Series with the most painful cliffhangers.

Went back five pages and didn't see a topic on this.
We've all experienced them. Hero apparently gets killed. Wait a week. Heroine is drugged with creepy guy ready to rape her. Wait a month. Guy confesses suddenly to girl. Series gets canceled. Which series, anime or manga, and which cliffhanger really sent you up the wall? Also, are you the type to avoid these type of series or get painfully hooked to them?
Personally, I prefer to avoid them until they are completed. Sadly, I tend to be impatient and pick them up, hoping I'd have the willpower to stop during a more tame chapter or after a major story arc is finished.
For anime, my most memorable cliffhanger in recent memory would be the ninth episode of Kurenai.
Seeing the pack led by the incest lover and the pyscho leaving with Murasaki after kicking everyone's asses... that scene was just nasty.
For manga, Kodomo no Jikan.
A lot of the chapters end in a nasty cliffhanger but when Rin's father suddenly wanted to adopt her, waiting for the next month's chapter was a whole new level of pain.

I agree with you on the Manga cliffhanger, that was horrible @__@
And for anime, i guess.....well idk.
Er there are alot. In general, cliff hangers of xxxHolic come to mind.
Dunno for anime but as for specifics of manga: HnI Chapter 341
Three words: Geromachi goes bald.
🤣
I'm sure there are moar but HnI being the current manga I'm reading, it's the freshest in my mind xD
And then there's chapter 16 of Viewfinder
Akihito gets the gun and goes off the edge xDD
-I'll add 'em as I remember lol.
Edit: Ouran Host Club Chap 61
Well I kinda knew she was going to say no but STILL it was kinda nerve wracking

XXXholic cliffhangers hasn't been as painful recently as the Tsubasa Chronicle stuff for me though. Especially the most recent chapters.
The death curse story arc has been a real kick in the nuts so far. Out of all the characters I do not like the idea of dying, Sakura would rank pretty close to the top.
Ouran has always struck me as the opposite of nerve racking. Everything was always so comedic that it's tough to take seriously. It's not like Unbalance x Unbalance where the author does his best to knock the wind out of you.
Example:
Chapter eleven where the teacher finds out her pregnancy test was positive after she woke up half naked next to a student. Turned out to be a fake out/set up for a later arc but at the time, quite intriguing.
Then again, I read that chapter of Ouran and then a bunch of the chapters following it in one shot so the effect was likely diluted.

the hiatus in the first season of code geass between episode 23 and 24+25 (final episode), and then the ending of episode 25 of the exact same season
both were unbearable.
besides that... nothing comes to mind really.

Bitter Virgin - I don't really need to give any particular instance seeing as every chap ended in a cliffhanger. But nevertheless, the most painful would have to be when we waited like a whole year for the tankoubon to be released.
I can't remember anymore atm.

Fire Candy. SO MANY QUESTIONS LEFT UNANSWERED! T_T I won't say the ending wasn't badass, because it was, but the author could've done a better job finishing it.
Also, Blaster Knuckle had a horrid cliffhanger at the end, but made up for it because of its sheer awesome-ness. (Think Claymore, but with a Giant Bad-ass black guy instead of puny half-yoma girls.) XD
As for not completed series...
Skip Beat So painful waiting for the reaction of the director to her Natsu. T_T
Ubel Blatt ARRGH! They left off at such a painful part.
Just when the people looking to capture him found him.. Theres been more painful waits for this series, but this one is pretty bad.
Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?

Well after Tsubasa took on such a serious tone during the second half of the story I haven't been all that into it. And I know normally Ouran is too comedic to take seriously but the ending of 61 kinda left me craving more xD.
Oooh I got another one btw
Tokyo Crazy Paradise
When Asagi or whatever her name get's her arm cut off. I was kinda left in shock for a while...
Also, the 5 month long hiatus's of Hunter x Hunter are pretty painful >.>

King of Thorn has cliffhangers at the end of every volume and they are VERY painful. The way the author puts them makes it nearly impossible to think of what could happen next (its always so vague). He also throws them in at a perfect and unexpected time. It makes you want to keep reading it.
I do agree with xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa's cliffhangers.
The stuff that happens in Tsubasa post volume 15 have some awesome cliffhanger twists. CLAMP is good with that kind of stuff though :p
Best mangas:
saikano
ibara no ou
yotsubato!
clover (clamp)
Rabbit Doubt for me lately.
It's about to end!!! o____o

Wow. There's a cliffhanger I'm glad I didn't have to wait long to get past. Only started reading that series after it was nearly done so I was just shocked instead of writhing in pain for an ungodly amount of time.
Thought that girl was gimped for life at the end of that chapter.

The ending of the first season of Code Geass. And I had to wait for a long, long time for the second season.
That's the only one I can think of right now.

There aren't many series that I am reading while they are ongoing, or many that I have finished that way, so my selections are limited. There are a bunch of other series with huge cliffhangers, but I didn't notice so much, since the next chapter/volume was available. For those that weren't, though...
Immortal Rain
Especially since the author took
almost **two years **to get the
next volume published.
Volume 8:
World-wide disaster has been averted, Eury survived nearly being drowned in a sinking ship, and everyone is getting along well. Time for a sigh of relief? NOOO. The author decides to have Rain on the verge of death/insanity, Yuca telling Sharem that he is not her son, and Machika strong-arming Yuca into allowing her to come with him to recover Rain's cross. Cue end of volume 8 + 2-year wait. And it'll probably be 3 years by the time volume nine actually comes out in the United States.
Nabari no Ou
But that chapter was 80 pages, so the author is forgiven.
Chapter 50:
Yukimi is on the verge of death from being stabbed in the stomach AND losing his right arm ^^;;, we don't know whether Miharu is dead or not, and Yoite is gone, but we don't know how or what kind of effects it will have on the world. Thobari gets a panel, Kouichi is an owl, and Raikou and Gau are in the middle of fighting for their lives. The next month could not come fast enough. Of course, the author is fond of cliffhangers in any form, but that one was particularly cruel.
**Vampire Knight **
Chapter 39:
Yuuki is a vampire, the school is being attacked, Rido has awakened, and Ichiru shoots his own brother with a vampire gun. Sometimes, the world is just not fair. Neither was this cliffhanger.

I agree. The end of season 1 nearly killed me with thwe anticipation. I also agree with Alaena Night for Nabari no Ou and Vampire Knight. Cliffhangers like that make me wish I could read japanese.
I also add 07 Ghost Chapter 18 and 19
Teito is captured by a wars before Hakuren and The Eye of Michael has seperated from Teito and strikes against the military whilst Teito is falling with both Frau and the military after him. The next chapter couldn't come fast enough.
Number Chapter 3
Showdown between Sakura and Toneriko and 7 months until the next chapter was released, too cruel.
The pen is mightier than the sword...and considerably easier to write with.
