never read the novel, review based on manhwa

Based on other reviews I would read only the novel if I were to start over with this series. The pacing of the webcomic is so fast that it only made sense when I found out later that they were trying to condense too much content into comic form. There isn't much time to dwell on scenes or actions because of how quickly the characters move on. The MC isn't memorable because every action is chalked up to an act of self preservation based on his past life. Why did he feed bread to a hole? Because past memory. Why is he befriending this person and that person? Because past memory. None of the side characters serve any purpose beyond their past purpose in his memory that he is now trying to replicate. He constantly repeats how important Choi Han is and leaves the fighting to him, making Choi Han more of a muscle side character than anything. Sure MC's character does not need to be likeable, but his purpose and personality does not feel meaningful to whatever overarching story there is. Art is standard.

Not bad

Not a bad one but I think I prefer the novel more. The manga has its good points such as the art, I just feel that the arcs and dialogues are cut short and missing something. sometimes it look awkward like when the MC first met the hero, they didn't speak a full sentence to each others but he invited him home and the other just followed.

It's like shoujo, except it's not

Seriously, it's literally like every shoujo/romance manhwa I have read, where the main character finds herself trapped as a minor character in a novel, tries to change her abysmal fate but instead is collecting followers and admirers without knowing or even realising they are following her. Only in this story the MC is a man and I guess there is minimal romance, if any. Even the art style fits.

And I love it for all that. It feels like a refreshing twist after all the OP reincarnation trope that infest action manhwa. I don't know of the MC is going to be stronger but I like his leisurely take on life.

Pretty boys and Baldur's Gate
by AstralRabbit

Rating: 7.0  / 10.0
“Trash of the Count’s Family” is Baldur’s Gate if the MC was a isekai light novel character. A focus on interpersonal relations and navigation, rather than combat. You must gather your party to go forth! It’s competent, but I do have my concerns.

A classic trope of light novel characters is this aloof moral goodness – proclamations of self-interest and cynicism are of equal number to orphans and kittens fed and saved (or even orphan kittens!). These character traits are not necessarily mutually exclusive, you can be a right codger and still find value in doing good deeds for other people. But despite the MCs world weary and genre savvy mind, he regularly contradicts himself from thought to thought. One minute he clearly states he wants to avoid something or someone, and the next he is in close cahoots with the aforementioned irritation (e.g. older Stan brother and priestess). This is usually explained ad-hoc as being due to the relative value of the people the MC is helping, or some problematic situation he is vetoing with his actions. But his thoughts still lack congruity when accessing them pre and post arc.

This may well be the primary weakness of “Trash…”, and what I am most concerned about moving forward. The writing. The translation is likely knee capping the quality somewhat, but when thinking about the scenarios and arcs, nothing has stuck out just yet. The MC strolls from one story arc to the next, relatively self-assured, becoming steadily connected to the pretty members of the main cast. Like a shaggy dog running through a field of burdock. But that’s it so far. Characters are cute and the MCs ignorance to the growing infatuation of his coterie is fun, if a cliché. But they lack much beyond that at this point. Furthermore, character designs are good, but the backgrounds and general panelling has been simply functional.

So, aesthetic mediocrity with confused, and possibly shallow writing? I worry what the impact of this will be 100 chapters in? However, this is still an enjoyable time and as with Baldur’s Gate, grand fantasy narratives are best served after a long slow boil. This lasagne has got the pasta sheets, now it just needs the cheese, herbs and ragu sauce (aaaaaaand I’m hungry again).

Best

The best isekai manhwa I've read, even though I read the novel till chapter 407 already.
I do recommend reading the novel because it is more detailed compare to the manhwa.
Probably the most lacking thing in this manhwa is the art, the art is really good but the visualisation of the characters is really different than what I had imagined.
First, I thought that Hilsman would be like a vice captain that is clumsy but in the manhwa he looks manly and doesn't really fit his personality in the novel. Second, I thought that Cage will have long hair and wear a priest outfit or a robe in some sort but in the manhwa I think she words sleeveless outfit and has tattoo on her arms (What I thought that she would look more like a priest before she was excommunicated, but no). Third, Taylor and Venion, I thought that Venion would have handsome yellow blonde hair but he has an ash blonde bob cut hair (he looks shameless, even though I thought he would be a handsome jerk) and Taylor has long ash blonde hair (he looks decent) the thing is I thought that he would look like a man who has dark eyebag and would look like a hopeless man that has no energy left but he looks really elegant even though he's supposed to be abandoned.
I didn't see other character yet, but I hope Rosalyn is exactly what I imagined. Please don't destroy my imagination of Archie, Witira, Paseton, Alberu, Eruhaben, Tasha, Mary, Lock, Bud Illis, Clopeh Sekka, Hannah, Jack, Litana, Lord Sheritt, and others (especially penguin tribe).

