Does this REALLY happen in Japan?

I believe that has already been answered and it was, yes, people with hairstyle exist, but they aren't as common as they used to be. Unless you're reading Worst, where everyone either has a bald head or one of those.
Sarcasm just doesn't work over the internet.
How large are anime and manga stores in Japan?
Is anime and manga THAT big over there? Like if you go to a school how many people there read manga? And do schools allow you to read manga or do they treat them like we treat comics here? (like we have/had "free reading" time in younger grades and sometimes older)
Depends where the store is. Gamers in Akihabara is 8 floors of anime and manga bliss. Animate is 6 floors, but they have more floor space pre floor, I think.

Yeah, the Gamers Spanky is talking about is massive. Even in the smaller town that my host family was in, the manga section in the bookstore that they took me to was 10 times the largest in my city.
There isn't the same stigma on manga that you find in the US. Most people I meet tend to think manga is for young children or look down on it but in Japan you see business men on the subway reading it. Not sure on the schools since I only visited one and didn't really participate in daily classes.

You would have to use a lot of hair gel to get that kind of hair, some cement mixed with it would be good

Does everyone own a kotatsu? Because they look really really comfortable, and do people usually not use tables with chairs to eat at, and what is more common, a bed or a futon.

Beds are becoming more and more common nowadays, but I say more people still use futons. I love it. Very comfy. 😀 And you'll never "fall" off it. XD Most families have a kotatsu. It's an all purpose thing. You can eat in it, watch tv in it, do homework, or just hang out. XD
Also, most houses I've been to don't have tables and chairs, especially apartments. Houses and apartments in Japan are extremely small, you wouldn't be able to fit them in even if you wanted to. They just have low tables and we sit on the floor.

I was wondering about the cultural and sport festivals that one sees in anime, are they really like that in reality in Japan? i.e Haunted houses, food stands and competition between different classes (in sports that is).
Also, what about this whole "test of courage" thing, is it really that popular?

That hairstyle (the pompadour[not that exaggerated]) is actually not relegated only to that group of people in japan. It is also very popular in the Rockabilly and Psychobilly music scenes stateside.

After reading this topic and one related to it, I started wondering - is the 26/30 hour day common in Japan? And how, well, how does it work?

I heard they have a thirty hour day. Hm, maybe my facts are wrong.
Oh, and if you really didn't know they're including midnight to 6 AM in the previous days TV schedule, so that's why it exists like that for show times. I think it's midnight to 6 AM, anyway.

Yes. It's very common. If you go to Japanese anime websites (for anime that airs after 12 midnight---which is a lot of them), almost all of them state their airtimes that way. I don't know why, actually. It's just the way it is. XD
