I have been on manga updates for around 3.5 years now but I haven't really found any desi otakus, so to speak. Thru this thread i'm hoping to flush some desi otakus out coz it would be nice to be able to find people to talk to.

Basically what I want to know is if you are from the Indian Sub-continent (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh), how long you have been into manga and anime, and do you many people with the same interest in manga and anime?

Anyway, I'm gonna go first,
I'm from Pakistan, I've been into anime since I first saw Dragon ball when I was like 10, and over the years have evolved into a full blown otaku ( Manga, anime, light novels, visual novels, the works lol), And I only really know 3 people who are into manga and anime, but not to the same extent as me, and some more who only watch naruto ( which I personally never liked).

So here we go, come out your holes people if you read this, and let us find some desi otakus
😛

Hi!
I am from India and have been on MU for the past 2 years and 2 months.
My first anime was either Ninja Senshi Tobikage or Dragon Ball Z, at the age of 10. I evolved into a real Otaku when I discovered that many animes were in fact based on Manga and that there was a species of noble, selfless people called scanalators who made these available for the non-japanese speaking community 😀 . At the age of 18 my first manga was Full Metal Alchemist 😃
Other otakus I know of are my younger brother and a couple of guys at my university. But these guys are more into mainstream anime and manga like Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, etc

I actually found a couple of desi otakus 2 years ago in this Forum Topic

That was unexpected.. I never expected anyone to come out openly with it, but I am still glad. Anyway I am from India, the western part of it to be more specific. Anime has been a part of my life since childhood. My very first anime was also Dragon Ball, but I was introduced to it way earlier. I used to wait for it to air on TV everyday, since sadly internet was the great unknown to me till I was like 11-12 years old. Other anime I loved watching until they were scrapped were Kochikame, Digimon, Beyblade(Oh, the beyblade craze!), pokemon(now this was one anime everyone watched) and shinchan.

I was still quite unaware about the awesomeness of manga until about a year ago. Reading manga was initially just the "other option" for me. I preferred reading novels. But, when I gave up my Kindle last year to prepare for exams and stuff the other option became very tempting. Needless to say I was hooked onto it after my very first manga, Dengeki Daisy.

I have met only one other person who is into anime. But my friend watches only mainstream anime like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece etc.

lol I finally got tired of trying to randomly stumble upon some desi otakus, so to speak, so I decided to make a thread, I'm hoping to find more people because there should be a sizable community just by going on population stats alone lol.

I think that is gonna be the same for most of the desi otakus lol, because that is exactly my story too.
Though I have been reading manga for a while now, around 4-5 years, and prefer reading over everything else.

There is not much of an otaku community here though, people are into some of the mainstream stuff like you said. I created this thread because there was a comicon of sorts held recently in my university, which really surprised me and gave me hope lol.

Anyway nice to meet you people, and glad to see that I'm not the only one here lol.

Oh I forgot about that thread since it's been a while, lol going thru it I found my own post, which is where I guess I got the idea for this thread.

Wish something like that were held here. I have tried to introduce a few people to manga, but they simply refuse to be brought into it. 😢 Nice to find more desi otakus though 😀

Interesting thread, I guess I'm curious about the numbers too. I'm pretty sure there are lots of us here. XD
I am also from India and I have been into anime since I was nine, I think. My first anime was Cardcaptor Sakura. After that, I was into Transformers, Pokemon, Full metal alchemist and the lot. I got into manga after watching Deathnote and Naruto. Though I joined mangaupdates around 4 years back, I had been stalking releases on it for nearly two years before I finally joined. Quite a few of my friends are into Anime and Manga(not just mainstream ones), so I always have someone to discuss this stuff with xD

There were loads of anime and manga fans at the Delhi Comic-con this month, though the stuff being sold was again, mainstream. :'(

*pretty sure this thread is supposed to be under Chatter Box, though 😮 *

I have tried to get people into manga too, but so far, no real luck. The most I have managed is getting my brother to watch a couple of anime with me, he was almost as big a fan of dbz as me lol.

And as far as the comicon is concerned, I missed it lol, It was held on the first weekend of the new semester and I, being the lazy fuck that I am, skipped the first week, so missed it too. It is my biggest regret of university life to date lol.

