Who approved this! The 2chan thread must have been a land mine and even a Tenchi ending would have had more class. I did not like this manga overall but even i got so angry that i had to quickly write a damning 3/10 review when i found you guys here justifiably bitching and looked at it just now. I can name you porn with more grace!
I get that this manga is ultimately unoffensive when compared to some other publications but still dead . If i were a fan then i would have bough the last one to simply burn it. Let´s go on to Futari no Renai Shoka and the rest of my recommendations in the review shall we?

Edit: @cecropiamoth You are VERY missinformed about: http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Metropolitan_Ordinance_Regard ing_the_Healthy_Development_of_Youths
Read up on it a bit more.

Think harder people!

I've been reading manga for 4 years now. It's obvious to me that one of the ways it often claims our interest is by adding apparently transgressive elements of various sorts to the story. E.g., most famously, Kodomo no Jikan.

Manga is still doing that, as in this manga, but there was a law passed a couple of years ago saying (approximately) that any manga with a love story involving a minor and an adult would have to be sold as "18+", which would mean its selling potential would go WAY down, because it couldn't be sold to teenagers.

Therefore this story couldn't proceed as you wished without breaking the law, and cutting its money-making potential drastically -- so they had to end it.

Money rules, in Japan as here.

Uhh, from what I can see that bill is about the depiction of sexual acts, not romantic feelings (I mean, come on)... and the protagonist does way more of those acts (skinship, etc.) with Narumi than with anyone else. The manga didn't have to show them having sex or anything for them to end up together. I really don't get your point.

Game Over (MIZUTANI Fuka) is also about a business woman and a middle schooler and they got married and it's like the best ending ever. none

It is very difficult to imagine how this story could have proceeded with the adult woman and the boy developing a relationship without the depiction of "sexual or pseudo-sexual acts" between the two. (language of the act).

Even if the mangaka could have "written around" such things, two results would have followed:

1. He would have had to constantly wonder whether he was succeeding in not crossing the line, which would have inhibited his storytelling abilities. This is called the "chilling effect" of censorship in American law, and is a well-known phenomenon.

2. The said law would have undermined the ability of the mangaka to keep that "slightly transgressive" element alive as the story of the "relationship" developed. After all, what could he freely depict -- them going on chaste dates endlessly? I doubt that would have been fun for the readers of the mangaka.

Face with such narrow limitations of his future work, I can see why he dumped the manga (or his editor made him do so).

Wow, so foolish. There's no reason for the manga to have chronicled the progression of their ongoing relationship. Where the heck are you getting this crap? It could easily have ended at the point where their feelings finally meet. With a kiss, a hug, a look, an encounter, a hundred different easily portrayed scenarios. It could even have had an afterward chapter where they *gasp* aren't having sex. They could even start having sex off screen so to speak. Or sex could go without being addressed at all. It doesn't matter. But a thousand better outcomes could have been had than what we got.

Your post in the sexism topic contradicts what you write here but i am back to stop misinformation as many have no ideas what the Bill is about so look at my link above as this concerns us all.
It is ongoing but has no content that would forbid age gap relations or even hard sex scenes. The last one they killed was Imouto Paradise! 2 which i then looked at and it´s (hardcore) incest gang-bang porn. It´s also by a hentai artist while being based on an eroge and it even has a loli in it. So they probably had a field day and the entire magazine looks like porn.
It´s mostly incest and sex on the school grounds the Bill is after and the manga they hung in the past aren´t technically banned. They only would need to be republished as an adult publication which is reasonable but the law is a mess in execution so i can´t support it. Too many loopholes, horrible execution, they don´t care about gorn and so on.
Let´s stick to new stuff past the Bill´s existence and you all can look at all the borderline-H counter in your viewer of choice now to see that underage porn in recent (shonen/shoujo) publications is still going strong. Hunting for new release is frankly a battlefield and i wonder what UNICEF thinks of the Bill as they originally wanted Japan to commit further on a crackdown on child porn. Don´t google Japan´s Dark History here or have a fun on a FBI watch list.

Boku o Tsutsumu Tsuki no Hikari Has a flashback around the time the Bill came to existence where the then middle schooler Rin impregnates his 9 years older fiancé Alice. None cared and part 3 is coming.

Futari no Renai Shoka Also has a middle schooler (at first) who goes for a woman twice his age or MewMan´s choice where they do have sex. These are as inoffensive as you can get.

Then we have all the shoujo series (actually all demographics count with 14-sai no Koi and ...) that focus on Studen x Teacher relations that flood the market. These are an integral part of the lifeblood of the industry as we have 49 pages of them!
Kitto Kawaii Onnanoko Dakara, Principal, Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei (best ending ever contender) or Yasashii Sekai no Tsukurikata all survived the Bill.
Fascinating to see that the politicians didn´t consider this angle when they wrote their carp as this is frankly pretty immoral for a honor based society.

Shogakukan (so much crazy smut) and Akita Shoten (no comment) and ... still vomit out series with hard sex scenes or rape of WAY underage characters in a school setting or on the school grounds proper roll . Thus nothing changed or will change.
I can´t even see loli/shota going away as we are moving into a digital only future and EVERYTHING goes on the web.
What would this industry publish be if you took away the age gaps or the incest or the blood young protagonists in borderline-H (or porn proper) or ....
My favorite manga has graphic child rape (or the recent Wolfsmund), a ton of underage nudity and now a young nudist mermaid and it still won the Tezuka.
How many of his still republished manga have underage sexual relations? Like a lot as Ayako or even his main work Hi no Tori. That one is pretty hardcore with mother X son(s) incest, heaps of (underage) nudity, gore and whatnot else but it´s also as classic as a manga can get. These will still be in publication when i die with no heat on them.

Now look @ your favorite hentai site. Did you notice that 50%-75% of the girls are of high school age or below? Is the Bill going after them? No it´s not. The Toon porn scene would have nothing to publish if the needed to be in collage or beyond as these creatures are just to sexually intimidating for the target demographic.

Finally who said that the series would have to go into an exploration of an explicit sexual relationship? It could have just ended with them becoming a couple in the last chapter as he did with the loli. How hard would it have been to draw 10 pages differently or a time jump could have come next or the author could have remembered that the government decided NOT to ban To Love-Ru Darkness (sold as shrink wrapped 16+ erotica in germany ~Lol) and kept the sex on that level. Yep SJ was under government fire. Or the author could have just committed to the loli relationship and not brought back the original love interest in the least second to undo everything.

If the government would actually crack down on underage nudity/sexuality (which they won´t) then the Eva manga would need to be banned as it has nude 14 year olds in it and Misato liked out Shinji´s mouth towards the end with a promise of sex which was around the Bill´s passing i guess. Also Dragon Ball´s with Goku´s nudity and ... This discussion is frankly more vapid then this series ending but maybe someone learned something.
@Dumber At least i got you to read my post. Lol.
