Sorry but I more read the book on ares list. Crime and punishment is good but my favourite would have to be 100 years of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Seriously i've read tons of great books and even lots of the classics (not crap like school text books those aren't classics imo) like shakespeare and homer and even socrates and all sorts of wierd russian named guys lol. But there's nothing else quite like 100 years of solitude. It follows the lives of the buendia family and all the everyday tragedies that befall them as the book crosses the hundred year timeline the characters die off and new generations take the forefront of the story. Did I mention that it is crazy as well. A masterpiece in magical realism. Be warned there are some graphic things in this book. Also even if you read it in english it's still great. Let me see a retarded girl who cover the wall with her faeces and a girl that ascends to heaven in front of everyone cause she's so pure 😕 This book is crazy good. It will draw you in like nothing I've ever seen and you will probably come out of it with a new outlook on life. It's that good. Also good from the same author is Love in the time of cholera. 😛 Oh and read Don Quixote. 😀

anybody ever read anything by carlos castaneda ? even though he is considered new age by some, his books house a whole range of philosophical views. and beside that it's really fun and confusing to read them. a great influence on my life.

yes....Don Quixote....a delusional knight wannabe who tries to kill a windmill and dies.........

Have you ever read any Tolstoy books?

By the way, no offense to Fahrenheit 451 fans, but The Martian Chronicle was much better. Same author. Mid aged delusional fire fighter with a psychotic wife cannot match the events called 'People on Earth killing every Martian on Mars for no reason'. 😀

This is rather random, but...

Has anyone read the novel version of Battle Royale? How exactly does it compare to the manga series that it spurred?

(I'm enjoying it so far, but there are just so many characters~ It's so difficult to keep 'em all straight in my head. I actually had to make a character chart to make sure I could remember who was who. x_o )

First of all if you've read cervantes' book and make that statement then you have no ability to see anything besides what is in front of you and I don't want to talk to you about books anymore. If you haven't and that statement comes from a loose knowledge of what it's about then you should go read the book. Cervantes isn't one of the greatest writers of all times for no reason.

Yep Anna Karenina and War and Peace 😛 😎

Battle Royale? Well.....a novel about kids killing each other with the support of some weird gov't...not really my taste.

you know luisalirio84 ....why are you so offensive in your speech.......Do not be so quick to judge a man.

I am authorized by the American Law to express my opinion on these books. And My opinion is that that book is about some delusional knight wannabe trying to kill a windmill. I didn't say it's a bad book. I merely point out the cold humour. I hope you do realize that the author intended to make the main character pathetic to show the reader the transition from a superstitious world into a world of logic and science......duhh

Was my speech offensive? If it was it's only because I dislike stupid people. And that statement is very stupid no matter what you try to say to defend it. I'm sorry is this forum governed by america? That's just stupid again. This is the internet. the internet doesn't belong to america and is not governed by american law(well most of it is this an american site i'm not sure now?). More appropriate would have been to say that freedom of speech allows you to express your opinion. But even a monkey with half a brain could express his opinion so it doen't make your statement any less ignorant and uninformed. DUHH? are you like 6 years old or something? I suggest you actually read the book which i'm sure you haven't or that you can't really understand it else you would never write the garbage which is your previous post in quotations. And try not to quote stuff you may have seen some stupid narc who gave himself a fancy title write on a blog. Bleh 😛 And I repeat you lack the ability to read between the lines/ see beyond the surface- Pick one. 😀

And just as you are allowed to voice your opinion on books you don't understand i'm allowed to voice my opinion on people and their opinions which I don't understand. So hypocrasy?

Whatever man.......you're always so hostile toward people who disagrees with you......just forget it. I don't want to be flamed.

Anyone read Toni Morrison's Sula? It's pretty......ermmmm colorful in language and descriptions. It's shocking, it's bold. It explores the nature of human in its ugliest times. Oh, and how can I forget a book called Heart Of Darkness. Joseph Conrad is clever in imagery and language; but whoa, it's very very....tiring to read. A short novel, but not enough action. Almost as tiring as reading Shelly's Frankenstein.

Was I being hostile? Oops oh well. I haven't read sula but I read Song of Solomon. Also if you like black history and black literature you could read wide sargasso sea or poems by a Caribbean writer called Derek Walcott. 😛

Yes, I'd say you were, not only in this thread but in the "uh...Hinata" thread to. And while in that thread it might have felt like you where joking, in this one that wasn't really the case.
And while I do agree that Don Quixote, is more than just "a delusional wanna be Knight in his struggle against a windmill", I still think that people are entitled to their opinion. And that you should try to keep your cool...

Well on the subject of books, like I think I've already said, I read mostly French literature. And I don't know why, but reading this thread again reminded me of Guy de Maupassant, seriously cool short stories writer. And luisalirio didn't you say you can read French? So if you like stories that go on for hundreds of years and different generations maybe you should try reading les Rougons-Macquart series by Émile Zola... it goes on for 5 generations... Seriously, not my thing, I've read the couple of books that where required of me, and a couple of more until I got tired seriously... I might try finishing the series, one day...
Wait, does that make me sound like only read short stories and wasn't able to finish les Rougons-Macquart because of it's length? na, that's far from the truth, it's just that that type of story isn't my style.

yes, his "Le Horla" was quite scary. I didn't read it honestly, I got a digital edition from the library. Audio on-line rocks! 😃

I like Edgar Alan Poe. His stories are twisted and sick. 😃 Remember the the one eyed cat?

Did I not keep my cool I was completely calm when I wrote that post. Honest. Oh well . Oh well is my motto for today btw. hehe I have been troublesome today.

I will give it a look when I have the chance. That is in between manga. Don't know when that'll be though. French literature: Hmm I have quite a few books by Albert Camus but other than that only Dumas. 😛

Just finished A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murikami (translated by Alfred Birnbaum). It's....hmmmmm a very bizarre and interesting book. At least half the time I had no freaking idea what was going on, but in the end it does all make sense.

Kind of.

I think I need to wait a couple weeks, read it again, and then maybe I'll understand it better.

In the meantime, I have Murikami's After the Quake and Kafka on the Shore to read.....

wow, chill out luis. I felt that you were hostile, too.

Haha... oh my goodness... someone (I think savage?) pointed out a book by toni morrison. ugh!! hahah... I read Beloved... (almost forgot that I did) and I was just too creeped out by it. 🙁

But the best book is about the bunnies. Yes. Watership Down shows the courageousness of bunnies in all their glory! 😀 hahahaha

Ohhh... I think reading watership down led me to read some brian jacques novels... anyone here read Redwall? ^_^

Redwall was about those field mice right? The kingdom of mice.

Savage? My name is not savage....... 😔

i think Toni Morrison is a great writer, but her works are a little too explicit.
