimed at girls under 13. However, it is one of the most touching manga I have read. There is no smut or adult content but it is definitely not childish and can make you think of something. It is a manga about friendship and relationship with family, presented in a creative way. I am sure people of many ages can learn from it. So I say it is for kids as well as older audience.

^^ I think I know where you're coming from.

Perhaps the best way to go around this is by referring to the magazine that the manga was first published in. Most publishers run monthly magazines that appeal to different and specific age groups.

Younger shoujo manga are commonly published with Primary schoolers in mind. There are ones that cater to the younger age group (Kindergarten - Grades 1 to 3) and ones for older age group (Grades 4 to 6 - Junior High).

This is not definite, but I think Ribon, Nakayoshi, and Ciao fall into the first category.
Then you have ChuChu, Lala, Hana to Yume, Margaret.

Next 'up', you have Sho-Comi (suggestive smut), Cheese (mostly smut?) ...these are probably ones you want to avoid 😛

Cookie, Flowers and Melody probably fall between shoujo and josei. (older shoujo, 15+ ?)

Moving up the age ladder, you might then come to know of Petit (josei, smut ? <*Midnight Secreta..., Private Pri... *> ) , Kiss (josei, non-smut <Nodame Cantabile, Hotaru no HIkari> ), Chorus (josei, ?non-smut <HOney and Clover, Niconico Diary, Spicy Pink> ), Young YOU <Honey and Clover> and many more.

Some manga, like Nana, 'moves' from one magazine to another. If I remember correctly, Nana was first published in Ribon, but as the content became more serious and mature, the publisher moved the manga's publication to Ribon's sister-magazine, Cookie.

I could've gotten some magazines wrong, but this should give you a general idea on how to tackle the age issue. 🙂

I think there are a lot of books that are enjoyable for all ages. Mainly Sailor Moon but I think everyone should read that one! 😛

For 16+ - Nana, Peach Girl, Skip Beat!

13-15 - Tail of the Moon, Vampire Night, Honey Hunt (from what i've read), Doubt!!!, Monkey High

12 and under - There aren't many. I find a lot of shojo sneak in smut and sex, even if it's just pressure from peers to be having sex.

Oh my gosh... o_O I'm 14 and I totally disagree... XD For me:

10-11

11-12

13-15

16+

I've read all of these and I don't see any reason why people should stop reading these if they feel they are mature enough to read it.

There are shoujo for younger girls than that, although those are usually considered kodomo. Like Hamtaro. And I think there are some that are intended for women quite a bit older than 18 - middle-aged women. The Harlequin manga magazine seems to be aimed at older women.

I think this thread is pretty accurate. But it doesn't mean all the readers are within the age groups. I am too much older than most shoujo and josei readers are supposed to be but still read some of the titles from those.
