It's serialized in a seinen magazine. The lead and content is utterly irrelevant.

My personal favorite is Usagi Drop, but I don't read much josei.

Huh, I didn't realize the publication defined the genre. I always thought the genre was defined by the target audience. So that makes Matsuri Special a shounen manga.

I have never looked at Matsuri Special as a shounen manga even if it's serialized in a shounen magazine...

Yes, it's technically a shounen manga that reads like a shoujo.

It's up to the editors to decide what goes into any given magazine, no matter what it seems like. If you think about it, if you're in a magazine targeted at a specific demographic, you are technically targeting that demographic (although it may be attempting to bring in new readership or something). Whether it has the cliches and or premise of something else is another matter entirely.

I would argue that Hataraki Man's premise and storytelling are more tailored to entice young men, but that's subjective. Regardless, it's not unheard of to have a manga with a lead of the opposite gender, just look at Claymore.

Jump SQ is an interesting case. Shueisha started publishing it to replace the Monthly Shounen Jump magazine, but in their 'promo flyer', they said that it's neither shounen nor shoujo specific. (It goes under the shounen section, though, on Shueisha website.)

They seem to be trying pretty hard to get more non-shounen audience to read the magazine, by publishing one-shots by other popular 'non-shounen mangaka'. Kamio Youko is a successful case of such attempt (and it's not a one-shot, in her case), but Higashimura Akiko doesn't seem to receive similar feedback (with Chuo-sen Cinema Paradise). *CCP was recycled in Jump SQ from Cookie magazine.

They also invited Shinjo Mayu to draw a one-shot in Jump SQ (with Apple!), very likely in an attempt to get more shoujo audience to buy the magazine. I haven't read the story though, so can't really tell if it has more shounen flavour or not.

Anyway, to get back on track... It's hard to decide on one best title, but Honey and Clover will always remain on my evergreen list. 😀

Haven't read enough Josei sadly T.T (although I really enjoy it). But I'm a huge addict to all of the above.

I think The Embelmer (probably spelt that wrong) deserves an honorable mention, however, I've only read about the first volume, so I'm not sure yet 🤣

I love josei as a genre in general, my favourite of all's gotta be Nodame Cantabile~ I'm kinda sad it's on hiatus. But I heard that Ninomiya-sensei have just given birth to a boy, hoping that both mother and son are well =D

You are right, there are many titles out there like Claymore or Black lagoon that feature female leads, but while I enjoy strong female leads wielding 9mms or huge swords chasing baddies or slaying monsters, I wouldn't consider those josei based on gender alone, as they are decidedly seinen or at least one of them is. I however concede to the notion that classifying Hataraki Man as being josei or seinen based on its storytelling is indeed subjective. So, to encompass both views, we could classify it as both Seinen and Josei, or just a damn good manga.

Well, I'll definitely agree with you that it's good, but the fact of the matter is that regardless of what it feels like it is serialized in a seinen magazine, and is thusly primarily targeting the seinen demographic. As was mentioned earlier, Jump SQ is sort of a special case, but Morning has always distinctly been a seinen magazine. That much isn't subjective, which is why I feel that the dual classification doesn't really make sense, lest we end up with swarms of people insisting that Death Note is actually seinen again.

But we've gone pretty far off topic, perhaps I should just be quiet, but I thought it worth mentioning.
