Fresh out of college, Kumiko "Yankumi" Yamaguchi becomes a math teacher at an all-boys high school. Unfortunately for her, she's assigned by the school board as the homeroom teacher for class 2-D, which happens to be the class of delinquent students. When the class attempts to make a living hell out of Yankumi's career, they fail as her persistence and aggression gain their respect. However, little does anyone in the school know that Yankumi is actually heir to the Kuroda Group - one of Tokyo's most powerful yakuza clans.

Okay, I'll admit it... I started reading this manga because the heroine looks like me. (Short, nerdy, snub-nosed.) But I kept reading it because of the wonderful characters, and the tenderness with which even the most mean bullies are characterized. Everyone's a human in this manga; the side characters are treated with as much respect as the main ones.

Not to mention the fact that Kumiko's just oodles of fun. She has a stubborn personality and the ability to take down several bad guys with one punch. The realism of such a thing aside, the manga pokes light-hearted fun at several shoujo stereotypes, such as the stereotype of the bishounen.

I'm sure you'll enjoy this series, no matter what your tastes are. Give it a try!

If you're looking for something comical, yet with a hint of romance, and great storyline, Gokusen's for you!

I advise watching the live action drama first (I mean with Yukie as Yankumi, and Jun as Shin, who can resist? Btw, I feel Jun acted better here than in HYD, and looks better as well), then after capturing your interest, go on to the manga! =) Just catching season 1 is fine (season 2 is a complete spin-off).

The manga has the best storyline of the three, but the live action drama's good in its own way as well, so do both! Anime's good, but it's just way too short, IMO!

Not GTO. Not a bad manga either. More serious and so, but with it`s jokes and stuff. Other style, in the end. It´s a Manga I recommend for everyone.

Since i wrote that i dissliked GTO for so many reasons but love the Live action i just have to say ITS THE SAME THING HERE
well not really
i like the art alot better in Gokusen than GTO
the jokes in gokusen r more ...grown up...
sex jokes on everypage like in gto gets a bit boring after sometime since its so much...
so the comedy is better in gokusen i say
but the real reason why i love gokusen is the live action
Nakama Yukie who play Yankumi is t3h pretty
and well one of the best jdrama since gto...
so go watch the live action and be happy that this manga
could produce something so good

i cant help comparing gto and gokusen...

Gokusen is a awesome manga. Though I did not like the art at first, it did kind of grew on me as I continue reading it. The storyline is interesting and the plot kept me reading. I highly recommend Gokusen to anyone who is looking for some action and a little bit of a romance ^_^

I love this manga so much!! I mean who wouldn't?? especialy when there's a cool teacher like Yankumi and such a hot student like Sawada Shin...hehehe. Although I am acting like a typical fangirl, this isn't a romance manga...its more into action, yakuza/gang fights, comedy and such...many would say it's the female version of GTO. The art is unique and I love how it has the old school feel to it. This manga is definately worth looking. Highly recommend it to everyone!
