Fresh out of college, Kumiko "Yankumi" Yamaguchi becomes a math teacher at an all-boys high school. Unfortunately for her, she's assigned by the school board as the homeroom teacher for class 2-D, which happens to be the class of delinquent students. When the class attempts to make a living hell out of Yankumi's career, they fail as her persistence and aggression gain their respect. However, little does anyone in the school know that Yankumi is actually heir to the Kuroda Group - one of Tokyo's most powerful yakuza clans.

When it comes to mangas, i check how the art is, if its attractive enough, ill go on reading. The art wasnt really my type, it seems that Shin Sawada was the only one shining. And maybe also the lawyer, Shinohara. But after many praises about the manga series, I couldnt help but pick it up and it was AWESOME. Maybe most of the characters arent good looking or beautiful but their attitude makes up for it. wink and you'd understand why it was drawn that way.

I really love Yankumi, there are times when shes really clueless but most of the time she could be smart of course, but when she's clueless at times, Shin pops in the picture, and for awhile you'd forget shes the teacher. HAHA!

I love Yankumi and Shin, once the story started. I felt something was gonna go on between the two. I dont know why, but it was a hunch.. and I was right! He may have lack of facial expression but his actions really show everything that his facial expression is lacking.

The jdorama, I know many ppl loved it. But honestly, i couldnt bring myself to like it. It was just soo different. I know they have to alter a lot of things to make the live action work.. But to change that much was out of my expectations, probably if you had watched the live action series first, you wouldnt mind. Probably only.. I rather stick to the manga and the specials. Btw read the specials, they show Shin and Yankumi's relationship. wink hope there are more.

This series is great. One of the best teacher series. It has a good style. The teacher is a fun character.

My only complaint is the one of the male characters. He... is disgusting jail bait for ladies. An effeminate, doesn't have to be here, genius, who's rich. His personality isn't totally bland, just mostly. Sometimes he makes a good straight man to the crazier things going on with a startled looked. But he's so bland I'm surprised they even give him such human reactions.

It's inapropriate, especially in a series that looks better than that, that acts better than that, who has a character that is better than that. That one aspect makes me dread the end, but it's also a haunting spectre that gives you a bad feeling while you're trying to enjoy it.

This series is EPIC ... I read it continuously for two days - and I laughed hard ... REALLY hard for those two days too. This manga is indescribably awesome, and the art grows on you. Actually the art fits Gokusen perfectly and the pace is good and engrossing.

Normally I would prefer more bishounens and a straightforward romance, but Gokusen just drew me in and completely made me forget my usual manga preferences. The faces of the characters are SO funny at times, and Sawada is a great contrast to these with his stone face. And Kumiko ... rocks! I ADORE when she makes her 'HAAAAA?'-face at people irritating her.

The only time I was a bit annoyed was when Fuji (spelled like this?), the yakuza dog, dragged Sawada on random side track adventures... Kinda irritating having to leave the main story like that. Lol. It was SO random... And actually, it was funny anyways.

Gokusen deserves 10 / 10. It totally took me by surprise. And now I am C R A V I N G for the last releases of volume 15. Please, someone; scanlate the last chapters so that I can depart peacefully. Ehehehe! Edit: The last chapter = haaaaah? Could have been better.

Note: The best chapter was the one about the Kamiyami festival. HAHAHAHA!

you may or may not like this series as they are pretty much different.
Gokusen is funny, well-developed and it has nicely done Characters you can like or hate and watch how they change. Yankumi's wierd idoicy, Yakuza family and her crashes makes this manga funny, interesting and moving.

what i like most about this manga is that it has character based plots.

read it if you want

This manga is one of my all-time favorites. If my friend hadn't recommended it, I never would have even tried to read this because the artwork looked so bad. However, as you read on you really get used to it, and I even started to prefer it to some sparkly-eyed shojo heroines. The plot is so funny and the chemistry between yankumi and shin is excellent! Definitely a must read! Plus, anyone who starts it now won't have to wait in agony for new chapters because it's complete smile

At first, the art is hard to look at, but you won't care because you'll be shaking with laughter. After awhile, the art gets marginally better, and you stop noticing any faults in it because the characters are so developed, unique, and likeable. Oh, and you'll still be shaking with laughter.

For being so long, this series really keeps the pace up without feeling repetitious or as though it's trying to stretch itself out and getting pulled thin. Yankumi, is a great, strong female character. She doesn't just melt down when convenient for the plotline, nor is she completely without flaw. She has developed, understandable weaknesses just as her strength is complex and it's source illuminated.

The only regrettable thing is Shin's lack of facial expression. He's so stoic! Though sometimes this becomes a great (unintended?) comic effect.

I highly, highly recommend Gokusen. Lively plot, spiced with action, a little awkward romance, totally funny.

Yes, i see why people compare it with GTO. The protagonist are both not-ordinary teachers, they're good at martial arts, the students are having complex problems; but in my opinion i like Gokusen better than GTO. The art is not very good but i kinda like it after some chapters... And this is definitely not another GTO, it has some similarities but it's Gokusen ! smile

I love the fact that this manga doesn't focus on romance, and that the heroine so well-grounded and funny. The art work improved over time, which was more than I could ask for, so that was also a plus. It's also freaking hilarious XD. I haven't laughed this hard at a manga in years.

Yamaguchi is a thoughtful, dedicated (though sometimes a bit dense) teacher who wants nothing but the best for her students. Though she tends to act rather silly and is a bit dense, she's actually a very good teacher (i.e. beyond academics).

One of the most notable things about this manga is that, all comedy aside, Yamaguchi learns just as much from her students as she teaches them. The mangaka was pretty clever for doing that.

This is, by far, one of the best series' that I've ever read. I don't care what anyone says.

What a great enjoyable, HILARIOUS read. It's the kind of manga that just seems to be addicting without trying. Kudos to the mangaka's mad skills.

Can't say who I love the most: the kickass awesome Yankumi, her weird family, weirder people at her school, ADORABLE Shin, or even the creepy pervy-looking dog. xD

I've seen the drama and the manga is a million times better (I think so). Nowhere near as cheesy and slow-paced as the drama. Plus like a lot of people have said, you get to learn a lot of fascinating stuff about yakuzas here.

So yeah, Gokusen's hands-down funny, just so entertaining and refreshingly different from most mangas out there. I tried to read GTO, which is supposed to be similar, but that was nothing next to Gokusen. I re-read it a bunch of times and I never get bored (or can stop laughing). Very few mangas out there can be 15 volumes long and yet keep your interest and ethusiasm.

I would say that after reading the manga (rather than after watching the jdorama itself), I was so interested in the life of yakuzas. Anyhow, I think the jdorama's 3rd installment would have been better if they've stick to the original manga plot since the manga's over.

In the manga, the story revolved around Yankumi and Shin. It would have been romantic. Hahah. The jdorama was funny and has conveyed enough advices regarding how students must live their life but nonetheless, it would been a lot better if the jdorama's plot was about Shin and Yankumi's yakuza life. biggrin
