These types of things are usually wrong or misinterpted by people.
Maybe it will be the END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT! but not literally the end of the world.
I believe that the human race has a future or the world would have ended in 1962 by Thermonulear war.

And I don't support any of THIS...all of this...
The reason? There's been loads of prophecies made by mankind but people took it srsly and lol, what happened..? We Still LIVE in 2008.As for the Mayans being 'accurate astronomers' is bullc**p..why? They have no scientific basis on it, how could they predict "WORLD'S GONNA END" when they can't predict global issues of the present time? Did they Know that there's gonna be Cars..industries, Global warming and pollutions in the 21 Century?
And why would they CARE to predict the End of the world when they're obviously can't LIVE to see their so-called 'apocalypse'...
lol, I like you Hermit Chan. I agree.
Why thank you!! I'm so glad to see someone being sceptical liek yourself!

I can't help but think part of the reason why people choose to believe the end of the world theory is because they want it to happen. Their life has been so safe and dull that this new introduction of fate makes life spicy. 🤣
Lol. Issac Newton would have shot himself if he reads this.

Don't really know all that much about the science bit, but the religious/Christians predicting the end of the world is idiotic. Anyone who knows their Bible well enough to predict stuff like that will also know that it says that the end of the world will come when no one expects it (don't believe me, read Matthew 24:36-44; and I just tried about five different versions, so you can't pull the whole "different translations" stuff on me). So, my theory is, if people think the world is going to end, I'm safe.

I want to know where in the Bible does it say that the world will end in 2012?
I want to know what made the bible so reliable in the first place... just because is the most widely distributed book and so many people believe in it doesn't mean that the bible is right and everything else is wrong.
PS:
That is a bad translation, If I remember well the Mayan prediction said the world would change on 2012, change = end?
Is silly to get scared over this, but I wouldn't be surprised if something BIG happened on 2012, Mayans did things that where impossible to all the other civilizations in the world, and they did them with no special tools (that we know about).
Quote from akire_and_atem
it's not the world ending what the Mayans predicted, it's the end of the era as we know it, actually it's already happening...
let me explain: the Mayans calculated that on December 21 2012 (i think its the 21st), the world more importantly the humans would stop being the way they are: planet Earth would start showing signs that the humans were killing it so Earth had to try and make a balance (we see this in Thailand with the tsunami and in China with the earthquake, for example)
from then on it was up to humanity to take a turn in the way we are living (in excess) so we can make our children have a brighter future
we also can see this in the whole "healthy & ecological" ideas the media has brought into our minds...and also ourselves making the change because we want to, not because we HAVE tothat's what the Mayans meant (I'm almost an expert in Mayan and Egyptian history/archeology lol)
also the date is an estimated one, remember that the Mayans had 13 months of 28 days plus 5 which were called "the time of no time" dedicated to contemplate their thoughts, the changes the next year would bring, etc)
anyway what I'm trying to say here it's that maybe the date already came and went or maybe we're about to take the next step...for purposes of the poll i voted "other"...
I hope i could clear up some doubts, if somebody knows something i didn't plz feel free to pm me or post it here so we can clear up the doubts
have a bright day and a shiny night!!
😀
See? No OMG THE WORLD IS GOING TO END, Mayans predicted some kind of change would come, what it is about? only the Mayan high priests knew... and they are dead

Well, first off, the Bible has proven to be one of the most consistantly accurate historical books. Second off, when they're talking about the end of the world from a Biblical standpoint, it's a RELIGIOUS thing. And since Christians believe the Bible is God's word, wouldn't it make sence for them to think it's accurate? Not that I actually believe that particular prediction (my Biblical knowledge screams against it)...

Actually with version of the bible you mean? I don't know you, but when a Book has been butchered non stop for centuries, the book is no longer gods word, those are the words that still remain after all the cuts, of course a good chunk of the bible is somewhat accurate, but that doesn't change the fact that the book is far from being flawless (because People butchered a lot of parts or because it was never flawless to begin with) so how can you actually be sure you are reading the truth when any person that knows history will say that we are long pass the 100 version of the bible >_>

The bible does have a lot of historical value but it's pretty much open to interpretation. That's why there are so many religions. In any case there's nothing in the bible that explicitly states that the world's going to end in 2012. One would have to do more than just casually read it to come up with that number. If I remember right there's a passage in the bible that basically says we don't know when it's going to happen so we should just be prepared at all times.

