Description
On the first day of Shima's new job he met a man with a hangover in the elevator. That was his first meeting with his new boss, Togawa. Though Togawa seemed rude and cross, Shima was drawn to the kindness beneath his rough facade. Both men harbor a painful past but unlike Togawa, who was open with his feelings, Shima seems unable to move on.

It was a decent reading. Good drawings. The plot was banal, characters were boring and boring was also the manga itself, because of its slowness. It was also a little too depressing, to me. But... it wasn't horrible. Give it a try if you have free time and/or if you want to read something not too complicated.

Author takes her time to build up the characters and storyline. Although the boxing can be confusing, she makes it up with her down-to-earth speeches. Artwork takes some time to get used to but once you get familiar, she'll take u into her world. Can't get enough of Yoneda Kou's masterpiece!

.............. but the story is unbelievably perfect. Not 'Epic' as in out of the box or unique, but perfect, and so so realistic. Everything wrapped up nicely. Interesting characterizations. Love this to bits.

It was romantic and really hot. Characters are cute. I liked the extra story at the end and wished that was developed more. I'll give it a 10 because it was everything I want in a romance plus a decent ending.

i have some problems with it, especially with the amount of background angst -- that's a whole lot of drama crammed into one volume; a bit too much for me. but when i push my inner editor out of my head, it touches me anyway. especially since i actually know a person very much like shima, with a similar background and those same fears ruling his life for a long time. real people don't always react rationally (in fact i'd say rational reactions are in a small minority); they blow things out of proportion, they don't talk when they damn well should, they sabotage their own interests in futile attempts to protect themselves, they hide or don't even admit their true emotions, they push others away when they most need a connection, and more foolhardy things along the same lines. so yeah, i buy shima -- he doesn't act like i would want a sensible human being to act, but i find him completely believable. btw, i think calling him "too feminine" because he cries and angsts is quite an insult to women. call him "emo", ok? if don't you know any emo men you're not in touch with the zeitgeist.

i like tagawa a lot; he has that horrid past, but he's actually mostly conquered it, and managed to become a pretty decent guy, and i tend to prefer characters like his. he cares a lot under that easy-going exterior, and he isn't even particularly bad at showing it; it's just that shima is so closed-off he can't see it. i wanted to shake shima at that decisive point. good grief, shima, move to kyoto already! (this is one part that i totally do NOT buy; after all that heartache, what insanity is that.)

i can see why some people might take exception to the amount of melodrama, and why the story might not be for them. but i completely disagree that this is in any way a typical BL story. no, it's not the greatest thing i've ever read, but it IS considerably above average (and i've read a lot of BL; much more than i've logged here). especially the art is fabulous; it's not surface-pretty like so much BL, but it's so expressive -- it says so much that the terseness of the writing doesn't bother me, and i admire how yoneda can convey so much intricate emotion with just a few pen strokes. this mangaka will go on my watch list for that alone.

btw; i find most manga here overrated; too many people seem very quick with that 10 rating.

I'm usually not really into yaoi; I find it a little formulaic and so raunch raunch raunch. This had such a high rating, though, I decided to read it and am glad I did. When I stop and reflect on it I can't solidly put my finger on why this manga moved me so much, but I think part of the reason is how focused it is on facial expressions and body language and how the art tells the story more than the dialog.

Shima and Togawa are so cute too it makes you fall in love with them being in love :þ not to say that their "interactions" aren't super hot and steamy, but the hot scenes aren't as two-dimensional to me as many other yaoi manga I've read...I like its balance between sweet and steamy, probably cuz I like "melodramatic shoujo" haha >biggrin

I give it a 9.5 because, while I totally loved the story of Shima and Togawa, Onada's story was kinda bleh and dragged a bit.

I'll definitely be reading some more of Yoneda Kou's work!

I dont remember having any sort of amusement when I was reading this. Maybe it is a personal grudge against the art; or maybe it was just not my personal preference; but this story felt flat like other yaois out there. Too flat. I like her works in general, her way of telling stories is amazing. But not for this. it's just... the usual.

I wonder why everybody praise it that much... for me, it was on the same level as the usual yaoi-plot...

It depends. Your choice. I have said mine.

One of the best manga I have ever read. This author also wrote my favorite shounen ai manga. The story is good and relatable to the real world. The characters are well drawn and pretty hot! I love this author because her stories are extremely easy to relate to, and a LOT of manga have really stupid characters. The ending is sweet and the extra stories are as well. COMPLETELY WORTH THE READ!

I'm a yaoi fan who doesn't read anything until it's finished and it was the same case with Doushitemo Furetakunai. From beginning to end, a lot of people kept on telling me just how brilliant this series was and how great the mangaka is. Needless to say, I was looking forward to reading it by the time it was finished. However, I was disappointed. Now, I'm not totally giving Doushitemo a negative wrap. I did actually like it, but it's overrated. There were aspects of the series that lived up to my expectations and there were aspects that fell short.

The better parts of this series are the art and the tension. The art is stylish and emotive. Perhaps the strongest of Yoneda's talents, her artistic style is strong and it's by far the best facet of the story. Yoneda Kou is also rather talented at building tension between her characters, which is wonderfully represented in the series up to a certain point in the story.

The main, and most incremental point in Doushitemo's lackluster impression, is the storyline. It's unbelievably melodramatic. It's the kind of melodrama that I'd expect to see in an overachieving shoujo series. The biggest let down to the story is its characters. The uke is too feminine, emotionally, and the seme is too easy-going. The difference between the two, though at first builds a welcome hint of tension, ends up playing out two different stories. The uke is so highly emotionally strung, and the seme so willing to accept anything, that the two seem to pass each other by when they ought to be meeting in the middle.

That being said, I realize that the beauty of Yoneda Kou is her ability to create darker-feeling characters that her readers can and want to relate to. Unfortunately for me, she's missed the mark. I'm over the stage in my life where I want to cry every time I see a movie or read a book. Now, more than anything, it's frustrating to watch her characters struggle to get past unseen emotional barriers.

Doushitemo Furetakunai is good. No doubt about it. Great? Not really. I've read far better, and I hope to see her improve in the future. If she loses the shoujo-esk storylines and characters, I believe Yoneda Kou will be one of my favourites.

When I read the summary, it was really nice so I thought I give it a try. I also liked the beginning a lot...but as disappointing as it sounds, towards the middle, it just sort of dragged on. This story is too much about work that the love the two men have for eachother...well, I feel just really isn't there anymore. And yes, we all know the two have very terrible pasts but throughout the story, Shima should've made a bigger deal about how he doesn't want Togawa to throw him away like his ex did. He was thinking too much and the author didn't make him talk much so it ended up being a boring work.

This work is beautifully drawn but emotions should've been stronger, and should've been expressed louder. Towards the time when Togawa is being assigned to Kyoto, I couldn't wait until the manga finish so I just flipped throught the last couple of pages.
