@ chibilin: The main couple doesn't get into a relationship until the very end of the manga in Strobe Edge, so it doesn't fit the unrequited love -> relationship -> requited love relationship pattern.

hmmm, I didn't realize that. I actually dropped Strobe Edge because it was becoming obvious she wasn't going to choose the guy I wanted for her. yeah, I'm petty like that. Then I looked for ending spoilers, just to be sure. heh.

Thinking about it, then, I'm not sure if Yumemiru Taiyou fits, then, because the love is still in the unrequited stage, but I'm making the assumption that will change eventually. But I'm obviously not a very good predictor of that kind of thing. 😛 We'll see.

LOL! I did the same thing with that manga. (And I'm glad I didn't read until the end because the spoilers made me rather angry. The manga literally added insult to injury to my preferred character. 😛 )

Hmm...well...u can try.....Nana to Kaoru.... Its pretty much what you wanted...except...that....the only part which doesn't match up to the scenario you have given...is..that...the hero..isn't desperate...even though he is madly in love with the girl...

Oh...n..its NOT hentai...BUT...does have a sexual theme....

Mix Vegetable - Has "I'm Learning to Love You" thing.
The protagonist has another intention at first, then they start dating. The male char is sweet and pure, so the protagonist is feeling guilty.

Just read one that fits this request:

Chitose etc. by the same author as Marmalade Boy.

The scanlations haven't yet gotten to the part that fits (only 2 chapters have been done), but as you can see in the summary, the girl transfers to a school in Tokyo to be with a boy she fell in love with at first sight, only to discover he has a girlfriend. In the 8th chapter, a second guy comes along (that's him on the 2nd volume cover):

Turns out he's in love with the girlfriend of the guy the main character (Chitose) is in love with. He asks her to go out with him because he likes her and wants to move on from his unrequited love and thinks they can move on together. She eventually agrees. So far, they are trying, and having some, but not total success in making a go of their relationship.

It's an on-going manga, so it's unknown if the girl will end up with the 1st or 2nd guy. In the beginning, the 1st guy seems better, but the 2nd guy really grows on you. I'd really like for them to succeed in learning to love one another and get an ending like the one you're looking for. I don't know if they will or not since a lot of the official art features the girl with the 1st guy, but it seems guy #2 is more popular with the fans, so we'll see.

I'd like to keep finding more stuff like this, please! More recs? 😀 😀

I've read Yumemiru Taiyou thanks to chibilin's rec and loved it (or AM loving it, since it's ongoing).

Any more stories with the unrequited love -> dating/relationship -> requited love pattern?

I'm willing to accept non-manga stories, too... Like TV shows or movies or books. 🙂

Edit: The second story of Hokenshitsu no Target is kiiiind of like this - gay guy falls for straight guy, who is blind-sided but open-minded, and who tries sleeping with the gay guy and begins to discover a fledgling attraction in return - but the love isn't quite requited yet (it's obvious it will be, though, and soon). Another yaoi manga which works is Doushitemo Furetakunai dj - After 9 Hours and its sequels. They do try dating before the love is requited.

Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen fits what you are asking for.

Royalty from two warring countries decide to get married in order to stop the feuding. Initially they appear not to get along very well and to have entered into the marriage only for the sake of political reasons, but you find out pretty quickly (within the first few chapters) that Prince Johane has actually been in love with Princess Euda the whole time. So the flow of the manga is to get Princess Euda to return his feelings.

i agree, Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen fits perfectly and so does Reimei no Arcana
i recommend Akagami no Shirayukihime its alot like Reimei no Acana although it is still ongoing 😀

I think Replay is exactly what you are describing and with a twist. A guy obsessively loves a girl, but she doesn't feel the same way about him. She also falls for another guy. Long story short - after a few bad circumstances they are reincarnated in a continuous loop where he obsesses over her, she loves another guy, but out of pity (or what ever it may be) pushes herself to try and love him anyway.

Surprised no one has said 100% Perfect Girl
EDIT
Fits your request perfectly.
Lots of smut though, well in a way.

I second Itazura na Kiss and Tsuki no Shippo
I think Lovely Complex would fit your request.
I've only seen a few episodes of the drama but perhaps Full House I don't know if that completely fits though as well as
Nodame Cantabile just because the male main character does not appreciate the female lead romantically until later on. It's my favorite manga ever and I love the unrequited senario 😀
also mayhap Kamisama Hajimemashita that one might be a stretch though, because he does kind of like her in the beginning but he doesn't admit to himself that his feelings are romantic

Thank you all SO much! I'm working through your recommendations! 🙂
