then Acer will work great for you, stay away from dell, toshiba and HP as they would be for someone planning to use the PC as a Gaming console ^^

I would get a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 Laptop. Somewhat expensive, but trust me, it's worth the money. 🙂 The hardware is just great.

Well, if it's just that, an acer probably would work. Then again, the last Acer laptop I saw only had two USB drives and no firewire, so if you're going to be connecting a lot of stuff like a mouse, external hard drive, printer, etc. you should watch out for that.
Also, if you want a laptop for it's mobility, choose one with either a Centrino or Turion processor. Definitely not a Celeron or Sempron.
On an Acer, the installed operating system will probably be Windows Vista Basic, while on other laptops, it might be Windows Vista Premium. I guess that should be taken into consideration if you intend on using Vista instead of installing your own OS (like downgrade to XP or something), since I've heard that Vista Basic sucks. Well, I think Vista in general sucks...
For the ram, if you're sticking to Vista, you'll probably need at least 1gb, but you'll need 2gb if you want to run large applications smoothly. 1gb should be enough for any other OS.
The hard drive space should be over 100gb because Vista is annoyingly large.
Let me now give you an example of a pretty good deal that I got. For me, it was an HP dv2610ca laptop. The basic stats are 1.9ghz Turion x2, 1gb ram, 160gb hard drive.
It has a built in webcam and mic, which is standard now. It has 3 USB, 1 firewire, bluetooth.
It was about $600~700CAD.
