Anime Poll
New poll suggestion came from member Dubby, who submitted the idea today~
Simple poll, so no need to explain it.
Previous Poll:
Question: What makes a manga?
Choices:
Art - votes: 1396 (19.9%)
Plot - votes: 3199 (45.6%)
Characters - votes: 1637 (23.3%)
Originality - votes: 743 (10.6%)
Popularity - votes: 36 (0.5%)
There were 7011 total votes.
The poll ended: March 29th 2008
So the interesting plot wins~ I think I should have put stuff in like "humor" and some other choices, oh well...

If you would add stuff like humor, than I would say that "humor" or "psycho/twisted personality" would definitely win ^^ *just read some topics on the forums*

Art should win! lol if I want plot i'll read a book.

That's a bit insulting to the mangakas out there. Art is important, but if there's no plot, there's no interest. It sounds like you buy their manga just to look at the pictures. If you just want to look at pictures, you should just buy a picture book. No offense, I also decide by art, but plot too.

I was making a half hearted joke. I thought that art and plot would be side to side but if people picked plot over art I guess they must like manga plots more than plots in novels.
I wonder how many people would read novels over manga and why. I myself would read manga over novels for the art. The art for me is what drives the plot.

Isn't a volume of manga probably cheaper than a picture book? I think even a kids soft-covered picture book costs more than a volume of manga.
But don't people pick up manga to cure boredom or be entertained? There's no guarantee that great art = great manga but I guess looking at good art is comforting if the overall manga experience from that volume or series is lukewarm, rather than one cringing at the art.

I don't watch any anime these days outside of One Piece. used to watch a lot more a few years ago, though.

My answer would be "if the anime is good".
But since that's not an option, I voted "if the manga was good".

my personal opinion: imagination!!
instead of watching each move on film, you have still pictures where you can just stare at the amazement (if the manga is good) of the drawings and what you think is going on.
basically theres a lot more freedom to thinking, especially the black and white. I like most of my manga mostly in black n white, a few color pages would be nice but too much is just a waste of ink.

The result is SO wrong...
Any comic or other media can have the plots manga has, but what makes manga unique is the Art.
Just think how you would describe manga to someone who doesn't have a clue on what manga is.
Something like:"Well, it's sort of a comic from japan mostly. but it's drawn in a unique way that sets it apart from western comic."

The art isn't always better or different in manga. It is an important factor, but if that was all that was different I wouldn't read it. Just as I don't read western comics in general. The way the story and characters play out is different and more entertaining (for me).
I voted on characters since they are just as interesting as the ones I read about in novels.
As for the new one. Only for specific genres, if the series wasn't good enough I wouldn't watch it either of course. But I've already read it once already, so I would only go for things that would be interesting to see again in an animated format. That is a genre I define myself. ^-^
