New Poll - Hayao Miyazaki
This cute poll was suggested by our member sheniccar. No explanation necessary for this one. Ironically, I watched Nausicaa yesterday night...

You can discuss this poll on our forums here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=20683

You can submit poll ideas here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Have you played a visual novel before?
Choices:
Yes, and I love them! - votes: 2942 (22.1%)
Yes, just to try them out - votes: 2197 (16.5%)
No - votes: 3416 (25.7%)
What's a visual novel? - votes: 4760 (35.7%)
There were 13315 total votes.
The poll ended: August 28th 2010

Well, it's pretty understanding that a lot of people don't even know what a visual novel is...but hopefully they do know now? And apparently lots of people have at least tried them out before! (And more people like it than not)

Heheh, I just saw Spirited Away last week for the I don't know how many times lol. Have to be my fav there ^^
Though I really like My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Castle in the Sky too :] I love Hayao Miyazaki films, I need to have a marathon before I start school again biggrin

I love them all! I wish I had enough money to have a Miyazaki collection. I'm obssessed!

thread

» ArtsEnticingOrdeal on August 28th, 2010, 9:05am

Wow. I thought I was gonna be in a much smaller minority who has never watched Hayao Miyazaki works (nor do I care to very much, for that matter), but so far it seems there's actually quite a number of people...

» forror on August 28th, 2010, 9:05am

Has to be Spirited Away! (but my vote for favourite Ghibli probably goes to Grave of the Fireflies...)

thread

» yuno19 on August 28th, 2010, 9:57am

grave of fireflies is great indeed. but the atmosphere is pretty heavy, plus, not much of fantasy there unlike most ghibli movies. well, hotaru no haka wasn't made by hayao miyazaki, was it?

thread

» forror on August 29th, 2010, 4:18am

yep, it was made by isao takahata... it's probably the only work of his that i've enjoyed so far. miyazaki tends to have a feel good mood that accompanies his movies, whereas isao's is more geared towards realism. i dunno, i think i'm just a sucker for tears...

This should be a check box-not a radio button poll because i love most of Miyazaki films

thread

» yuno19 on August 28th, 2010, 9:53am

the target audience for mononoke hime might be a bit older so that it suit me better. mononoke rules!!

thread

» The Guy on August 28th, 2010, 9:55am

Pretty simple answer, Spirited Away.
Since that is the only one I ever saw, once. A long long time ago, in a time when there were still video tapes.

thread

» uNpreDicTed on August 28th, 2010, 5:45pm

2001 isn't that long ago...

thread

» ayashe on August 28th, 2010, 10:03am

Ponyo. That was easy, I his films are okay, but I think he's generally overrated. They're definitely not masterpieces.

thread

» uNpreDicTed on August 28th, 2010, 5:44pm

Have you agree with you there. Funny enough I do think Hotaru no Haka is a masterpiece, which according to wikipedia, was outshined by most Miyazaki movies until recently.

thread

» Nirhtuc on August 28th, 2010, 6:18pm

I have seen half of the Miyazaki films listed in the poll, and I have to disagree about Miyazaki being overrated- I personally haven't seen animated films that are of better quality all-round (i.e. Disney films are lovely visually and story-wise, but do not offer very much besides these- the moral messages are pretty much the same for every Disney movie).

It's great that Hayao Miyazaki has a poll!

thread

» eehreum on August 28th, 2010, 12:39pm

are kids on the internet getting younger? why is spirited away higher than totoro and mononoke? maybe theyve never seen them or the movies are too old?
i think some more information is needed because this guy above is talking about how spirited away was ancient... it was made in 2001...and came out way later in the states and europe...wtf dvds were out for a long time before that.
something tells me that this poll is fishy. need an extra question "click this one if spirited away is the only movie you watched cuz the rest are too old for you"

thread

» Synthoxide on August 28th, 2010, 3:10pm

I've seen Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Kiki's Delivery Service. Spirited Away is still my favorite. (:

thread

» forror on August 29th, 2010, 4:09am

hmm, i've seen all the miyazaki movies (apart from ponyo) but my vote still goes to spirited away...

