And shounen isn't really aimed at so young kids its more aimed at 14 or so not like 5 years old. Ummm ok well maybe 7, I'm not saying that their the same show just that they are aimed at the same demographic.

I've always understood shounen manga to have a targeted demographic of 10-17 year olds with seinen aimed at people between 18 and 30 years of age (with roughly the same ranges for shoujo and josei). There are specific children's manga aimed at children under ten. I honestly don't think your average 7 year old would really even understand most of the plot to Naruto. Unless it's anime filler episode, then they'll be fine.

I vaguely remembering reading somewhere that shounen is traditionally targeted at ~9-14, but I'm not totally sure. Honestly, now I'm curious if there is an "official" age target...
All the same, the target age should be irrelevant. Regardless of who it's aimed at, it still has the same set of cliches and stereotypes, just like any of the other demographics has their own.

I love action shounen but there are really few to be good nowadays, claymore and kurohime are some of the one i read and enjoy, there's d.gray man who is awesome too but that's about it for japanese manga, the best shounen nowadays are korean with unbalance x2, immortal regis, ares etc...

I like shounen... but yeah there are certain things that piss me off a bit ~

Such as the need to turn every battle into a tournament like 1on1, even though it's a so called 'Fight to the death'...
Also the complete lack of logic sometimes. (Weird & unnessesary plot twists, the side characters that somehow just keep catching up as well >_> etcetera..)

That being said there's a lot of difference among shounen manga, just as there is among other 'genres'. I generaly can't stand most shoujo with all the pink stuff and fuzzy bubbles but there have been some shoujo manga I've truly enjoyed.

I'll take shounen over shoujo any day. Just gives me something to look forward to - shounen usually has such a nice, fast pace, I adore it.

I don't hate shounen, but I do despise shounen cliches, the most irritating one being "omg you can never kill no matter what, always save the enemy after you beat them" and the "no one dies/deus ex machina". These two cliches are pretty connected to each other you know cough bleach cough.

I stopped reading bleach for a long time. Also Naruto I understand your hatred.

I don't really hate shounen for comedy or romance but when it comes to Action I kind of end up pulling hairs out.
I've never been a fan of reading a manga where after 50+ chapters you suddenly notice that everyone is able to walk on water or fly and fight in mid air. I want some sense of realism or explanation for action and so on. Probably the most I can tolerate is just classifying it as magic as long as nobody ends up flying around in robots or the sort. For instance To Aru Majutsu no index is in my book tolerable and has a lot more meaning, but by the 200th Bleach episode I see everyone fighting in mid-air as if the artist forgot to draw the ground because I don't recall the last time you're able to stop yourself from being thrown in mid-air.

Yeah after the Bontou series they began to walk on air that was annoying.

I generally like shounen mangas, but I really don't like the cliches that comes from shounen (ie-fanservice, cowardly/idiotic protagonists, repetitive fights, etc.).

Also, if it has a good storyline and a likeable cast, I'll read it.

Otherwise, I'll pass.

I do like shounen mangas with a difference- but hate the cliches and the harems- every genre and field have some unlikable stuff but not enough to hate...I do dislike certain types of shounen besides harem and too cliched ones, the ones with baby-faced girls and the childhood tomboyish desperate female friends and neko or any animalistic females...But besides that shounens like FMA, Kekkaishi etc are gems to me ..
