The male leads in shoujo manga are supposed to make you swoon. They're supposed to be a personification of the ideal boyfriends, or some kind of fantasy girls have. But more often than not they're absolute jerks. Who are the worst love interests you've come across in shoujo and josei romances?

My very least favorites:

Soushi from Zettai Kareshi: He's an overpossesive, obsessed jerk. Honestly, I'd rather be with a robot than him any day.
Hiroki from Ultra Maniac: He acts like he's going out with Nina purely because he has nothing better to do.
Touga from Revolutionary Girl Utena. But at least he's mostly supposed to be unlikeable.

Taichiro from Watashi no... Megane-kun. He needs to get therapy and go to anger management classes. And from the beginning I didn't like him at all >.> He treated his childhood friend who loves him like a piece of crap and then suddenly declared his love for her when he got jealous when a sempai confessed to her? I would have slapped him and told him to get a life. I would have gone out with the sempai who has healthy feelings for me, too. >.>

Kiriya from Kare First Love...if he really loves her why does he have to force her to do it with him?? tsktsktsk...

I don't think I ever swooned over (or remember) any shoujo romance male characters. Well, I don't read many of those.

I hate that guy from kare first love too, and that one from MARS. They are actually the some.

All in Yuu Watase works I readed, except that one from Zettai kareshi.

EMO´s. There are some. Like that one in Hana yori dango. Not Domouji, but that first one. Or that one in shinji doumei cross.
And the too quiet types (Yuki Sohma). But I like the quiet inteligent computer type. They must be quiet.

The perfect guys. I don´t want a perfect guy, would make me feel inferior. Like Sano in hana-kimi.

Shota´s like Honey-senpai or Momiji.

The fuuny and stupid types. Except Doumoji.

The best guys in shoujo are in Omukae desu and Lovely complex. You know, clever, funny, just normal, when at the end you will say: Oh, that girl will be really happy with him. - that´s how it goes.

I don't know, I read a lot of shoujo(yes I am a guy, and no I am not gay, I happen to like romance once in a while), I guess I have to agree with the ones that hate the guys in smut manga, I don't know why but I too think that they are the worst love interests.

So far I haven't read a manga that I didn't like the main love interest(save for those in smut mangas)

The love interest from Real Love (ODA Mitsuki)...how the girl could still say she loves him and stay in a relationship with him after all the crap he did, is beyond me. >.< And his excuse? "Sorry, I was only trying to protect you...that's why I slept with all those other girls, hit you, and hurt you..." O_____O

haha, i laughed out loud when i saw this. Too true too true. Mind you, the female leads are so helpless and airheaded that it's almost like they all deserve each other.

yep perfect guys are nice to think about, but in those mangas, the girl always ends up looking really inferior next to them, and there's always the "am i good enough for him?" arc. And i like the relationships where there's a 'you help me, i help you' seesaw thing going on, as in he helps her with her problems, she helps him with his. If the guy's perfect, then it's just like he's forever looking after her while she plays damsel in distress coughtwilight*cough

Plus guys with complexes or troubled pasts are more interesting. And more human. Which, if you really wanna get 'fan girl kyaa', makes them better to sigh over, since there's a more realistic chance that you'll meet someone like that in real life.

Takumi from Nana. He's actually a pretty interesting character, but as a love interest, I don't like him at all.

I also find all "hot" young male teachers a huge turn off.

I don't read much shoujo manga though. It's mostly horror for me, so usually the love interests die before I can say whether or not they actually sucked. 🤣
