It's sci-fi with some psych stuff going on, (and sort of mecha-at least the monsters look mechish to me) and it's pretty dark, where as I think the op was looking for a light read.

Though for the original poster, you may like any of the manga rec'd in this thread:

My first thought was Tokyo Crazy Paradise-but it may be slightly on the smutty side (like once in all it's chapters-not higher than pg-13). Ranma 1/2 may also work-though sometimes the school stuff gets put to the side (and it really isn't ecchi, regardless of what the info page says). Cardcaptor Sakura's got a great balance of what you're looking for, but it's also very much on the fantasy side (and has shota, loli, yaoi, and yuri-but the G version)
