New Poll - Pursuing Romance

This week's poll is from FormX, who apparently took it from EveTaku... But in any case, of the choices given, which would you rather see the main character of a romance series pursue? Not an exhaustive list and some of the choices sort of overlap, but oh well. Just for fun!

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: How much time per week do you spend on manga and anime related activities (reading, watching, discussing, cosplay, fan fics, drawing, conventions, etc)?
Choices:
Less than 2 hours - votes: 904 (7.9%)
2-5 hours - votes: 1936 (16.9%)
5-10 hours - votes: 1939 (16.9%)
10-20 hours - votes: 2140 (18.7%)
20-30 hours - votes: 1435 (12.5%)
30-40 hours - votes: 899 (7.9%)
40+ hours - votes: 2188 (19.1%)
There were 11441 total votes.
The poll ended: January 18th 2014

Maybe I should have split the upper tier even more. My initial reasoning was because 40 hours is the typical work week for many people. I guess you would spend more time with a hobby than a job. Or perhaps all those people don't have jobs or are students...

New Poll - Time Spent

This week's poll was suggested by our member Tripitaka. On average how much time per week do you spend doing stuff like reading manga, watching anime, using MangaUpdates, discussing on forums about manga, making cosplay, attending conventions, etc? Up to you in what you consider a manga-related or anime-related activity. Even administering this site takes some time...

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results
Question: Opinion of sexual fan service when the series is not even supposed to be ecchi
Choices:
I only read ecchi - votes: 335 (2.4%)
Bonus! Yeah! - votes: 3938 (28%)
Doesn't matter - votes: 4937 (35%)
Don't like it at all - votes: 4231 (30%)
Have never encountered this - votes: 646 (4.6%)
There were 14087 total votes.
The poll ended: January 11th 2014

Look at the curves of that bell!

New Poll - Fan Service

This week's poll is from our member arrha. If the series isn't supposed to be ecchi, what do you feel about any fan service that randomly shows up? Is it just weird and distracting? Or you think it's just a cherry on top? Examples of such things could be a panty shot, a beach/hot spring setting that doesn't seem to serve much point, appearing topless suddenly, pants falling off, a random shower scene, etc.

New Group Policy

Due to [sitelink=news.html?id=44023]some[/sitelink] [sitelink=news.html?id=44042]recent[/sitelink] [sitelink=news.html?id=44069]developments[/sitelink], we have decided to slightly change our scanlator group policy. As usual, for a scanlator group to be approved on MangaUpdates, you must have at least one of the following:

  • Website
  • IRC channel
  • Forum
  • Twitter feed
  • Facebook page

The change is that you may now provide a Batoto group link in lieu of a website (so put it in the website field). An example of such a link for AquaStar Fansubs is here: http://www.batoto.net/group/_/a/aquastar-fansubs-r111.

Please note that due to the developments linked above, this Batoto link will not be visible to the public. It is for our purposes so that we can easily verify the legitimacy of a release.

PS: If you are backlogging release entries for groups that were previously not allowed, please provide the actual date of release.

New Poll - Year 2013

It's almost the end of the year, so might as well do this kind of poll (as suggested by our member Ching27). How was the last year for you?

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Do you still use IRC?
Choices:
Always! - votes: 722 (5.6%)
Only sometimes - votes: 914 (7.1%)
Only to download stuff - votes: 1874 (14.6%)
Used to, but not anymore. It's dying - votes: 2152 (16.8%)
Have never used IRC before - votes: 2693 (21%)
What is IRC? - votes: 4463 (34.8%)
There were 12818 total votes.
The poll ended: December 28th 2013

Hmm, results are still pretty similar as 2 years ago. I guess IRC isn't dying as fast as we thought, eh?

Happy Holidays!

Happy holidays, and a happy new year from everyone on the MU team! Hasn't been a particularly good year, especially with what happened recently, but let's keep it up with another one!

New Poll - IRC Usage

Our member rincewind1990 suggested that we do an IRC poll again. It's been almost exactly 2 years since the last one (with 30.6% not even knowing what IRC is). So 2 years later, how has it declined? For me personally, I almost never log in anymore...

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Main web browser
Choices:
Internet Explorer 7 - votes: 144 (0.7%)
Internet Explorer 8 - votes: 98 (0.5%)
Internet Explorer 9 - votes: 51 (0.3%)
Internet Explorer 10 - votes: 68 (0.3%)
Internet Explorer 11 - votes: 274 (1.4%)
Mozilla Firefox - votes: 10009 (50.1%)
Google Chrome - votes: 7825 (39.1%)
Safari - votes: 635 (3.2%)
Opera - votes: 730 (3.7%)
Other - votes: 158 (0.8%)
There were 19992 total votes.
The poll ended: December 21st 2013

If we ever do this poll again, I'll combine all the IE choices together. Interestingly enough, all the IE votes equal all the Safari votes. And Opera unexpectedly beats both of them, which really surprises me because no one I know uses Opera.

I'm curious about Safari. Does that mean that most of our users don't use Macs? Or does it mean that the Mac users don't use Safari?

New Poll - Web Browser

If you've been a long time user, you'll realize that this is the third time we've done this poll. No matter! It's been almost 4 years since the last iteration (and also 3 new versions of IE). You know the drill. Back in 2010, it was Firefox that won with a massive 66.9%. How much popularity has Chrome gained?

Apparently it's not hard to scanlate shounen-ai and yaoi.

English Scanlators Only

To all those people getting submitting non-English scanlators as groups, please stop. We are an English website and only accept English scanlation groups. I'm getting tired of rejecting your submissions over and over (and recently there's been more attempts, hence this news post).

The only exception is if you also do English releases. But if I take a quick glance at your submitted website and can't find any English there, I'm just gonna reject your group.

PS: The funny thing is that I hope these non-English scanlators can read English, otherwise this news post serves no purpose to its intended audience.

New Poll - Hardest to Scanlate

If you haven't yet, please read the previous 3 news posts.
[sitelink=news.html?id=44023]Group Links Removed[/sitelink]
[sitelink=news.html?id=44042]Group Links Update[/sitelink]
[sitelink=news.html?id=44069]Group Links Update 2[/sitelink]

Now to the poll. This week's is from CatzCradle, and it's quite an odd one. In your opinion, which demographic is hardest to scanlate? Feel free to give any reason you want (whether you gotta look at naked people for hentai or you're so ashamed at how stupid some characters are in shounen. Maybe you think the language in seinen is harder to translate? Not that many of us would actually have scanlation experience in all of these demographics...

Now that I think of it, Mahou Sensei Negima! (shounen) was surprisingly hard to scanlate. It tends to have a bunch of text for 18 pages a chapter, so more to read for a proofreader and a translator. If you wanted to be accurate, you had to cross-reference the spells to non-Japanese languages. It took a bunch of work from the editors since there's a lot of redrawing if you wanna do it well. And all the above makes it hard to QC since there's so many things you need to watch out for.

Nothing of the sort - votes: 3337 (28.3%)

There was too much discussion on where you lump yaoi, yuri, and smut in those choices...
