Ah, the perfect gentleman. <3

I'm looking for a male protagonist who is a perfect gentleman.

That does NOT mean that he is rich, "sophisticated" or eloquent, because it's possible to be all of those things without actually being a true gentleman. A man is only a true gentleman if he is chivalrous and genuinely respectful of women, and... Hey, actually, here's a handy checklist to help you identify a perfect gentleman! (As per my criteria, anyway!) For a protagonist to be eligible for this thread, he must have proved himself at least once in each one of these categories.

CHECKLIST FOR GENTLEMANOOD:

>> Chivalrous towards women, e.g. holds doors open, pulls out chairs, walks on the outer side of the sidewalk, never lets a girl walk home alone in a dangerous neighborhood, etc.

>> Respectful towards women, i.e. does not verbally, physically or emotionally abuse them, does not treat them as sex objects or possessions, does not underestimate them or "talk down" to them.

>> Compassionate towards elders and those in need, e.g. he helps little old ladies carry things across the street, gives up his seat on public transport if a pregnant lady gets on, helps an ailing elderly neighbor by tending to their garden, would help a lost child find their parents, etc.

>> Morally responsible, e.g. always does the right thing, even if given the opportunity to do something immoral (like taking advantage of a drunk/distraught girlfriend, cheating on his partner or betraying a friend for money).

>> Courageous and strong-willed, i.e. will stand up against injustice when he sees it happening, will never just stand around and watch someone get mugged/bullied, will speak up if he sees something wrong, etc.

>> Independent and dignified, e.g. will never depend on anyone else for money (once he's an adult capable of earning his own keep, anyway!), will never exploit anyone for his own gain, lives with integrity and decency, keeps his own shit together and keeps his head held high even in tough times.

... And that's about it!

Yeah, I know, some of you might be looking at that and thinking: "How sickeningly perfect! Is there even a guy like that?" But yes, yes there is. Remember that just because the guy is a perfect gentleman, doesn't mean that he's perfect in EVERY way - he could be short-tempered, painfully shy, ill-at-ease, socially inept, physically unappealing, gruffly abrupt, not too bright, almost fatally clumsy or anything else. biggrin So he doesn't have to be the perfect guy, just a perfect gentleman. I don't care if the male protgaonist is 60 pounds overweight or has schizotypal personality disorder or is a total recluse... AS LONG AS he fulfills all the criteria in my checklist (chivalry, respect, compassion, morality, courage and dignity).

Examples of manga protagonists that I think are perfect gentlemen: Yoh from High School Debut, William from Emma, Kurosaki from Dengeki Daisy (he only PRETENDS not to be a perfect gentleman, but trust me, he is one), Kuroe from Blood Alone, Zen from Red-Haired Snow White, Hiro from Man of Tango (yeah, I know he's flaming gay, but he is a perfect gentleman, towards men and women), Eagle from Blue Ramun, Ren from Skip Beat! (lulz when he's tempted by lust but resists like a true gentleman!), yet another Ren from Strobe Edge, and Seiji from Love So Life.

Thanks in advance!

At first I thought, "that has shoujo or shonen ai written all over it." Then I thought of one that fits. Angel Densetsu. Technically he is the perfect gentleman. Though since you're looking for a gentleman I assume you're looking for more of a love story. Sorry.. Though there are some love elements in there. The art isn't great at the beginning and it's not amazing at the end. But I think the story lets you overlook that flaw.

On a side note. I kind of feel like when people are requesting a new manga to read, they should have public lists. I'd like to assume pretty much everyone has read this manga since it is so great, but alas I am not able to check.
Of course I don't have public lists, but I never request anything.

Sebastian is a perfect demon, and only a gentleman for expedience's sake, I should think! (Of course, I still love him for all his dastardly deeds.) biggrin

@IkuyoK, thanks for reccing that! Yes, he IS a perfect gentleman. I'm very happy even with non-romantic recs... I want a gentleman even if he isn't romantically involved - I just want to see a guy behave that way. eyes Gentlemen are so cute. I know that everyone says nice guys finish last, but in my book, they always finish first. <3 (Actually, the other guys don't even get to the finish line!)

Shounen ai is also all right! Like I included in my examples, Man of Tango has a guy who I think is an amazingly gentle, chivalrous man - and he's gay, but, um. Definitely a gentleman, through and through. Does the right thing (now, anyway, despite his messy past) and treats his love interest (male, but... hey, so what?) with the utmost respect and tenderness. And he treats the women in his life extremely well, too... Just an amazing man all around.

Arguably, the gay lawyer in What Did You Eat Yesterday? is also a perfect gentleman. I love that episode in which he splits this giant watermelon with a housewife while shopping... And then tries to behave tactfully at her home, by even outing himself on the spot so that her husband doesn't think she's having an affair... Lol. That's chivalry for you!

So, yeah, any kind of manga is fine as long as it has a perfect gentleman in it. Doesn't have to be a romance - but if it is, it can be a gay or a straight romance, I don't mind either way. smile

Thanks and keep reccing!

I guess the only person matching all the points you listed is Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club biggrin In addition, he's an idiot. But you've definitely read Ouran already biggrin
