Oh.. you guys are talking my Dad? Yes, he used to be a Marine. He has spinal injuries and he is a bit messed up in the head. He gets $60 added every year. But when I turn 18, $120 gets deducted. I can't work cause for every dollar I make, it gets subtracted from from his check.

No offense, but so all I need to do is join the army, get shot, then I'm set for life?
None taken, but I'd rather have all my limbs & eyes than all the money in the world.
but say I get shot in the lung and then I become a veteran. No harm done except a weak lung......this is a good deal. Maybe I'll shoot myself.....hmmmmm
You couldn't shoot yourself cause they investigate very thoroughly. And unless you were the only one to survive an attack, there need to be a witness.

VA is veteran's association. His father is a war veteran. He doesn't work because he was probably wounded in action. A friend of mine is in the same boat with 100% disability... he got hit by an IED in Iraq.
Also for you people who don't understand: IED = Improvised Explosive Device. Such as mines or roadside bombs.

err.. uh, yeh I'll buy manga of a series that I really enjoy IF the effort is made with the english publication of it.. there's a bunch of manga out there that I enjoy reading the scanlations and would like to buy, but won't waste my money on simply because the official paperbacks have stupid errors or terrible translations
As it is, I find the majority of official manga translations worse to read than the scanlations or even the anime adaptation trans (usually coz they decide to get "creative" with dialogue for mass market I guess.. unfortunately most people's idea of creative = cheesy and eye-rolling).. but you can shake your head and live with it up to a certain point

Yeah I'm in the same boat as well, the one about not buying manga because of it being edited and censored and stuff. One thing that is really noticable besides the censorship and horrible translation and sometimes quality is that most scanlators put little asterisks and explanations on the pages that need them but if you buy manga, explanations for words and very rarely, puns and jokes that haven't been editted to something totally stupid and out of context are in the back of the book, requiring me to flip all the way to the back and look for whatever I'm trying to understand.
Which brings me to a point I've always wanted to discuss, I guess it's kind of related but kind of offtopic...but how come the online manga community has never tried to start their own like their own company? Sorry I'm not very knowledgable about this stuff and I know it costs alot of money but to start a company one only needs a license right? and the money to buy the licenses/copyright to the mangas and stuff....and the online community is pretty widespread so I'm sure we can find someone who knows someone who can help print/bind and someone else who can distribute right? I dunno? 😕

Just to get started with some kind of company publishing English translations of Japanese manga, you need someone who'd be able to negotiate legal contracts in Japanese, plus the kind of money and connections that would make the Japanese publishing companies take you seriously. Much as I love and resepect scanlation groups, I don't think that'd be too easy to find.
Assuming people would edit & translate for free and/or a share of the profits later on, you'd still need enough money to print the books up, and some method of distribution to get them out to enough places that they'd sell well enough to actually bring in money. Of course you can sell online, but then you'd need space to store them and someone to fill customer orders. People can only do so much on a volunteer or share-of-the-eventual-profits basis, and if many people are buying your books, you'll need people who can spend quite a bit of time on the business for quite a while BEFORE any real money starts coming in.
Of course while you're trying to do all this, you'll still have to fulfill all the terms of whatever contract you signed with the Japanese publishers. "Publication will be delayed two months due to our main translator being busy with finals" is not likely to go over too well!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's impossible, just that it would be difficult, time consuming, and expensive.
"[English] not only borrows words from other languages; it has on occasion chased other languages down dark alley-ways, clubbed them unconscious and rifled their pockets for new vocabulary."

Hahaha -.- yeah that happens alot...main translator or main editor or scanner being too busy due to finals or some personal happenstance.

I used to buy manga before I discovered the wonders of scanlations. I have over 50 books I think. There's some manga I'm thinking of buying, because no one is scanlating them, they're licensed, and/or I can't find them online anywhere. Manga is so expensive though! >:-(
Ever tried Evil Empire? That site got almost every thing.
SHHHH!!!!! Don't let THEM hear you say that! They are everywhere!!!!

Are you saying I like bad manga? lol j/k Some of my favorite mangas aren't very popular though. hmmm... anyway, I found ororon and read the first two chapters.
Well you can't blame the groups..after all they are doing it for free........A lot of the manga I like are only released once every 5 month. How do you think I feel? Very Very Very Very angry.

And actually I wouldn't have a lot of trouble to name a couple of dozen of very mediocre mangas that are beeing scanlated...
So no popularity =/= quality (IMO)
