Horror themed, episodic mystery adventure series
by jahu

This is one of my all time favorite series. The format just clicked with me. You have a set cast, that gets into a new adventure in almost every chapter. Those adventures are loosely connected and at times out of order. There is an overlaying plot, but it takes very small portion of the series overall. It is also full of pop-culture references, be it movies, games or whatnot.

The cast consist of monster girls and one immortal human boy, but don't expect any romance or even harem-ness. The central character is the princess and male lead is just her meat shield. All the romance amounts to is occasional ship-tease with no actual consequences (maybe the author tried to inspire a doujin?). Later on author is more into ship-teasing female cast members with each other, rather than with male lead.

The format, art and characters evolve over the first few volumes and when the author finally found what he wanted, he stuck with it. If by say, the end of volume 5 you still don't like the series, you'll probably never going to like it, but if you just read the first few chapters and didn't like them it might be still worth reading a few more.

Is it worth reading sure would I ever read it again nope. Very repetitive and quite disconnected in a lot of places though I did appreciate the attempt to connect some of the unexplained and seemingly irrelevant parts to the main story.
As far as the romance goes
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Non nota zip zero nothing for me it comes across as unyielding respect for your queen then affection in a romantic sense, personally I get more of a romantic feeling from Reiri and Riza just (just throwing it out there :p). I really think that the romance genre tag should be removed.

Not good.

It's episodic. Rarely has multi-chapter arcs. Absolute majority of stories range from mediocre to crap. Some are good. Really good ones are very rare. Not worth reading 20 volumes for.
The MC is a wimp but, usually, he is not the main focus. There is a harem setup but no romance whatsoever.
I finished it hoping for more good stories and the plot setup halfway through looked decent. But the plot ends so underwhelmingly that it's rage-worthy.
No reason to read 20 volumes. If you want something better read xxxHolic for mellow and Japanese folklore focused theme, Franken Fran if you want weird, funny and kinda disgusting stuff, or Rosario to Vampire if you want shonen harem stuff with actual development.

R.E.P.E.T.I.T.I.V.E. should've been the title for this.

While the premise is good, I wouldn't call this a masterpiece...and I stopped reading after 2 or 3 volumes because it was going nowhere.

Not bad but as others say, chapters are just too disconnected, way too often stories are left unfinished starting with things complete unrelated on the next chapter which really ruins the plot continuity aspect and the build up of the characters, at times you don't even know if the opponents were defeated or died or if they had to escape even, of at cases the story just continues a few volumes later then cuts again and continues later again, it's like an anime waiting for the manga to progress throwing in fillers. Also, almost all event are self-contained within a chapter instead of spanning through several of them so there is really little of building the plot events which leads to them feeling detached making it harder to get to care about what's happening.
In short, I somewhat liked the story and the chars are ok, thou Hime is a great char from the start but the way the story is told is really lacking and the same goes for the ending, only about half of the issues presented on the series are solved.

well constructed and executed story

i think this is one of the best shounen out there. the mangaka can, if he want, drawn this out as much as possible because the possibility of hijinks of a princess of monsters is boundless, but he chose not to do so but stick to his plot. i must say at first some part are just mind boggling and weird to me, because this manga have several dimensions, time lines, multiple universes and such, and you, the reader, might not even notice it, but at the end of the story everything work out perfectly. this just show the thoroughness of the mangaka, and a second reading might even more enjoyable as you can notice various hints and clues scattered through the stories.

there are various characters in this story, but i must say none of their personality stand out or endear to me, thus I'm not emotionally invested to whatever happen to them. however, all of them have their own roles in the story, none of them are dead weight thus i'm happy that they execute their jobs perfectly. that is to say, to me the plot carry the manga, not the characters.

the art is not blindingly beautiful that you want to stare at it, i think none of the character have much memorable character design. the princess have very ordinary design, the ordinary blonde hair and goth dress of a princess of darkness. but they are pleasing, and perfect for the story.

this manga don't have unnecessary fanservice. there are some obligatory panty-shots, but the author seems to tacked on it because his editor told him so.

all in all, there are still oodles of mysteries still in this manga, for example what kind of vampire is rurie, what bridge is the spider god building, what will happen to the alien inside the glasses guy head, etc, etc. the world the mangaka had built are ripe for sequels, prequels - i hope the spin off can sate some of the hunger.

This is one amusing manga. I love the suspense and action throughout. This manga needs better ratings. Its unique characters and vexing plot-twists are some of the most wonderful characteristics of this story.

If you're put off by the main character...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
don't worry, it gets better eventually.

Otherwise, I mainly enjoy the characters and the clever interaction. It's intriguing enough to make it worth continuing and it's an easy read. I won't give this a 9 or 10, because there isn't any value aside from entertainment I get out of it, but it's very enjoyable.

"Often chapters don't seem to connect, or there are strange gaps in the story... or story threads are created only to fade away by the next chapter..."

True. But then came the explanation... everything thrown into light. All the chapter suddenly make sense, truly a magnificent manga to read if you have a liking toward twisted story. Hopefully it won't end badly.
