something like basara

basara is one of my favorite mangas, I'm really happy that it was such a long manga but I've finished reading it.
So, does anyone else know of a manga like basara?
What I'm looking for should be a manga in which the protagonist is fighting in a war or rebelling against a country. The protagonist doesn't have to be leading the rebellion/war (like in basara) but could be an important component in it like in red river, or operation liberate men. It should also contain drama and while it doesn't have to contain romance I'd still appreciate it if there were romantic elements. The time frame doesn't matter it can be historical or not (operation liberate men is a fantasy not historical). The longer the series the better.

Uhm, I didn't read Basara, but judging from your comment maybe you can try:

red river = anatolia story
which I've read and mentioned in my explaination as to what kind of manga I'm looking for. What I liked most about basara was the concept of an unlikely hero emerging and leading the struggle against the oppressive rulers.

I second Ares
Let's see manga about wars...well, there's Hellsing where the "war" (if you can call it that) starts sometime around the 5th volume.
Shina Dark seems to be going in that direction
Hoping for Immortal Regis to have a war between the four clans...
You might want to try ChunRangYulJun...though I haven't read it yet, the description somewhat matches your request.
If you can afford to or have the time to find and download anime:
I really recommend you watch the anime Utawarerumono which matches your description almost perfectly.
Then there's also Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion which I also recommend the anime
Then there's the Gundam series (I recommend Wing, Seed and 00)
And then there's Zoids Chaotic Century...again anime
EDIT: Forgot, there's also Last Exile...yeah, it's an anime
And I'm going a bit off topic here but if you've got a Playstation and Playstation 2 you might wanna try out the Suikoden games and Final Fantasy Tactics (highly recommended)

About this, then probably Shin Angyo Onshi is the one which fits the most that I've read, at least in the second part of it (so maybe you have to wait a little until it becomes what you want). But it's really good so I suggest you to give a try.
Maybe also Watashi no Messiah-sama for some aspects, but I'm not so fond of it.

OH! Sorry I read over that >.<
But another good one would be Legend of Nereid but it's a manhwa ^^
I second Saver too.

Ares
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Saver is about rebellion, but it is horrible if you ask me.
