Can anyone explain why visual novels are so expensive, even though they are pretty cheap to make?
Sometimes it makes me feel no longer bad about downloading them.
Depnds on where you live. I can well imagine in Japan there's an overwhelming demand for visual novels (judging by the world god only knows). I suspect the producers can simply afford to sell at such prices there.
Outside of Japan, especially in the western world, it could be that the retailers are still unfamiliar with the product and want to be paid extra for the risk they think they take by purchasing it. The then resulting additional costs for the producer are passed on to the price.
Just theories though.

Depends what your definition of "cheap" is.
I was comparing it to other games that have huge teams and take 2+ years to make and sell for like $40-60 and I see Fate/Stay Night for $78.

Well, FS/N is special. It's only one of the most popular visual novels ever, so it's not surprising that it costs that much even at its current age 🙄
You're more paying for its fame rather than the actual game though...xD
But hey, it's a great game, so it's worth it. =D

Yeah I don't the kind of money to get it though. I will be saving for the Tsukihime re-release. Though I won't be able to play it till it's translated like four years later. 😢
What does "encoding" actually entail in the whole fansubbing process?

The encoding process is where a person makes the final product that you actually watch. It's a blend of the raw video, the subtitles, styling, any After Effects stuff...all into your typically avi or mkv video file. Some of the details involved are correct video/audio compression (and apparently many so called "encoders" such at that) and usage of filters (for colors and other things)

You could always get the fan-translation patch. As long as you've bought the game, I don't think you're doing anything illegal...
Which reminds me...I should get a copy of Tsukihime as well...>_>

There's no guarantee the patch will work on the re-make of Tsukihime that's still in the works...

Now that I think about it, if the rumors do come true, then there's going to be a Satsuki route which wasn't in the original...

Oh, I got a question and none of my roomies are around for me to ask. So, my Xbox 360 is being possessed. It's got 3 red blinking lights going on. What do I do or where do I take it to get fixed? Think I can just take it back to where I bought it? Where do you take these kinds of things to get repaired....

It's called the red ring of death. I think Microsoft said that they would repair all Xbox 360s with them. It might take a while though. My friend waited for a month after mailing it in.

Your 360 unfortunately has the red rings of death. Depending on when you bought it, you should be able to contact microsoft and request them to fix it as part of your warranty, which they extended sometime ago for instances of the red rings. If your warrant has been voided though, I guess you'll have to scour the web for possible fixes or send it somewhere for repairs.
