Yes, he was smart. But that isn't the only prerequisite to be a Vasto Lorde. You also need immense strength, which he clearly didn't have. But I commend him though for using his brains~

When a shinigami "kills" a hollow, they either 1) perform a soul funeral and send them into soul society or 2) send them into hell if the soul of the hollow has done some messed up things in his/her life. The reasoning for this is that hollows don't have the ability to supress their hunger for souls. So does this still apply to adjuchas and vast lordes, and espada, who are able to, of their own free will, consume either hollows or non-hollow souls?

I think that the stronger you get as a Hollow, the more their hunger for souls fade. Also remember, that when they're Gillian they form their own conscious. So they can choose whether to act like a "beast" or not.

Oh wait, I misunderstood the question. Hmm, first of all only one method that you mention is legitimate. The first isn't used on Hollows, IIRC.

And I guess they(Adjuchas,etc.) also go to SS when they're slain by a Shinigami? Or maybe they just fade into spirit particles.

What chapter did Szayel say he made his fracciones? Cuz I can't find it.

To your argument though, it's hard to say since there really is no defined science in terms of souls and the like in Bleach. Grimmjow and the menos grande with him seemed to consume other hollows into order to get stronger. Nothing really about training, learning some technique, etc. This could be seen as them absorbing souls to increase in power. In Szayel's case, he consumed his fraccion in order to heal himself. From my point of view, the consumption of the fraccion's body (ie. the spirit particles) would help Szayel recover whatever he's lost due to injuries. The absorption of the fraccion's soul might help accelerate the process of healing. Also, Szayel said that his fraccion were specially designed with the purpose of being consumed by Szayel when he needs to recover. They could be unique among fraccion by having their bodies filled with stuff like medicines, antidotes, and whatnot.

Chapter 130 when she was reminiscing about when she trained with Urahara in the training facility where Ichigo achieved Ban Kai, there's a shot of her with a sword sheathed by her side. Don't know if that's her zanpakuto, since her fighting style seems to be more hand to hand combat mixed with kido. It's implied she knows Ban Kai since she was the former head of the Special Ops Forces, which Soi Fong is at the moment. Can't say if the special ops were an actual part of the gotei 13 (supposedly 2nd division) or a separate division when Yoruichi was in charge of it.

Nah, they're a seperate division. They don't belong to the Gotei 13. And we also don't know what the prerequisites are to be the Captain of said Division. But since Yoruichi is so strong, I think it's only logical she has a Bankai? o.O
