What kind of characters do you love and what kind of characters do you hate?

- Guys:
I usually like tall, dark, taciturn fellows. In shoujo manga I like reading about love interests with intentions that are not always shown. They are not able to express their feelings, but in return they are nurturing and thoughtful of other people. However, I find it's cute if once in a while they can show that they really love their significant other, preferably in the sack 😉
In shounen and seinen I like the invincible type of guy. The one who is NEVER beaten, and they don't make efforts to hide their power, but only use it in self-defence. They are not cocky. They are just people.
- Guys
Sucky guys in harem manga that get shoved around by big breasted women. I'm a girl and want to see him punch them o.o so I stay away from harem like the plague.
Lazy guys, guys with no ambition, guys who don't learn their lesson, guys who make no sense with their purpose because it contradicts their actions.
- Girls
If I had to give an example it would have to be the heroine from Beauty is the Beast. Loves food, humorous, not too over-the-top, likes to chill, and just... really adorable xD but not in the annoying way.
I like introverted girls. That is different from being shy. They are confident with who they are, but don't need everyone to know. They are comfortable with their current condition, and somehow attracts different types of people.
I like girls who are modestly dressed, but can really rock it out at the right times.
- Girls
Huge breasts, dumb at school, contemporary tsundere, overly naive, too cute you want to throw up.
Girls that blame their situation on other people when it's clearly their fault (also applies to males).
Bullies (I'm looking at you shoujo o.o) that's just too petty for me.

Could yo give an example? I'd like to read something with a main character like that.

I LOVE all the characters from Yotsubato!. So I guess you can say I like characters with originality. I dislike typical shoujo heroines and their typical male leads. I also hate the shounen harem hero. Oh and you can never go wrong with badass characters that don't give a flying shit. Love those mofos

I like:
-males with mental disorders
-sadistic males
-male tsunderes
-male characters who seem to be always happy and friendly but who are actually really twisted, crazy, coldblooded or broken etc.
-narcissistic, selfish, antisocial male characters
-very smart male characters
-strong female characters who just do what they want and don't care what others think about them
-very smart women
-female characters who have a quick tongue
-females who don't need to be protected but can fight for themselves
-confident female characters
-female versions of Barney Stinson 😀
-deep characters who are not what they seem
I dislike:
-weak characters
-crybabies
-dumb and/or very naive characters
-pure/innocent characters
-very tall, muscular or manly characters
-overly shy characters
-the typical seme/uke stereotypes (especially the seme stereotypes)

I don't hate any character type, because almost all of the types can be pulled off realistically if the author takes enough time to develop them.
As for the characters I usually love no matter what (because I'm awfully biased):
- The quiet, stoic, severely damaged ones
- The slowly dying ones (especially if combined with the above)
- The absolutely, irrevocably insane ones who somehow end up being twistedly adorable
- The quirky eccentric (artist, genius, whatever)
And the characters I usually hate (because I am awful, and also biased)
- The stereotypical shounen hero
- The self-pitying whiner (often combined with the above with horrendous results)
- The stereotypical shoujo female lead
- The stereotypical shoujo male lead
- The stereotypical everything (excluding the types on the first list; I like those)
Basically, I love characters (in any genre, for any demographic) who are interesting, unpredictable, multi-dimensional, complex, and intriguing. I love authors whose characters are strong enough to carry what would otherwise be a dry plot and infuse it with breath and life because of their intensity of character. (That's what a good story is for me.)
Some series that do very well with their characters:
- Golden Days
- Eternal Sabbath
- The Climber
- Natsume Yuujinchou
- (tons of others)
Some series with wonderfully damaged/insane characters:
- The Embalmer
- Banana Fish
- Issho ni Neyou yo
- Himitsu (And everything else by Shimizu Reiko)
- 7 Seeds (And everything else by Tamura Yumi)
- (tons of others)
I love how I'm rambling like a fool on this site instead of writing papers.

Lately I like sensitive and shy characters, like the new guy in Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji
or the hypnotizing guy in Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
But it's weird, because I don't like this character type in anime.
As far as female leads go, I like the happy-go-lucky ones like Ai from Himitsu no Ai-chan
or Chihaya from Chihayafuru
or Futaba from Ao Haru Ride
or Hinata from Usotsuki Lily

For both genders I like the calculating ones that seem like they're holding all the cards and plannig many moves ahead like Akiyama in Liar Game.
For what I read the most though, I like bloodthirsty female characters who love fighting (Like in Teppu). And for male characters, secretive ones that you have to really figure out before you can decide if you hate them or love them. Not the shoujo kind of secretive guy though, I hate the whole "oh he's so dark he must be a delinquent, but what is he really hiding?!" bit. The shounen counterpart of this type is much more appealing.

Teppu was very interesting for me. Not only was her character not wishy-washy shoujo ick, about as far from it as possible, fun, and... Get this... The style of MMA they used had moves that I recognize from my martial arts class. I just started reading it, and I got to the roof fight, and I saw the 'pin move' from mount into an arm bar and I thought, 'holy cow. That's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I take that! I know what that move is!' Lol. Just thought that was interesting. 😛

When I said 'death' before 'dishonor', I meant alphabetically.