Sorry, don't want to turn this into a discussion about the merits of the bible. believe what you want. I just don't think there's enough evidence scientifically or otherwise for me to believe it's happening in 2012.

Didn't read past page 2 but a simple wiki search reveals this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bible_Code
The author basically claims that there are certain words and phrases that are coded in the Bible and one algorithm of such codes reveals that an astroid will crash into the Earth on 2012. Apparently the book was a best-seller and there is a sequel which is also a best seller.
I say BS on 2012 on the general grounds that I'm skeptical of all conspiracies. It's also a fatalistic conspiracy so I don't even have any interest in it - we can't change anything even if it is true so if 2012 rolls around and the world ends I'm sure that I'll have much greater worries. Or actually not, since I'll be dead.
My friend who IS interested in it told me though, that it wasn't just the Mayans. Some other culture/sect/religion predicted it too a long time ago. Anyone know who this mysterious group is?
EDIT: More Wiki goodness:
December 21 - The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the Maya civilization among others of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to August 11, 3114 BC in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN= 584283).[6] The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Monument 6) that records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed.7 This date figures prominently in the religious syncretism of New Age Mayanism.
2012 is claimed by some with New age beliefs to be a great year of spiritual transformation (or alternatively an apocalypse). There is disagreement among believers as to whether 2012 will see an end of civilization, or humanity will be elevated to a higher level.[14]
Many esoteric sources interpret the completion of the thirteenth B'ak'tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar (which occurs on December 21 by the most widely held correlation) to mean there will be a major change in world order.
Astrologer John Jenkins has asserted that on this date, there will be "an extremely close conjunction of the northern hemisphere winter solstice sun with the crossing point of the Galactic equator and the ecliptic", an event that will not be repeated for thousands of years.
Ain't Wikipedia wonderful?

I don't think the world will end on 2012, the best evidence that supports the 2012 is the WEB SPIDERS that predicted wars involving nuclear ICBMs would be at an all time high in 2012 along with some other unproven theorys.
And I don't support any of THIS...all of this...

FIRST OFF! They never said if it was the end of the world or not! The calendar just ends on 2012, and someone, somewhere, assumed that it meant the end of the world.
And PLEASE believe that the Mayans had scientific basis for their astronomy. They've predicted star patterns for accurately for thousands of years. They were master's at trigonometry, and they used other scientific and mathematical methods that we are still unable to figure out today.
As for predicting today's global issues... Why the hell would they care about that? How much weight does a planet's global issues have in determining when the world will end? That's a pointless argument.

I would love to know why you think it's obvious that they weren't going to live to see their apocalypse? They didn't know they were going to get wiped out. They probably expected to live forever like every other society until said date.
FINAL STATEMENT:
They couldn't even predict that they were going to be wiped out by Spaniards. So why does everyone believe that they can predict when the world is going to end?
For all we know the Mayan calender might've ended on 2012 because that's as far as they got in their calculations before they were wiped out by Diego de Landa.
I agree with you that the world won't end. I simply disagree with your reasons for believing that way.

I don't think the mayan even predicted the world's end, their calendar simply just end there. Perhaps they were saying "hmm our calendar system is advanced enough, ok let's stop here, we can calculate it in few decades again". But then the Spanian came and destroyed them thus no further calculations were made.

I mean srsly, this thread isn't a deep philosophical discussions for everyone to reason. The posts I made are how I expressed my opinion on this issue.
It may not be reasonable and 'questionable', but this is really how I do my postings.

I have absolutely no clue why some people get off on Doomsday Scenarios. It's like people revel in their untimely doom. They know that they're going to die someday, so why not just all die together so that nobody will feel lonely. 🤨
Yes, Mayans were an apt civilization. However they are not Gods. For everything that they've predicted correctly, there's double the amount of predictions that they've got completely wrong. This reminds me of the theory that piramides are actually the result of a highly advanced civilization, and not that of a starting one.
Ever since 2000, there have been prices handed out for the most original Doomsday Scenario of the year. Maybe that explains the recent increase of them. 🤣
Tl;dr? Move on with your life.

Quick thing on the Mayans. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they believed history was a cycle and the end of the world would come multiple times. One of their predicted dates was 2012. Another one was the day the Spaniards landed in America. And that's part of the reason why there's such a big fuss about them, since they did kind of predict the end of their world. I'm not a history major, I might be wrong, but I have heard that in several different places.