thread

» gohan11 on August 28th, 2010, 2:02pm

"Whisper of the Heart" is my favorite, but it's not there so I went with my 2nd... Laputa

thread

» gohan11 on August 28th, 2010, 2:04pm

Didn't even notice that it was Miyazaki films and not Ghibli

thread

» xblkdragonx on August 28th, 2010, 2:15pm

Those two are my top favorites too! Though I think Laputa is my favorite over 'Whisper of the Heart'

A few Miyazaki movies that I saw that aren't up here are "Only Yesterday" and "The Cat Returns"

thread

» moonfaerie24 on August 28th, 2010, 3:13pm

Those are studio ghibli, but they aren't miyazaki

thread

» dosky on August 28th, 2010, 5:00pm

Lol didn't know that Castle of Cagliostro was made by Miyazaki bigrazz
Great film indeed.
Voted for Nausicaa smile

thread

» yuno19 on August 28th, 2010, 10:49pm

isn't nausicaa the movie is much shallower than the manga? well, its your vote.

thread

» Anthop on August 30th, 2010, 2:18pm

Yeah, would've definitely voted for Nausicaa if it was the manga.... Ah well, maybe sometime Ghibli will take it upon them selves to make a trilogy of three-hour-long movies to properly do Nausicaa, a-la-Lord-of-the-Rings bigrazz. I can dream, right?

thread

» Pikapu on August 29th, 2010, 11:22am

I've only seen a few, not including Spirited Away... but Totoro's my favorite. Gotta love that big hunka fur!!!! :]

thread

» Ferozban on August 29th, 2010, 3:21pm

Mononoke Hime gets too little love here?
does the MU community not watch the old classics?

thread

» mattai on August 30th, 2010, 11:39am

I voted for it! Well, I'm somewhat embarassed to say it's the only one on the list that I've seen.

thread

» revilenigma on August 30th, 2010, 3:26pm

voted for it too 8)

thread

» Anthop on August 30th, 2010, 2:16pm

Okay, who are these 13.8% (at time of writing) of people who haven't seen a single Miyazaki film?!?

I DEMAND NAMES!!!!!

thread

» Chibiheaven on August 31st, 2010, 12:31am

Spirited Away !
I've loved the story since I was young. (:
Loved the comic/manga too ~

thread

» barbapapa on August 31st, 2010, 5:30am

People that vote for Spirited Away and Howl haven't really seen anything else by Miyazaki.

thread

» shinshuu on August 31st, 2010, 8:17pm

Not really, I've seen almost all of Studio Ghibli movie after 1990, even those of his son like Eathea. Though I have to said Howl floating castle was awesome, it really refreshing, as well the magic really does touches people heart, or at least mine and remind us of our innocence. Spirited Away work in the same way. but may vote goes to the howl's castle, that mechanism is awesome.

thread

» hahhah42 on August 31st, 2010, 11:31pm

I wouldn't argue that point regarding Howl, but for Spirited Away I can understand the vote - particularly if it were the first Miyazaki film the person saw (the nostalgia factor seems to come into play faster these days). Personally, my vote went to Laputa - although I'd like to see higher numbers for Porco Rosso and Totoro, as well. I'm not surprised at the lack of love for Porco, but Totoro's number seems shockingly low.

thread

» empathy on August 31st, 2010, 6:46am

Voted "never watched" although I have watched a few of his films, I just don't like his style at all.

thread

» harmonize on September 1st, 2010, 9:28am

I love Laputa the most, follow by Nausicaa & Totoro :x

thread

» maxcrazy7 on September 1st, 2010, 5:57pm

I've seen them all except for Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, being a fan of the original Lupin I can't stand the third.

thread

» Carne on September 2nd, 2010, 8:11pm

Was this poll made because of Miyazaki's apparent ragequit?
I don't remember where I read it, but it seems he will close shop if his next film doesn't do well in America.

thread

» lambchopsil on September 2nd, 2010, 11:28pm

No clue what you're talking about

thread

» mattai on September 3rd, 2010, 12:59am

Why would he care that much how well his film does in America? I'm skeptical of this piece of information
