I dislike love triangles/harems and prefer plot twists too.

The ideal romance plot would have a hot, cute, funny, attractive, interesting, well-developed guy as the protagonist. There could be a female who is his love interest, who likes him or is his friend. The plot should focus on mystery, adventure, action, or drama (some well-done drama, any type, including sports/sci-fi, etc not the shallow type found in many shoujo). There should be some side characters who also play an important part. Actually there can be more than two main characters. Love quadrangle is fine as long as the persons involved are two females and two males, not a harem. The male lead and female lead can date different people and don't have to end up together in the end. As long as it is reasonable I am fine with the ending.

I also like romance plots focusing on different couples rather than one. That's be more interesting. Switching partners is good too (could be good comdey-drama if handled well).

I don't think what I like is easily found in the manga world. 😮

I don't like series that the entire plot revolves around romance. I don't like "childhood friends" romances. I don't like "love at first sight" and I don't like when the girl is looking for a guy and doesn't feel complete without one. I don't like when everyone is perfect.
What I like is when people become friends gradually and that developes naturally into romance as they tackle other issues. I like strong, female leads who can take care of themselves and I need character growth!

EDIT:
Actually, "love at first sight" can be kind of fun if she ends up with someone else...

I like... realistic plots. In a love triangle, I want to see good reasons for why the male leads like the female character, and I want to see her develop her emotions about which she likes better and why. In 'love at first sight' plots, I want to see a relationship where the characters realize that love isn't just skin deep, and have plenty of pitfalls while understanding the other's personality etc. And I'm always searching for endings where the girl doesn't fall in love with some idiot 'bad boy' bishounen, especially when she has a perfectly nice guy by her side already. Ugh.

So in general, I want realism from the plot and *growth *from the characters.

I like more romances that are realist but at the same time have some fantasy to go a long with it.

A plot where you just don't know who will end up with who...

I Completely agree!! 😃

Thirded. Makes for less cliches. 😃

I keep confusing Max gama with Dragonfire...>_>

I thought I would like that cliche plot device where the couple lives together, but surprisingly I don't. I DO however like watching it. That is my most favourite drama plot ever (exception --> Full House, crap imho).

I like mangas where the girl protects the guy, except the guy doesn't really need protecting. Or when the girl is kind of boyfriend-like in general, it's fun to read. ex. Koukou Debut, Beast Master, Yo no Na wa Zushio (buhbuhbuhbuhboy I'm a boy zukatarazuka --> TOO HILARIOUS I definitely recommend the last manga to anyone who likes to laugh).

i love it when the characters have extremely minimal experience in love..like romance-retarded or something.and there must be a solid reason why they're in love unlike the typical plots in shoujo manga... 😎

I don't understand why I like typical gender-bender school plots where they usually end up sharing a dorm room like Tenshi ja Nai!! and Boku ni Natta Watashi so much, but I adore them. =)

Even the non-typical ones, like Ouran High School Host Club. =)

*plots like student/teacher relationships. e.g.Tsuyogari (FUJIWARA Kiyo)
*plots with young, handsome step-father and step-daughter falls in love with each other. e.g.Lovesick
*plots involving showbiz.

I've mentioned this a bunch of times in several of my other posts, but what I look for in all manga is character development.

That comes second, but then the plot would be first. Nothing cliche.

Strong characters without the stereotype.

A slow and developing romance, but nothing drawn out for too long.

Shoujo manga is 😀

Well, I have a fondness for reverse harems (especially if they contain twins), but a lot of those aren't very well-done.

My very favorite is the kind of understated, reserved romance used in Emma. Too bad there aren't many of those.

Fantasy Romances are the best. At least one or two of the guys has to be decent looking. I don't care for harem too much. The lead female has to be someone that I can associate with. She has to have normal problems, not something stupid or petty. (Example: Oh my grades are bad, I wanna run away cus I can't take the pressure! SUCK!) Love triangles are fun. I do hate it when love triangles turn to something that resembles more of a octagon!
