Hi,

another post just reminded me of a search request I had since some time. I searched through the older topics and hope that I didn't overlooked the same question. Honestly, I have very few ideas what terms to search for 😔

I'm looking for manga that cover the whole life of the protagonist(s) or a huge part of it. Not just the school time (like Hikaru no Go) or a single timeskip in between but ideally from the childhood till the very end. All demographics and genre are fine. Hetero/Yaoi relationships are highly welcomed.

Examples that I've enjoyed a lot are Complex (Shounen-Ai, follows a couple through 80 years of their life) and 20th Century Boys (Seinen, jumps forth and back over several decades involving many people). I surely have read more but it's late at night and my memory isn't fully working anymore.

I find the flow of time and the biographical aspect very fascinating. Something like Kurozuka would work to some extend too. The couple isn't aging but it lives through many centuries. Though, I prefer non-immortal lifes but the relationship part here was quite 'active' and that's a story element that I like a lot 😀

This might be completely different from what your expecting, but i recommend Major. Its a baseball manga/anime (4 26 episode seasons out for the anime season 5 coming soon). But it starts out with Goro as a kid watching his dad play in Japan's major leagues then his little league career, then middle school, then high school, then america's minor leagues. You can really see how is experiences as a kid shaped him. The plot is much deeper than any other sports manga/anime.

Even if you dont particularly like baseball i would highly recommend at least the first season. The main focus is not really baseball (it turns more to baseball in the second half of the first season) But definitely give it a shot.

The manhwa Princess has that, it is a romantic tragedy covering 3 generations of love and lost. But hmm from your examples this might not be your cup of tea XD

I second Death Note though that technically doesn't cover the whole lifetime, Light doesn't start as a little kid but a teenager. The only others I can think of which cover a sigificant period are

Rurouni Kenshin Flashes back to Kenshin's childhood, has a whole arc about a part of his youth, current story takes place in his 20s and then the ending shows what happens in the future. (Been a while since I read it so can't remember exact ages but it covers most of his life I think)
Count Cain and it's sequel Godchild though the story jumps back and forth between Cain as a child and Cain at 17.
Nijigahara Holograph covers the stories of several people over a decade.
Apothecarius Argentum flashes back a lot to the childhood of Argent and Primula
Vampire Knight Does the same

That's all I can think of that kinda fit.

Berserk and Vinland saga tell from childhood and on...

Eden tells lifelong stories of some people. (has leaps, but gives quite a lot of details of these peoples' lifes).

Emma Emma Bangaihen- also has many background stories, some I thought were better than the main plot/couple.

I like that kind of stories... Although I haven't read any that covered full life.

Nana, while it isn't really what you're looking for covers part of both protagonists' lives. The first chapter starts with Nana's (Hachiko's) high school life but the story mostly takes place in both Nanas' early twenties. There are some flashbacks to teenage years and in the later volumes flash-forwards to a few (~five?) years later. Either way I highly recommend it.

Maison Ikkoku spans a few years, but no flashbacks, timeskips or other. Still a nice slice-of-life type manga.

Buddha, it encapsulates the entire life of the actual Buddha, but in a fictional way.

Kiichi!! will be according to the description.

Jeebus crap, I read Complex because of this topic, and I have not cried that hard at a manga since Let Dai and Battle Royale before that.

Anyway. I think Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou sorta vaguely qualifies, and it's insanely good, so I'll rec it.