That sounds pretty cool, only ever had one friend like that, and that was back in highschool.

yeah, now that I think about it,you are right, but I have no idea how I'm supposed to move it now, so if you know how to, or you can move it yourself, i'd appreciate it.

I wouldn't mind being able to find some mainstream manga too, My entire manga collection, as of now, is a couple of random issue of shonen jump and some black rock shooter merchandise that my dad brought back from Japan lol.

@Accursed-kun
Nice to meet you too bro

Hey guys,

Glad to see there's a few out there.
I'm also Indian by heritage, but born in South Africa and now living in Australia. (kinda weird)
But yeah my first was Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon back when I was a kid, I only started realizing what anime was around 2008 and started reading manga and watching anime and learning more about the japanese culture. I am now interested in more broadly japanese and korean drama and manga as well. I love foreign cultures.

Sadly there aren't any indian's around that are into anime/manga that I know of, we're kind of a minority when it comes to being fans huh.

It's not that weird, I have seen alot of people like you, well not that many but still enough for it to not be weird lol.
I have seen my fair share of korean and japanese drama, alot more then I'll ever admit in public, though not so much these days. There are not that many fans of manga and anime here but it is still a sizeable minority I guess, the hard part is flushing those people out, atleast that's been my experience.
Still it's always nice to meet people who share the same interests so nice to meet you 🙂

hey guys,
one more Indian otaku here, like most of us here my first anime was dragon ball then pokemon, beyblade ( i had beyblade toys too ), card captor sakura and more , but i had no clue what anime or manga was until 3 or 4 (or 5) years ago.. i was exposed to mangas through korean movie (my little bride) which i accidentally watched on utv world movies( i will forever be grateful to utv) and then i watched boys over flowers which i found was adapted from a manga so from then on i have went though various otaku phases. first i was shoujo manga fan ( yeah i know) then to basically all kind of romance then to shounen (one piece, dragon ball z, fairy tail ,etc) and...... yaoi (no rude comments please,as i live for yaoi). i really wish though that mangas and Manhua (love them) would be available in India (at a reasonable rate). So ever since then i have been interested in korean and japanese culture and i would really like to visit these countries.
oh! i have two brothers (cousins) who are anime otakus (one piece, naruto, etc).
p.s. i am from mumbai and i love one piece and yaoi ( deal with it )

I am another Indian (Bengali, to be precise) otaku outta here. I am just over a year (January 2013) into animes and mangas. My first one is Hayate the Combat Butler. I have also read Sket Dance, Nisekoi, Wagatsuma-san wa Ore no Yome and other rom coms. I really avoid ecchi and action.

Though I was not introduced to this world from Dragonball, Naruto or Beyblade ( Thought I used to watch pokemon, but I didn't know about anime at that time and again I ONLY watch pokemon). It actually came up during the pan Indian digitization process due to which we gained Animax. Out of Curiosity I started watching it and saw Hayate the Combat Butler on it (Season 1, Ep 4precisely as to say). I slowly became addicted to it and couldn't leave it. And then was when I came into manga and was fascinated so much that I became an otaku. This is my short little story.

I guess that depends on where you live. My town has no other manga fan I know of. At least not among my circle of friends. I broadcasted my manga addiction to get some response as well.. No response 😐
Like hman69 said it's pretty hard to flush out the manga/anime fans. Most probably they are embarassed..

I would also love to visit Korea,Japan and China. It's really interesting to read more about their cultures. So much to learn!! The only thing which I worry about is what I would eat there, since I am a vegetarian 😔
nothing wrong with liking yaoi either. I am a shoujo addict. Nice way to pass time. Been trying more seinen nowadays though. I have my occasional yaoi now and then. But, I am not into it exactly.

There are several but I don't think they would be considered otakus by most otakus. There is a limit to how much desi otakus get involved in anime and manga. Most go just as far as watching or reading. Few go as far as collecting but that's about it. But because of how bad cartoons are drawn now a days the number of desi anime watchers probably increased by a lot because it is the better drawn cartoon with a story.
