Quote from N0x_

However, I actually find it believable that most scores displayed online will be higher than average. 120+ average scores being boasted by different forums shouldn't be rare. Some factors to take into consideration:

  1. People on these forums tend to be nerdy and enjoy things like... reading/writing over more passive forms of entertainment. I.E. reality TV, etc.
  2. They volunteered to take an IQ test just to test themselves for fun. They felt confident enough in their own intellect, and might actually find enjoyment in these things.
  3. There's a survey bias/response bias from the possibility that people with higher scores are more likely input their results and/or post them.
  4. Those are 70+ votes out of tens of thousands of MU users, and maybe thousands of active MU posters. One in every 400-700 people have IQ 145+, so it's not a big deal.
  5. Communication skills don't exactly have the strongest correlation with IQ. My brother has an IQ of 170, 2350 SAT, GPA 4.9 in HS, GPA 4.0 in college, Double Majoring in the two hardest major at a top ranked university. His communication skills are inferior to mine, and mine aren't anything to brag about. 😐 A lot of people with high IQ are socially awkward in fact. I think he just thinks too quickly and doesn't bother to explain his line of reasoning to people or wait for people to keep up with him.

Of course, since communication skills are more important than most technical skills in corporate American, high IQ doesn't necessarily translate into high income. Also taking into acct the fact that a lot of people claiming to have high IQ also admit to being lazy, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of us here are merely shut-in geniuses.

While most of the things you state generally have the potential to be true, a lot of them are also either fallacious or misguided.

Response bias matters, but then again, it's pretty hard to authenticate an online IQ test, which do, statistically speaking, try to report higher IQs in order to please potential customers.

When you talk about "tens of thousands" of MU users, you have to remember that far from all of them even glance at the forums in general, much less chatterbox, much less this specific thread. Even if that were irrelevant, and accounting from response bias, the results shouldn't change by a full factor of ten. I would be willing to bet significant money, even if we did have a way to accurately check this, that a lot of the responses are rough self-estimates from people who have never actually been tested but have a high opinion of their intelligence. Heck, that probably goes for the category below that as well, which is also well outside the regular curve.

As far as communication skills go, obviously I was ribbing the same group I've been poking fun at the whole time, but I will say that essentially all (though not quite, let's say 90% or so) of the people with higher IQs that I have become acquainted with tend to simply be better observers, which does often lend better communication skills if they stop and think for a moment. Given that I have also been thoroughly underwhelmed time and time again by self-styled "geniuses," I may have a bit of a bias, but that subgroup is so much larger than those with legitimate credentials and abilities that it's hard for me to take anyone who claims intelligence seriously without an adequate example to evaluate.

All that said, IQ is outdated and largely irrelevant anyway. It's a good tool for measuring a couple specific aptitudes, but you won't find many experts who weren't educated during the 70s, mostly, who would still claim that it's the best measure of 'intelligence' (which I would argue is largely behavioral anyway, but that's another story entirely.) This is still an evolving field, after all.

SM score? I must be a pervert, because this makes me think of the sado-masochism scale...

I declare my IQ as 84... Because I don't know my actual IQ and typically only people with an IQ higher than 100 would want to post their score.

Enough to move my hips in a piston movement.
I've never tested. Don't plan to, I don't like single player stuff.
Just the fact that you are capable of getting different results from
a test at different times makes it obsolete to me.

While that is very funny, I don't think that action requires any intelligence at all. Just ask the monkeys, the horses, the cows, the dogs..... you get the drift. 😛

You know, after I voted and saw the poll numbers, I was a tad incredulous at first... and then I sat down and thought about it, and realized that most of my other otaku friends are also rather bright... So maybe the results aren't entirely inaccurate?

That depends on various factors. Basically, an otaku in a country where manga is not popular is someone different from the norm. For example, and otaku in America (pure speculation) may not spend as much time goofing around in the worst sense of the word. An otaku in India (from experience) is different from the people who spend almost all their time roaming around town. These type of people are not flocking sheep, but people who think, form their own opinions, and are stick to them. Usually, people of this kind tend to use their brains a tad more, because of obvious reasons.

Just my opinion, though.

I think that's a very reasonable opinion, and not entirely untrue. I suppose that the trend could be said to be true of people attempting to experience any form of foreign culture though, regardless of origin or medium.

That's the point. All the intelligence that actually matters for the humankind.

Mammy and Bunny both have high SM scores, like Iva-chan.

I agree with you on principle, but I believe we owe the planet an apology and a fix-up before heading back to our caves.

No, IQ < SM.
I don't know my IQ. SM is easier to know, right?
