A poster's comment made me think:
If a person draws manga but isn't Japanese are they still consider a mangaka? Same with manga: if someone draws manga but it does not come from Japan is it still consider 'manga'? Are there any terms to refer to this type of stuff?
Not sure if this makes any sense...
Mams eh? 😁
If it done in the manga style (black and white, right to left, etc.) , then I don't see why not call it a manga and call yourself a mangaka.
If we get too picky about these things, then "comics" should only mean American comics...and "comics" from any other country would need to be reffered to under a different name @_@ (and different spellings wouldn't count)

It makes sense to call someone who draw manga, a mangaka.
We aren't calling them mangaka because they are Japanese, we are calling them that because of the style of their comic.
Well that's the same thing I thought as well. But since mangaka is the Japanese word to describe someone who draws Japanese comics (manga) would you still call someone that if they aren't Japanese and aren't in Japan? Sigh, I lost myself here, I know what I'm asking but not sure how to ask it...

In all (almost) 2 decades of my life, I have never heard of any other form of the word for comic in any other language besides Manga and Manwha. This is not counting different spellings such as komik etc. of course 🙄

Yes, I would call an American who draw Japanese mangas a mangaka. It's not limited by race, it's defined by their profession. Like......Samurai.......or cowboy.........YES, you can have an asian cowboy. Not all of them are white.
And I have no idea what tsuto is trying to say....

Oh, I got a question...
When was Baka-Updates Manga founded?
I know that on the About Us page it says July 20th, 2002... but when I asked a previous question regarding the page someone said the information referred to the sistersite Baka-Updates or something of that nature.
If it weren't for the gutter, my mind would be homeless.

Well my first thought was...actually you don't want to know. But I think it's just a famous line from the movie There Will Be Blood. Maybe there's a deeper meaning behind it, I'm not sure. 😕
