Quote from Magpie

Just to add an odd little experience in here, I actually read a short book on Manwha (one of those 'how to draw' jobs), and in the into the writer had actually gone and outright attacked Manga fans. I seem to recall something along the lines of "Does your precious Manga have have this kind of heritage? No. Take that, Manga fans!", amongst almost two paragraphs of general bashing. I've seriously no idea how that got published, to be honest(quite unbelievable, really). The little rant at the start was so poorly researched, too

In the past, the Koreans used to have a genuine hatred for all things Japanese. I dunno where it started, but it probably was from wartime days. Only in the past decade was a ban on certain Japanese imports lifted in South Korea. There's a reason why gaming culture in SK is built almost exclusively around the PC, it's becoz they never had consoles like SNES, Famicom or MegaDrive (maybe PS1 also) over there.

When it comes to manga bashing.... rumor has it that there was a huge black market for Jap manga in SK before the ban was lifted (it may not have been a complete manga ban, but many good manga titles back then were 'filtered' out).... this led to the term manhwa being created..... manhwa was actually just called Korean comics before that.... The publishers did borrow some of the qualities which made manga popular, but the heritage part is mostly propaganda.... every culture has it's own arts heritage.... and with Japan and Korea being so close, their so called 'heritages' are probably inter-related.

Just my 2 cents. I can't back this up with real proof.... it's just what I heard from somewhere.

I've read a lot of manga, so much so that I do see a lot of similarities between the ones I read, and I've read a few manwha too. The manwha are new and fresh because you're reading a story from a person who has grown up in different circumstances than the typical mangaka from Japan. So far the only manwha I'm actually enjoying is "Metal Heart" . The other one's I've tried to read I just couldn't finish, "UnbalancexUnbalance" being just one of them.

Personally I think it's because I enjoy the more "gental" way manga are written. Mangaka's tend to put more importance on the individuals feelings. In manwha, they tend to put more importance on the actions.

Call me a big softie, but so far I'm enjoying manga (With all it's plot similarities) more than manwha. But I shall keep finding and reading manwha that peek my interests. Like the Japanese say; "You will open many oysters before you find the perfect pearl."

I enjoy both, I don't see why you need to put down one of them when you can like both. I barely see a difference in manwha and manga other then settings, and art styles because in the end both usually use the lives of people to entertain others even if their lives may be fictional.

I'll try to give you a different answer.

I think that the reason you feel this way could be that manhwa are usually more "seinen-ish" than manga (at least in ratio). A really good percentage of manga are instead shounen and shoujo. I don't know how old are you, but if you're looking for more "adult" series, you'll probably enjoy a good percentage of the titles available for manhwa, but I can't say the same for manga. So I think it's just that the manhwa market is more addressed to you than the manga market (but I could be totally wrong, that's only my impression of a foreigner reader). Even the shounen manhwa are more seinen-ish than shounen manga. To me, there is an abyss between Ares and Naruto, even if they are both shounen (in my head they are not the same genre). You will rarely see in a manga the good guy who finishes off an harmless opponent (and in many manga you also don't see the good guy ever finish off an enemy).

I also like many manhwa like you. But I don't think the same as you in terms of quality. From the cover and the review I had a huge expectation from Black God, but it never got good imho and I dropped it very fast (even if it's from one of the most famous manhwaka). I also dislikes Id. But if you ask me which is my fav shounen, I'll surely answer Ares.

In the end I suggest you to try some "non-conventional" manga (I don't know how to call them lol), like Kurozuka or Kurogane. Or "tragedy shounen manga" like Chrno Crusade or Vampire Juujikai (even if this one it's not a shounen). I think maybe you will find the kind of manga you're looking for.

From my experience, I would have to say the art detail is drawn much better and it tends to give a more adult environment. Most of us are past the kiddy type stories with all types of corny cliches or at least don't want to have an entire story based around those ideas. My only problems with Manwhas is that Korean names are horrid. Sorry if I sound culturally biased, but that's just my opinion. I think it makes very good manwha hard to read and I have put some down for that reason. It's a terrible reason, I know, but it's one of my pet peeves.

Agreed. Outside of seeing who the mangaka (manwhaka for manwha?) and the fact that manwha is read left to right, the distinction between the two is barely noticeable. Personally, for some reason for the manwha I've read (Shin Angyo Onshi, Threads of Time, King of Hell, and Ragnarok) the only distinction between the art styles is the attention to hair 😐 . And honestly, aside from Shin Angyo Onshi, I haven't come across any manwha that I would include in a "Stuff you must read before you die" type of list. This could just come from my lack of exposure to the manwha world, but that's just my two cents.

It's not 😛
I like manga more because sometimes the art in manhwa is not to my tastes.

Manwha shoujo has horrid character models. I'm not a fan of hideous people being passed off as "beautiful". And I find most of the manwha that has a modern day, realistic setting to be uninteresting. I do like several of the fantasy manga, but most manwha aren't any more or less appealing than manga to me.

What you are reading are all popular manwha. Also, some of the artists for some of them are the same people, so you're being fed the same art style. Then again, different people have different tastes... some like manwha more and some like manga more.

Hmmm... manhwa: when it's good, it can be very good if the manhwaga has a very good in-depth and innate understanding about love, life, psychology and other aspects or has a good sense of humor and is able to craft a story. And some of my favs are Dokebi bride, Mana and a few others(supernatural stories and otherwise). The storytelling is strong, witty and they often don't spend too much time on the drama or trying to set goals too high that they can't attain.

When it's bad, it can be overtly ambitious and be chocked full of drama. Drama can be useful as a tool for adding excitement to the storyline but when things get too dramatic in order to move the plot or characters, it becomes a disappointment since it's very hard to explain such events well enough to make them natural or flow with the story. And I think I've read quite a few manhwa where an overdose of ambition and/or even drama completely killed the story and where it would have made a far better and more comprehensive story by being a bit more simple. Also, the lack of narration can be a problem when said author doesn't know how to transit scene from scene well enough or doesn't know how to express the characterisation in other manners.

The art? It can be really good if you can draw negatives well and are strong on designs.

On the downside: I think a lot of it almost looks the same 'cos many go for the same "ambitiously gorgeous stuff or clean-cut but beautiful stuff" and unfortunately, for quite a few artists, the characters are so beautiful, they're stone-cold without any emotions or they just can't carry such a style well enough.

So far, I haven't read enough manhwa to decide which industry is better: manhwa or manga?

They're both around the same to me.Seen some good ones, and some bad ones for each. But the top spots in my book still go to mangas though I like to read manhwa occasionally.

I haven't read enough manwha to say if it is better or worse than manga. All the manwha I've read has been pretty good, but I've noticed (at least for the ones I have read), the artistic style is really flowery. If that is good or bad is up to the person. I personally don't care too much if it is flowery, but I don't prefer it.

another strange thing, Ive read Aflame Inferno, Banya, Black God, Change Guy, ChulRangYulJun, Freezing, iD, Immortal Regis, Shin Angyo Onshi, The Thread of the TIme, Unbalanced x Unbalanced, Yureka.

none in those series having spineless/idiotic(naruto is belong in this category)/whim/loser main char. Which I found alot in mangas.
