At first, I didn't really like this manga. I skimmed through the first couple of volumes when they came out from Shojo Beat, and read the chapters from the magazine when I got my hands on it, and though I really liked Paradise Kiss, this series unsettled me. I guess it's because in this manga, nobody gets a clear-cut happy ending. Things always happen and circumstances change; Hachi falls in and out of love, and as I read it, in the beginning, it always gave me this sense of unease. I love shoujo, and happy endings (even though the sappiness and innocence is really annoying sometimes), and I love romance, so I saw (and maybe still see) myself almost as a version of Hachi. The things she said when she was in art college really struck true to me, because I knew exactly the same things she felt--that you saw guys as guys, and not as human beings, and that was why your relationships didn't work out.
Since then (which was maybe a year or two ago), I've gotten over that problem. But reading about Hachi and Nana when they seemed to be having so many problems reminded me too much of myself, in an unpleasant, maybe even embarassing way. Then I recently found volumes 4 and 3 in the library here, and got a few issues of Shoujo Beat, and Hachi's relationship with Takumi really interested me, because I really, really wanted to see her get happy. And now I'm obsessed.. Ah, maybe I knew from the beginning that I'd get this way? Perhaps that's why I stayed away.. and of course, now I'm staying up until 4 in the morning reading Nana instead of writing my papers.
But the complexity and angst of this manga is amazingly realistic (even if the situation itself doesn't seem so), and I can really emphasize with these characters like few other manga I've ever read. Plus the art is gorgeous, as usual.
So, I offer this prayer- please be happy, Nana, Hachi!

This manga is the best work of Yazawa Ai, I think. I started to read this manga only, because I read, that NANA was the most selled manga of 2003 in Japan. I thought: "Oh, that must be good..." And when I read the first pages, I was dependent on Nana immediatly! My fave characters are Nana, Hachi, Nobu, Shin, Ren and Yasu. And Layla, of course! I love Nobu, since he realised his feelings for Hachi! The art is typical Yazawa Ai...(- -)...
But the story is unique and great. It's my first Josei manga... hehe. In the relationships of Nana-Ren; Hachi-Shoji; Hachi-Nobu and hachi-Takumi you see, that this is a Josei manga... I love it. It's one of my absolutly favourite manga!

Really really good.
it`s epic, the characters are not only clichees, but have many sides.
Gripping with a feeling of sadness all over it. There is always Hachiko`s voice over it commenting puzzlingly, with a very sad undertone from the future.
