Since you said books were okay i recently read
The Hunger Games by suzanne collins.
Very very good.
Its romance and politics. Its the first in a trilogy & it seems that the political aspects will continue to become more important. I plan on reading the next two books soon. Looks like a revolution is coming. 😀

Utsushimi no Hana
It has a bit of politics in it and it's pretty good plotwise.

Yami no Alexandra is mild on the politics side and more on the romance
Cantarella
Four Daughters of Armian is highly recommended! This is like one of the best manhwa I've read and the first one that got me interested with manhwa. Before that I was always like meh... manhwa
Lineage by the same author of Four Daughter of Armian
Princess is pretty good but kinda draggy and now, it's on hiatus. Bummer
Bichunmoo
Asakiyumemishi arguably even if it's Genji story, there's more politics than I would've expected. Talking about how one fight for getting more power in the palace, etc
Saiunkoku Monogatari fits your description. Really well written! And nice development. The girl is not annoying and weak
possibly this Ninohime no Monogatari but I may be wrong since I read it a long time ago. I got the impression that it's quite good somehow but can't remember why 🤨
Help! I'm looking for... manga with dangerous guys http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=39874&page=1#post594033

Thirding Dokuhime, though it can be a little disturbing. It's absolutely amazing.
Thirding (or more) Saiunkoku Monogatari
Thirding Hiiro no Isu
Suggesting... Hanasakeru Seishounen. It's got too many bishies and it's kind of sort of reverse harem, but it's surprisingly engaging, especially when the country's struggles take the spotlight. It's probably a series I should claim as a guilty pleasure, but I enjoyed it a lot, especially since it is extremely interesting and engaging with surprisingly original twists on some old tropes even though it's a rather old series.