You'll not regret it, it has the best action scene (especially in the war). Bubye, if you want spoilers just message me!

I wish I could tell more, but the only thing I can tell that THIS HAS THE BEST PLOT TWIST EVER...... I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THE AUTHOR WAS A GENIUS CREATING THOSE PLOT AND SCENARIOS!! I ENJOYED READING THE NOVEL!! AND THE MANHWA TOO!!

I like how the animal characters are drawn. The story though is getting repetitive. The all-knowing MC powers up and wins over an ally and powers up and wins over an ally and powers up… It’s like watching someone else play a video game on story mode. I hear good things about the novel. Maybe it’s better.

One of my favourite stories

No romance at all, how refreshing, world and character building to the max, liked it so much, I read all the novel volumes so far, if you liked omniscient reader’s view point, this one is definitely for you! 11/10

But in all seriousness. The most interesting part of the story for me, was uncovering who on earth the MC was on his previous life, some of the flashbacks made no sense without context, and no, it’s not a translation error, it’s just that we don’t have all the facts. The novel is way better than the manwha, simply because the dragon’s design isn’t akward and it’s just non existent.

Good so far

As Zurel puts it, this one takes the overused shoujo cliché and turns it into seinen. This little change changes pretty much everything and I've been wanting te see this approach for some time. In the first place, there is (so far) no romance, there are no excessive ridiculous and redundant plots on the MCs life, he analysis his situation, plots an action to take and steadily moves forward to avoid his "fate", there is no over convoluted and over simplified crown intrigue (so far), the MC is more of an aloof philanthrope with a hidden agenda he alone knows. Oh, and ignore the trash in the title, in my experience the word is synonym to "crap manhwa/ua" but it's not often used here, it's just there to represent that the char the MC takes over was a lost hope in the novel, there is no "idiot of the day" asking to be face-slapped, thankfully.
As for the story, so far it has been him making connections and avoiding or trying to avoid the provoking the wrong people, I truly don't know where it will go from here now that this sort of prologue is over (ch 30), but the author has done a good job in his storytelling so far so I have some hopes for this one.
Art is good as almost all manhwa nowadays.
Overall, an interesting read, one of the few interesting ones this year.

Bad storytelling

The manhwa/webtoon seems to have all the right pieces—likeable characters, pretty artwork, interesting storyline—but the storytelling of it is terrible. It's hard to follow the dialogues and I don't think it's a matter of translation. I've tried reading the official and unofficial translated versions and I still can't focus on what's being said. The conversations and thought processes are jumbled. The scenes feel disconnected. They do, for the most part, appear in chronological order but it's like we get glimpses of the main events without any additional info to make it make sense. Haven't read the webnovel so I can't really compare the two. Unfortunate, but most likely will be dropping it at ch 60.

Pretty Good. stronger start
by MatrixM

Reviewed @ch118
First, stick to the official translation. I switched over to fan translation around ch100 and it's mostly a huge step down. At time unintelligible sentences.

This series has a strong start. The in-story book's main character isn't very interesting but our main character is fun enough. The kids are absolutely adorable. The other supporting cast are solid enough.
Plot points themselves were carried out well until around ch80-ish, at which point it's losing steam.

Pacing was pretty fast, which I took to mean they were cutting extraneous stuff from the novels. Unfortunately it looks like a bunch of world-building and magical theory was also cut, as at times the main character says things as if they're assumed knowledge for the reader (I know he has peggy sue knowledge). Also magic feels so ill-defined I'm pretty much just thinking 'yeah, strong mages can do whatever the plot needs'.
But later, around idk 70? chapters in I felt there was a pretty huge cut. People in comments were saying that actually a LOT of stuff was cut from novels. So I'm guessing the worldbuilding and magic stuff was cut out, hence my confusion.

100 chapters in, I'm losing interest, but this might be due ti poor translation. I'll check back in a year or so.
Or just read the novels, some time.
