Eyeshield is a childish manga. The characters could only exist in a comic book and it lacks authenticity.

But that's what makes a manga interesting. Even if the character are unrealistic, in their core they are very relatable. To some extent, everyone enjoys seeing the little guy become strong enough to stand up to the big guy, and that's exactly what Eyeshield 21 is.

Sure, the whole "chase your dreams! don't give up" routine has been done before, but with the beautiful artwork and compelling story telling, I assure you, not one part of the series will leave you dissatisfied.

as the last person said.......good forom strt to middle....then....i just finished it..cuz it wasnt tht bad.........

I dont really hate the aspect ofconstantly more stronger enemies...and the protagonist gaining another Super saiyan level...but seiously.how much can this go on for........

and seriously the background stereotypes.were funny in the beginnig especially when it was about the US...but after tht it all died

Now, I'm a big American Football fan. I know all the rules, and watch every game that I can. When I first found out that there was a manga about American Football, I was excited yet curious to whether or not the manga would actually do it justice. The answer to that is that it get the rules right most of the time, but whenever they mess up, it's always one of the rules that even a newcomer would pick up if they sat down and watched a game.

Now don't get me wrong, I liked this manga a lot. But there were certain parts of it that would make anyone who knows the rules scratch their head in confusion. Since I don't want to crowd up this comment with the examples and reasons why, I'll put two examples in spoiler tags that I can think of right now that made me confused as to why they didn't know it already.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
1) When Panther put the ball in his hand over the goal line when that huge dust cloud came up, the referee was about to signal a touchdown. But Panther pulled it back saying that Sena got him before he could cross the goal line and it was decided that it wasn't a touchdown. Even though Panther says he didn't cross the goal line, the referee can't take his word for granted because he couldn't see anything due to the dust cloud. The first thing the referee saw after the dust cloud dissipated was Panther having the ball cross the goal line, which should be counted as a touchdown no matter what Panther says.

2) During the Deimon/Bando game, Kotarou lands the kickoff just out of bounds right by Deimon's endzone and they have it to where the place where it landed out of bounds is where Deimon had to start. The ball is actually supposed to be placed at the 40 yard line because in went out of bounds during the kickoff.

Now as you can see, the title pretty much tells you what I thought of this manga. Personally, I think the manga started to go downhill a bit right when the Kanto Tournament arc started.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
During that arc, I noticed two things. One was that the four games Deimon played always took at least 20 or more chapters to finish. Now seeing how there were other matches before and after those four that were shorter, it seems that they were needlessly stretching out those matches (One of the best examples is the Ojo/Deimon match which went on for 29 chapters). The second thing is that even though the games were good enough to make you want to read them again, they were also anticlimactic. When Deimon beat Ojo, I noticed in that game and the Deimon/Shinryūji game that Deimon was trailing at halftime but then came back and won. When I noticed that, it became disappointing because when they trailed in the other two games with Hakushū and Teikoku, I already knew they were going to come back and win. Even with these two reasons, the games were still enjoyable to read, just not as enjoyable as they could have been.

So, when the Kanto arc ended, most of us thought it would be over...

...until the World Youth Cup arc rose its' ugly head. I can't speak for anyone else, but this was one of the worst arcs I've read in ANY manga. It was like more like a bad fanfic or some "What If?" story than actual canon. The stereotypes, the uselessness of every country except America and Japan, the constant hyping up of America being the team no one can beat (Making it more than obvious that Japan was going to give them a tough challenge), and even the end result were all horrible. I agree with most people that say it should have ended with Deimon winning the Christmas Bowl.

In conclusion, this is a manga that's entertaining and funny from beginning to end (The only manga I've read that's funnier is One Piece), but it suffers from the constant misuse of basic American Football rules and poor writing from the Kanto arc onwards.

I love Eyeshield, I think it's funny and hilariously unrealistic. Artimidorus' review was about right I think, except I'm going to give it a 10 because I enjoy it so much. The art is kind of great too.
Maybe I think it's so incredible because I read it at the same time as -shudders- Rosario+Vampire. I think that could have made anything look good.
Although I think the racism of the NASA coach may have leaked into everybody who talks about Panther, because every comment about him is followed up with "as only a black man can". I mean even when he's being talked about it's "Panther the black man".
It just seemed a little... unneccessary alot of the time.

