Okay, so this is gonna sound weird. I looked through topics and even did a search, so I'm pretty sure that this isn't a duplicate, but... Anyway.

I'm looking for a series where one of the main characters is dying from some sort of illness. (Can you tell I'm a fan of drama?) It doesn't necessarily have to be romance; in fact, I'd almost prefer that it not be, but tragic romance is excellent as well. I'm asking because I'm currently reading NABARI NO OU and it has totally and absolutely captured me. (FFFFF YOITE. glimmers) That, and I'm a total fan of drama, death and tragedy amidst excellent character development.

Tragedy is optional.

Also, anything along the same lines, like (to use an extremely mainstream example, Zero from Vampire Knight) is also good. I just like the doomed-to-die sorta characters. xD /SHOT

Please, no smut, ecchi, shounen-ai, shoujo-ai or yaoi.

LOL, I just pretty much eliminated 90% of all possible responses, didn't I? can already see thread fizzling, dying Uh. Yeah.

Any suggestions?

Series I've already read:

= Mucha Kucha Daisuki
= Boku no Hatsukoi wo kimi ni Sasagu
= Nabari no Ou
= Chrno Crusade (Lol, it fits. Sorta.)

One of the stories of Ef - A Tale of Melodies features a man facing death, though that's anime. Watching the first season - A Tale of Memories - is optional, I guess. And in a way deals with 'death' as well, but then in a unique way as in a memory disorder.

hmmm... these might not quite be what your looking for, but they kinda fit.

Full Moon wo Sagashite - main character is dying of some sort of throat cancer. Has romance in it though although plenty of drama.
A thousand years of snow - Main character is sick from heart disease. More comedy than drama but might have enough for you there.

There is another one that I vaguely recall, although it an anime, about a boy who is admitted to hospital with some minor illness (I think he had some sort of STD) but gets better quickly. While in the hospital he meets a girl with a serious heart condition and they become good friends. Quite a lot of drama that I recall. I only watched the anime I am pretty sure there is a manga along with it, although I could be wrong. Hope somebody can remember the title for me otherwise will post when I remember it 😀 .

hope they help.

Renri no Eda
It's quite tragic in the end, a nice short manga too, so if you don't like it, you don't have to suffer much 😀
The Snow Queen
Really nice art and although not completely scanlated, catches attention pretty well...one of the main characters has a disease. It's also a tragic romance.

Double Arts
Half & Half(A short and simple tragic oneshot but I think this definitely has what you're looking for)

Alaeeeee-chan Waves It's me Obin!

I could think of some mangas/one-shots that could fit your criteria..

Present <-- Very emo. one-shot ;_____;.must read this..
Cut the Angel with A Scythe <-- a short but sweet one-shot
DOLL: IC in a Doll <-- There's some characters that are dying..dealing with DEATH
Beautiful people <-- There's some one-shots where the characters are Doomed to die.
Shigeshoushi <-- loads of dying/dead people..and how they deal with death

Crimson Cross <-- One of the girl deals with her terminal illness.

And the works by Momochi Reiko <-- All of her notable works are licensed, deals with issues such as suicides.

and yes! Who could forget Suicide Island?? and also Team Medical Dragon...Those are obvious examples.

@ Dr. Love: I've heard quite a bit about both of those series, and am quite interested in watching them! Thank you so much for the recommendation!

@ Lialah: Thanks! I read a little bit of both of those before, but haven't been able to finish them. That third one sounds very interesting! Thank you for recommending!

@ Juls91: Thank you! I've heard about that one! If it's also known as Sekai no Chushin de, Ai wo Sakebu, I've read the two-volume manga of it.

@ Darkmoore: Th-that sounds awesome. Thank you. __

@ Azalea: Ooh, Renri no Eda! I saw the first chapter when Aerandria started scanlating it, but I totally forgot. Thank you so, so much! I looked up The Snow Queen, and it looks amazing. Thank you so, so much for the recommendation!

@ Jam1: Both of those look really cool! Double Arts sounds interesting... it's so sad that it was discontinued. ;__: I'll have to check it out. Thank you! And Half & Half looks perfect! Thank you for the wonderful recs!

@ Aneste: Ooh... thank you for the reccomendation!

@ OBIN-CHAN: I ADORE YOU. <33333 Thank you so much. ____

Thanks to everyone who has recommended so far! I'm positive I'll find some awesome series through this.

= DOES ANYONE KNOW of any series where the guy is in this sort of situation, rather than the girl? (i.e., BokuKimi) I seem to see a lot of the girl being the weak sickly doomed one. =____=

Aside from the presence of some ecchi, Ai-Ren pretty much fits all of your criteria.

Hoshi no Koe- kinda...but you should read it anyways, it's that good, and it fits your criteria of "doomed" characters, a deep story with love as one of it's theme[so you should know it has romance].

Negative Happy Chain Saw Edge- doomed-to-die characters, but happy ending with romance.

Saikano- Not really a illness but the heroine has a "problem"[read it and find out!] she doesn't let anyone know, and has romance beautifully embedded in the story, a nice balance of war and love, sort of doom-to-die.

Bitter Virgin- Not dying, but suffering from the past.

Nijigahara Holograph- the male character sorta fits your criteria...

welcome! hope I was a little bit of help.

Actually I just thought of another one, although it might be even further off track than the others. If your ok with fantasy and minor shounen-ai elements,
Koori no Mamono no Monogatari features a main male character who is dying from an illness and has virtually given up on his own life. Although that fact is only at the start of the story, but hope it helps. 🙂
