I think Max Lovely would fit in to the "both on relatively same level" and have equal popularity within the school.

Kaze no Stigma might fit, but this is an action novel . There is anime adaptation. 😳

I've been recommending this manhwa a lot lately but...anyway, it really fits.
In Orange Marmalade both the female and male lead are considered good-looking and attractive by most of the other classmates at school---to the point of having a huge population of the school going after each of them. Plus the series is located inside a school. I think this is exactly what you're looking for.
I double-recommend Skip Beat. It kind of fits (but not exactly). The female lead is considered plain for most of the beginning of the series. Later they figure out that if she puts lots of makeup and clothes she can transform to look entirely different for the role she's acting for---her talent and "looks" (when she's dolled up) are said to be on par with a male lead that is very popular for his gentleman nature and good looks.

But if it makes you happy to win on the internet, have at it.

This is hard...
The first thing that came to mind was H2, particularly Hideo and Hikari. That was pretty much the only thing I could get out of my lists (which is supposed to be dominated by shounen romances).

Not exactly romance, but Sketchbook and Kimi to Kami Hikoki to. are good slice of lice =D
Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru and Kimi to Boku. are really good romance/slice of life too ;D

V.B. ROSE, both characters are considered really good looking by the people in the manga, it's slice of life since they have a job and its definitely romance!! Its perfect.

I think people are forgetting about the Shounen part of the request...
Slice of life:
Yanki-kun to Megane-chan - Ex Delinquent wants to improve her image, she drags a delinquent with her.
Nonslice of life:
Bloody Cross - Half angels are cursed, they have to search for a God artifact before they're killed.
Goth - Horror obsessed main characters search out serial killers. (I don't remember if they're refereed to as good looking in the manga or the novel)
