Good but not one of the best

It was a good read because it tried to actually give us a storyline. The main character has an interesting personality (but sometimes he becomes annoying)... I can see the author was trying to show an angsty kind of ambience, and somehow was able to because of the dark personality of the main chara, but plot wise it left me empty. There's a potential but it felt like the author wasn't able to completely grasp it.
My major problem with this is the ending. Totally unexpected but really?... I didn't even feel sad at the ending because on how taken aback I was lol.
A manga with a potential but sadly did not reach it.

This is definitely one of my favorites out there. The story is quite interesting and keeps you hooked throughout the series. There were some volumes I didn't like as much as some, but I still kept reading. This series really brought out the whole scale of human emotions: I laughed, smiled, was angry, furious, anxious, heart-broken... you name it. I love happy endings, but sometimes it gives a greater impact to not get it. As much as I cried and felt that poor Ryuu had to go through too much, that's what made this story so good. It was tragic, but that's how Kodaka-sensei wanted to picture the world of yakuza.
Totally recommend! Just beware of the tragedy ahead... you may find crying yourself to sleep later.

Mostly for the way the art style changed wonky throughout the years (anatomy went to hecka later on in the later volumes i.e. heads bigger than the bodies). I'm just frustrated because I loved the style it was drawn earlier; however, maybe past chapter 17 it'll start getting better again, is what I'm hoping.
It had a good promise. I loved that the two characters were pretty much men; that kind of ballsy attitude that doesn't take shit. HOWEVER, later on, Ryuuji really doesn't...act like this. His entire toughness deteriorates the more he falls into a "relationship" with Araki (and it don't even make much sense--it's all just implied, well
I'm a bit disappointed. I was hoping for this really great yakuza dark themed one, and then it became a big gay fest (which I guess was what I was looking for, but it lost so much of that first chapter objective development).
Not to say there aren't cute moments in here (and I know I'm loving the yakuza elements), but I'm very iffy about the entire thing.

in the past as Hitoshi and looking after a child Ryuuji, and that kind of love just continued onto the future. All that toughness goes to Araki in an astounding need to make him Big Badass (TM), which isn't bad, but Ryuuji needing to be saved all the time is getting on my nerves when he was self-sufficient enough to kill the dudes in prison.

Also I get the thing why his sister is always like IT'S YOUR FAULT, or like, STAY AWAY FROM US, but I just feel like the way the mangaka chooses to do it makes it feel like it's for the angstfest. Literally when he's not visiting his brother, he doesn't think much about it, Araki is the one who makes everyone better, etc.

This kind of art normally isn't my thing, especially for a yaoi manga... but I tried the first couple of pages and got hooked.
I think the best way to describe this manga is INTENSE. lol. They all seem to have a mildly psycho or vicious side (some more than others). There's also some interesting power dynamics between some characters that I did not see coming.

This story is amazing. I loved Kizuna too but the darker ambience here fits the Yakuza theme better and I prefer Ryuuji to Sagano Kai cos he's just manlier I guess. The main couple is so touching and they had me rooting for them from the word go. I prefer happy (or at least happy for now) endings but I still love these characters so much that I have to give the story the credit that it's due.
The plot is gripping and engaging and it has a bit of everything. Really pulled at my heart strings but it was funny and exciting too! I stumbled on that spoiler as well and now I'm pissed cos I can read it myself. *cries* Perhaps I should start learning Japanese?

So i've only been able to read up to chapter 16 as that is all thats available through websites so far *sob* but i've been blown away. At first what shocked me most was the art. The quality and style of the art is amazing for the time this manga was first released. Aside from the art the story is absolutely addictive. I couldn't stop reading. The characters, the plot, the flash backs - all of it has left me wanting more. Im truly impressed :3 I'll review this once i can read the last couple of chapters - i think there are 2 left and since some clever person posted the ultimate spoiler i already sort of know what happens *growl*
Just a hint. The spoiler tag is there for a good damn reason so use it!

I love the story and the author as usual does an excellent job. Hated the way hitoshi died, he was to powerful to be killed by some weak ass. Then to have Hibiki get the dragon in the end just infuriated me. But stiil a good read look into the continuation. which is kizuna.

Amazing amazing amazing! Not only is it addicting the love between the two main characters is sweet and all of the men there are very manly. This story is twisted and wonderful and it is a definate page turner! You won't be unsatisfied.
This series might be as good or even BETTER than Kizuna

It's amazing that this series isn't more popular. If people liked Kizuna then HtoR should be right up their alley! It has a more serious bent to it than Kizuna which had a very sweet puppy love aspect to it. However, I always thought that Masa should have had his own series. Now he has a brother! Can the world get more perfect. I also like that Ryuu is "manlier" than Kai (whom I like very much) IMO. Physically, Kai was drawn almost on a different scale than Masa, and while his character was well developed, I personally wanted to see a Masa pairing with a lover who was more his equal in both stature and psyche. Hopefully the Hitoshi/Ryuu pairing will be more satisfying in that sense. Ryuu's intelligence and emotional maturity manifested themselves well in vol3. (don't want to spoil the story for those who haven't read it) and I hope that he is not marginalized as the series progresses. I wish HtoR was licensed in English, or Chinese, or any romance language except Romanian!
There should be a campaign to get this series licensed or barring that scanlated more consistently. I mean no offense to the kind-hearted and hardworking scanlators currently working on this series and am utterly filled with gratitude to them for introducing me to such a wonderful work.