But anyway, I love Eyeshield and it's a definite 10. Hope it ends soon though... I mean the world cup really is just dragging it out.

people talk about the series being unrealistic, of course it is, but most of the things are just some moves that are made out to be unrealistic.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
First of all, the "devilbat ghost", which is just a cool name for a cross step, and artimidorus commented on turning back time, which is basicly just a step back, which american footballplayers might do in an actual game. So why is it so unrealistic? Also the fact that panther can run faster than sena or the other players, and surpass their limits, is also possible, because black people do have more elastic muscle, and their bone structure is different. And the comment about the beard is of course stupid, there are lots of people with beards at the age of 17. However I do agree with the strength of gaou and the american dude, that is really unrealistic, but it doesn't make the entire series bad. Also the fact that a dude can jump 7 meters without a sweat is a bit unrealistic. BTW What force field are you talking about? there are no force fields, they are just the radius that the catcher can catch the ball.

Now why i like the series, the first 60 chapters were a ten, but after that I think the comedy has slowed down a bit, and it has become more of a sports manga, also hiruma isn't as fun anymore, although he is a great character, I also like musashi and tetsuma joe. Well, anyways the art is decent as well, good characters, decent comedy nice story,
Spoiler (highlight to view)
although I have to admit that the world cup gives of a wibe of just making the story continue. For example all the games have just been told in 1 chapter, except for the game against america,
it feels like he just wanted to make it continue, so I'll have to maybe lower my rating later on, but we'll see

Should have ended

Spoiler (highlight to view)
While I liked this series up to the Christmas Bowl, it should have ended after that.. it is now dragging, and repeating the exact same thing as the early parts of the series, but with new people. Running at the speed of light, slowing down time with the runs, bypassing all "human limitations" that are only limitations until you meet a young black man who shrugs at the limits. ~_~

And, I don't mind unrealistic manga until it reaches PoT, Captain Tsubassa levels, which this one has. Strong enough to tear a car in half, and he is only 17, and then he gets beat down by another 17 year old guy with a beard, women on each arm, drinking expensive alchohol, and who wasn't even trying? It is insane, and the series should have ended on a higher note after the Christmas Bowl, and just shown a "Where are they now" chapter to finish it. If the NFL could have even the weakest member of this High School Football team, that guy would lead whatever team he was on into nothing but an undefeatable eternal championship team.
I quite expect the next Arc to be "High School Football Players.. In Space!" Will Sena run so fast that he turns time backwards, only to be beaten by Panther running backwards while sleeping? Will the two big guys use their pinky fingers, and destroy the invading Armada from the "Amerikan" universe, who is coming to spit on the Japaneese universe? Just wait and see, because we already have people who fly, create force fields... and.. dear Lord! We are reading Air Gear on a Football field!!!

Spoiler (highlight to view)
To amishmies - now who is the stupid one? No 17 year old has a beard like that guy, and you would be ignorant to believe otherwise. http://www.onemanga.com/Eyeshield_21/315/18-19/ - You SERIOUSLY have EVER seen a 17 year old looking like that? Give me a break. I am not going to go back and find where they use the force fields, or they fly or anything to defend the obvious truth for you, dude. I pointed out him, not the other dozens with beards and stuff, which you seemed to blantantly ignore. I will say though, the "radius he can catch a ball" being in a 50x50 sqft. area around him, and nothing can pass or go near... that qualifies as a "force field" - ie: An inpenetrable bubble surrounding something.
Updated for amishmies - Put in spoiler, because (I assume a mod) put my entire comment in one. ah well. So my update is the second block. smile

lol, this is a manga man, you just don't give it a low rating because it's unrealistic. Actually, if you want to see a real unrealistic sports manga, go read PoT. bigrazz
Anyway just the existance of a character like Hiruma in the manga makes my rating instant 10.
it's my favourite sports manga after Slam Dunk. I highly recommend both. bigrazz

i don't understand the point people try to make about this manga being unrealistic...
If this manga is realistic about high/middle school football level.. then this going to be so freaking super boring... end of story..

Edit: it getting a bit unrealistic.. even for a manga.. but the story is still awesome..

Well, it's been said by previous comments once again. As they say, it's a very good manga and while unrealistic for an actual football game, especially on a middle/high school level, it's VERY funny and only kinda serious. Maybe for younger audiences but still something I would suggest to everybody. Again VERY funny. I personally don't like sports mangas too much but this one is pretty good.
