There once was an ayakashi called Karma who challenged his victims to a battle of wits. If the subject succeeded, the ayakashi would grant them one wish, but if they lost, he would devour their soul. The oneshot was good...amusing, witty, and slightly stupid all at once. But the manga...I've read up to chapter 10, and maybe it's been cause I've been reading in breaks (about 10-30 mins; I'm supposed to be doing something else XD) it gets boring and the plot starts 'falling apart'. It's still as amusing and stupid, but it gets rather...worn down? It's a nice change from the normal mangas, but it wore down in the later chapters. I don't think I'm completing this for now. Maybe if I stumble over it again later on, but not now.

for those whom old enough to have the chance of enjoying ikkyuu-san, then think of this as a remake with a twist to gain the interest of the now young audience.. well at least that's the feeling i get from this manga...

The one-shot was excellent and the serialization so far is also good, while I am always hesitant, when a manga changes significantly for serialization, this ones changes were minor in comparison, and I think they were for the better.
I wonder how boring it would be for him to get wish after wish week after week, without having to really work for it.
The characters are solid, and so far remain the same as the one-shot, and the story is interesting and I am curious to see how it progresses and where it goes.
If you enjoy puzzle solving, or witty manga, chances are you'll get some enjoyment out of this series.

so, in order to turn the manga into a serial, they had to change the premise of it, though right now, i cant tell by how much.
the oneshot, the kid was possessed and got a wish every time he completed the riddle. this helped people
the manga... something about collecting wish shards, there are 12... and he has to use his wits to get through the situation instead of fighting.
can it be interesting... yea, i think so. but shonen jump has a way of turning a good idea, a good oneshot, into a pile of crap, something that no other magazine comes close to.
i am going to place my bets on that this will be good for a while, until the ratings dip, or it goes on for 30+ chapters (if it even makes it passed 18) it will turn to crap. take a look at the bread making mangas reactions as the manga goes on. they get dumber and dumber...
for the oneshot. i give it a 10.
for the manga, i give it a 5, having read 3 chapters, and that 5 is only on the potential, not how good it actually is.

A Mysterious Tale of Wits - Ikkyuu in Bloom is not the average, typical, cliche shonen manga most readers are accustomed to, and for once, this is quite great and refreshing.
The main character, like every other shonen, wants to help and aid any innocent bystander as much as he could, but the similarity ends there. His partner comes in a form of a demon that challenge the protagonist in a game of wits and riddles, as oppose to the usual over-exaggerated battles. The main character himself is both intelligent and confident, and often shows his cleverness when the situation calls for it.
For a one-shot, this is not bad, and should it ever be serialize, I really hope the author keeps most of the elements to make it one series that could eventually become Jump's greatest hit yet.
Update:
Not surprisingly, the one-shot eventually got serialized after 4 months, and aside from a few changes (including what appears to be the main plotline), it still maintains certain traits that makes the one-shot so good in the first place.
I'm still giving this manga a 10, as I'm certain this manga won't going away so quickly, plus, I'm willing to see what happens next.
