I once watched Kodomo no Omocha at an anime club, and all the guys seemed to really enjoy it. Same with Magic Knight Rayearth.
Apparently, Shin Shunkaden, a shoujo manga, was the inspiration for the ultra-GAR Shin Angyo Onshi.
A lot of guys seem to think Natsume Yuujinchou is a shounen.

Since no one mentioned it, the Honey and Clover anime, though I'm not sure how entertaining it may be to a 14 year old boy compared to someone a bit older. It's listed under both Josei and Shoujo, but my guess is that the shoujo classification is only because it's published in the shoujo beat magazine. Your call, really.

I haven't watched much anime mostly because I'm really picky too... so I kinda understand a little.
I would suggest that you have him watch Witch Hunter Robin. Now, this one is dark, but I think it would be kinda like Death Note (I did not watch the anime... but I read the manga so that's what I'm basing it on.) in the dark kind of a way. But, before to have him watch it... I'd suggest you watch it first, seeing how you would be a better gauge at what he would like in that respect.
Maybe 12 Kingdoms but I think it had an abrupt ending... can't remember 'cause it's been a while.
And I guess my final suggestion would be Spice and Wolf... I have only seen the first few chapters, but it seems like a decent series... though I'm not to sure on what genre it goes into.
Edit: oops messed up on one of the links.

I'd second Honey and Clover anime. Good rec. 🙂
I think Clamp's old stuff and Count Cain, etc are perhaps too dark for him.
I would recommend (anime):
Ginban Kaleidoscope
The Good Witch of the West (manga is shounen and goes into more details. Anime is good too.)
Tactics (anime is definitely more comedy and light-hearted)
Detective Loki (I only read the manga of this but you could try the anime)
Ghost Hunt - with horror elements but generally light-hearted
Yes, why not try Natsume Yuujinchou too (I prefer the manga. The anime is not bad...).
